Planning on doing Race for Life this year but very unfit!

I'd love to do the race for life this year. I've never been much of a runner -I just don't seem to be able to get my breathing in a good pattern.

I've not exercised properly for 8 years, but did have a general level of fitness from working in an active job until last summer when I moved to a much more sedentary job.

So I've started doing the 30 day shred - I've just done day 5!

My plan is to get through to day 30, then start the couch to 5k running programme.

This is not based on anything more than the fact that I am hoping that in 25 more days the evenings will be a bit milder as well as being a bit lighter.

Am I deluded, or could this be a good plan to get me ready for a 5k run in June?

You have 3 clear months so I think you can 100% do it! Best thing about race enlife is that you can run a bit then walk a bit, so see how training goes and set yourself a realistic target. Don't under estimate adrenaline in the day either! Good luck!

That's very encouraging - thanks!

you can also walk the whole thing, if necessary. No one minds. I went round with a friend last year who only ran the first 100m or so. It didn't matter. We still had a good time.

Thanks Merle. I'm the type of person who will only work hard at something if I have a goal.

Race for life is my goal until June to kick start my attempt at getting fit again, I just was keen to get opinions on whether or not the timescale was realistic.

I am training for a 10k run in may, using a couch to 10k app. Four weeks in and i can do 5k in 35mins i dont run the whole way i run them walk a min then run etc. Its very doable by june :)

10k - wow! That sounds like too much for me to aim for ATM but it's good to hear that the app is keeping you in the right track.

30 day shred should get me ready to start a bit of running I think. Sounds like my plan is do-able Smile.

Well I had never run in my life before tho I walk everywhere and used to swim a lot. I also do the odd Davina DVD but hadn't been doing them recently. Have been pleasantly surprised at how well its going, I run these/four times a week and the app is great, you can really see yourself improving.

I think its very disable following the apps, they are very easy to follow.

There are some couch to 5k threads on mnet if you do a search :)

Thanks, I'll have a look for those threads.

24 more days of the shred to do, then I'm hoping that the evenings will be feeling more spring like to help me on my way!
