Has anyone tried the zero carb pasta/rice from holland and barratt?

BIWI · 07/04/2013 21:32

Roasted cauliflower is lovely. Break into florets, drizzle generously with olive oil, then season with sea salt, black pepper and ground cumin. Roast for about 20 minutes, turning once during the cooking, till it's charred and soft.

Also lovely if you chuck in some shallots (halve them rather than slice them, as they burn easily)

beryl cauli rice is nice - 2 versions:

  1. 300g cauli, grated (I use my food processor) for 2 servings - fry in butter with salt about 5-7 mins
  2. fry in coconut oil, add soy sauce, prawns and spring onions and shredded omelette - we had this yesterday with satay chicken skewers

there's also cauli cheese which is lovely with added boiled eggs, a meal in itself

and you can google - cauli garlic bread and low carb 'potato' salad

BerylStreep · 07/04/2013 22:52

Thank you all. Will give these a try.

BlackAffronted · 08/04/2013 07:01

Still struggling, and have put on 6lb. BIWI, I need an ass whipping from your big stick!

sybilfaulty · 08/04/2013 07:26

Right, I am back on the wagon now. Back to work this morning and need some discipline to get me back to it. Clothes feel a bit tight but am sure a couple of days of being strict will put a dent in that.

Black - keep at it, honey, you can do it. Have you got tasty LC food in? Have the kids finished the chocolate?

Not a fan of cauliflower rice but love roasted cauliflower! great with a curry if it's spicy or with anything if not. Yum. Am trying to stick to a version of Ubercamp for the next few days but may have a cauli curry thereafter.

Have a great day everyone.

BIWI · 08/04/2013 08:23

BlackAffronted Have you got your meals planned for the week to come? Have you got plenty of water to hand?

Make sure you start with your BAB as you know that helps you, and just climb back on to the wagon immediately! If you have any food in the house that is too carby, and that might tempt you, then get shot of it. Don't put yourself in the face of that temptation.

sneaks in shamefacedly
I have been APPALLING the past week since Easter - sweets, chocolate, pork pie, cake, hot cross buns. And, deservedly have put on about 6lbs.
Wedding dress measuring on Saturday is NOT going to be nice :(
DP wants me to try and speak to someone about the whole bingeing thing. Has anyone ever done this?
My only good thing is that I reined it back and was brilliant all weekend, including gym session and long walk, so dropped 2.5lbs in two days.

WillieWaggledagger · 08/04/2013 10:51

heirtotheironthrone well done for hauling yourself back on the wagon, that is the hardest part

i have had over 10 years of disordered eating (cycles of bingeing, starving myself for long periods etc) and after a year or so of low carbing (so the most normal eating behaviour of my adult life) i went to my GP. i was referred to mental health services and triaged to eating disorder services and am now awaiting treatment, which will be psychoanalysis/CBT based

while low carbing has been fantastic for me in terms of improving my eating behaviours (i eat at regular times and in normal quantities) i realise that it's not a cure. it regulates the blood sugars so that the physical urges are minimised, but i felt i needed outside help with my relationship with food

if you feel you want that i would urge you to speak to your GP, mine was very supportive

AuntieMaggie · 08/04/2013 11:23

I need an ass kicking too... Blush

Went out at the weekend intending to stick to dark rum but someone put a pint of cider in front of me (my usual drink) while I was chatting and I drank it without thinking... and then had a few more which led to carby food at the end of the night and yesterday too...

Have started off well today but still kicking myself for sabotaging myself again. Argh.

prettybird · 08/04/2013 11:45

Well, having had a "mindful" weekend day off for my birthday (on Saturday), I am shocked at my weight today.

I didn't quite break 11 stone for my birthday as I'd wanted (after Easter last week which I also had "off" Blush, I'd actually put a wee bit of weight 8 on ), as I was 11 stone 2lb on Saturday.

However, today after lots of bubbly and birthday cake and chocolates I was 11 stone dead! Shock (in fact, the dodgy scales even had me below 11 stone, but as I got 11 stone three times and 10 stone 12 and 10 stone 11 once, I'm taking them as aberrations!).

Anyway, dh and I are fully back on the WOE: had a BAB of fried eggs and bacon and am going to work harder at drinking water as I'd got a bit remiss on that. Dinner tonight is pork steaks with cream and probably roasted cabbage and maybe butter braised savoy cabbage. Had breakfast late, so might not have lunch - or maybe just some greek yoghurt.

Have a ball to go to in 3 weeks time: tried my Nicole Farhi dress on and it's still a bit tight Hmm. Put it this way, I am a) currently an extremely buxom wench in it Wink and b) I'd need to wear a very thin black layer under it so that you wouldn't see my flesh where the buttons are gaping Blush (it's a "button up the front" dress). Apart from that, I look fantastically slim in it - but then it is a 12 (tries to erase from memory the fact that when I bought it, I also fitted the Size 10 but it was a wee bit neat) Grin

NigellasGuest · 08/04/2013 11:57

BIWI and friends, I really need your help.
I did so well with low carbing, but have put a stone back on since December. I fell off the wagon in the run up to Christmas and just gave up the ghost. I now feel really really bad about myself and have also been prey to the bingeing urge and the result is that none of my clothes fit me anymore, and I look like a big fat blob and just hate myself Sad

NoCarbsBeforeBarbs · 08/04/2013 12:21

Hello Low Carbers. PLEASE can someone tell me where to start. About to go shopping!

