Giving up sugar before my teeth fall out!

At the dentist yesterday I found out I have to have a crown which will cost about £500, plus a replacement, larger filling on the adjacent tooth. Most of my teeth are filled. This is from a lifetime of eating sweet cr*p, I'm almost 45.

Enough already...I also have about 10lbs to lose to get back to my preferred weight and I joined a gym, after about 4 years break, a few weeks ago.

Anyone else given up sugar? Any suggestions for a healthy eating plan that would support me in this? Is 5:2 suitable?