WillieWaggledagger · 08/04/2013 12:57

nice to see you again nigella. sorry to hear you're not happy, but you've done this before and you can do it again. please don't hate yourself, that is an unproductive way of thinking

BIWI · 08/04/2013 13:02

Right - Nigella - no use worrying about what's done. You can't undo it, but you can turn things round.

Christmas, early New Year and Easter are all hard times if you're trying to avoid carbs. And the shit weather we've been having has not made life any easier!

So just get back on the wagon.

List out all the lovely low carb foods and meals that you particularly enjoy, and make sure that you go and buy all the stuff that you need to make them. Get rid of everything in your house that is too carby, so that you're not tempted.

Print out the Bootcamp rules, along with the list of allowed veg and make sure that you are following them.

Next Bootcamp starts on 29 April, so you've got a couple of weeks to get yourself back on track before we start again!

And chin up - you're clearly not the only one!!! Grin Flowers

welcome nocarbsbeforebarbs. as a good, quick intro i would suggest reading this info that BIWI has put together what is the low carb diet, how the low carb diet works and low carb diet plan. it really helps to have a handle on why you would want to low carb as well as how. what are your aims for low-carbing - weight loss? general health?

if you want some quick meal plans, BIWI has also put some together in the spreadsheet here under the tab 'ubercamp menus and shopping lists' (these are quite strict meal plans and initially you might want to include some dairy such as cheese and yoghurt)

NoCarbsBeforeBarbs · 08/04/2013 13:23

Thank you Willie :-)
Very helpful!

I will have a read, do a shop and get involved!

Thank you

NigellasGuest · 08/04/2013 14:17

Thanks WillyWaggle, BIWI..
I felt quite touched reading your post - helping me to get back onto the LC wagon!

So hard - if not impossible - to de-carb the house when you live with 3 teenage DCs and a DH with Parkinsons (not sure if that's rrelevant or not but it does mean I don't like dictating to him what he eats) and if anyone has any tips on dealing with this, please please tell me. I think they will be quite nice about not scoffing Snickers bars in front of me, but removing ALL carby food from the house is impossible. Also one DC is an "elite" athlete, as in, she is very specialised in a particular activity that requires carbs. That could be partly why I gave in to temptation in the first place, although I need to take responsibility and not just blame it on people eating naughty stuff in front of me.
Off to stock up on good LC food now ...

HeirToTheIronThrone · 08/04/2013 14:30

Thank you Willie - I did pluck up the courage to speak to my GP on the phone about it a couple of months ago, who said he would get back to me and never has - which I think I took as a 'there's nothing we can do'. Shall try again, as I really need to sort it out.
I have changed to my new name on the spreadsheet, I hope that's ok.

WillieWaggledagger · 08/04/2013 14:44

do push back on that heirtotheironthrone - it's not good that he hasn't followed it up because it's such a hard thing to open up about, and well done for doing that in the first place. emphasise the impact it has on your life and mental health if you can. i know i felt that i was low priority because i am not at an extreme weight (either low or high) at the moment, but to my surprise the ED team have taken me very seriously and are sympathetic about how distressing it is to have such issues with food

EwanHoozami · 08/04/2013 15:56

Welcome back, Nige :)

Try to stop worrying about having a house full of carbs. Don't forget that once you're back in ketosis (which won't take long) you simply won't fancy any of it. Your blood sugar will be balanced enough that you won't get that horrendous mid-afternoon crash that magnetises you to the biscuit tin.

IIRC you were really good at this LC lark so maybe you just need to revise the sciencey stuff, remember your favourite LC recipes and you'll see the back of that stone in no time.

MrsHerculePoirot · 08/04/2013 15:59

Hello! I too have been terrible, I was good all over the actual Easter weekend and then have been pretty rubbish ever since. Today is a new day for DH and I. I am trying not to think about the very long term, but one day at a time. I know that I am OK for today and have a lovely steak to look forward to tonight. Tomorrow I have planned my BAB and then will go from there.

Sometimes I find the bigger picture too daunting (5 stone at least to lose) and it feels like too much of a mountain to climb. The thing is I also know is that if I can stick to it carefully, probably in less than a week's time I will feel mentally and emotionally so much better and stronger and then I find it easier to stick to again. As soon as I have lost a bit of weight again I will be more motivated.

Yama · 08/04/2013 16:12

Can I ask - has anyone's monthly cycle changed since starting this woe?

I started early January and the first couple came at the usual 31 day mark. It has now been 36 days. (My cycle was 37 days pre dc2)

Someone reassure me please. Dh has had the snip.

HeirToTheIronThrone · 08/04/2013 16:34

Yama mine is all over the place - not that unusual as have Implanon but even more add than normal since starting this WOE. I'm sure there were quite a lot of people reporting random cycles at the start? So I'm sure it's fine!

Thanks to you Willie - my excuse for some time has been that there are people with worse things than me, and like you I am not obese nor skeletal - so people will think I am fine... It helps to know you are the same and have been taken seriously!

Yama · 08/04/2013 16:43

Thanks Heir. Even though dh has had the snip, because I've not had an irregular period for years I start to get 'the fear'.
