Week 6 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp _ Where I start to wave my big stick again

BIWI · 11/02/2013 08:39

Morning all

Here it is - come and confess all

Now. Three things have come to my attention.

  1. There is a lot of baking going on. Sweet things and bread substitutes.

Please remember that we are trying to avoid sweet things and that we are trying to avoid using artificial sweeteners.

  1. A lot most of you are falling off the wagon - either 'accidentally' (Hmm) or because situations arise where you have not planned ahead or deliberately.

This is not a very forgiving WOE. Lapses/cheats like this will have a big impact - at the very least you will not see any weight loss for a while - most likely, though, you will see a gain of around 3-7lbs. You really have to plan ahead and make sure you do everything you can to stay focused and avoid the carbs. Going out for a meal or to dinner at a friends does mean that you have to think about what's going to be on offer. You cannot assume that low carb options are going to be available (although most restaurants should be fairly easy to navigate).

  1. There is a lot of moaning about seeing a weight gain or not losing.

May I refer you to 1 and 2 above?

Please, please, please go back to Bootcamp/Bootcamp Light rules. They are there for a reason!

I can tell you that almost every time someone posts "I don't know what to do, the scales aren't moving for me/I've gained half a stone and I don't know why, because I'm being really good/have been following the rules" this is a massive signal that, actually, they haven't.

Fat is key.
Water is key.
Too much alcohol will stop weight loss.
Dairy - especially cream and cheese - can be an issue for many (yoghurt is better tolerated)
Artificial sweeteners are to be avoided.
Fruit should be severely restricted.

We have only five weeks of Bootcamp left, including this week. Let's get serious and back on track.

I'm in hospital tomorrow having a cyst removed from my knee! ( I wonder how much a cyst weighs ? Another 1lb off ? ) keep it up everyone !

Firsttimepig · 16/02/2013 10:31

(Smile) (grin)

Tigglette · 16/02/2013 10:33

Well done you, its fantastic when you see it working well.

ShebaQueen · 16/02/2013 10:36

Hello all, hope everyone has had a good start to the weekend.

Have been awake for a while but had a bit of a lie in which was lovely.

Off to make some scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Bye for now.

Bessie123 · 16/02/2013 11:00

biwi can you help with meat free alternatives for your eating plan? I eat fish but not meat. I thought I might make tuna burgers instead of beef ones, they are really nice.

Also, can I just warn everyone that Delouis mayonnaise is foul? I have given up on it and just use Helmans now

pyjamalover · 16/02/2013 11:02

Snigger @ BIWI
Have a fab holiday choo

All the supportive comments about twattish inner gobblers and falling off the wagon came at v. salient time for me. I love this WOE and feel rubbish after 'cheating' so I don't know why I do it. Definitely sticking to some strict simple days similar to BIWIs suggested plan. Started today with last nights leftover seabass (panfried in lemon and herb butter) and broccoli, eaten cold dipped in mayo, DH said it was a disgusting breakfast but he is wrong it was yummy!

doing nights (again!) tonight and tomorrow but will be fine eating wise, not even going to doubt myself. please all send me vibes for non crazily busy shifts. All the junior drs just rotated jobs and I am in charge so I expect to be interrupted with questions about every 15 seconds.

have a good weekend all, jealous of blacks seaside walk.

GinotPrigio · 16/02/2013 11:03

Crawling out of my hole to say hello. Have had a nasty chest infection the last few days so been completely out of action. Taste buds have disappeared along with appetite (that never happens to me) so it was a struggle to eat. I'm down 4lbs this morn but I suspect that will come flying back on once i start eating properly Hmm

6 weeks today to our wedding so very motivated to keep going. BIWI's 3 day menu looks good. I might do it before my hen party next weekend, before the booze sets in!!

Bessie123 · 16/02/2013 11:09

M sis, who has been low carbing for years and is very thin suggests tofu and mushrooms for breakfast, with a little soy sauce.

Also, I don't know if this is helpful, but she always has a pudding when she eats out and maintains her weight successfully that way. She doesn't eat puddings unless it's a social setting and she has porridge for breakfast. But still no pasta, bread etc.

Bessie123 · 16/02/2013 11:12

Oh, I meant to say, this is only for maintaining, not for weight loss. She obviously does not lose weight while stuffing her face with chocolate fondant. I was just trying to show that if you do miss the puddings, you can have them again in moderation when you are maintaining

Yama · 16/02/2013 11:18

Righto - I've just seen your 3-day even sticker Bootcamp plan BIWI. I'm in.

However, I will make variations as I don't eat tuna (mercury) or mushrooms (gadz).

So, I will adhere to no dairy (except frying in butter), no snacking and veggie carbs to be under 3g.

The challenge will be in the planning, which is why your meal suggestions is good BIWI.

Do we start on Monday?

Yama · 16/02/2013 11:19

Ahem ... even stricter that should read.

BlackAffronted · 16/02/2013 11:49

Had an amazing sleep after all that sea air yesterday! I feel fab :)

Biwi, your menu sounds fab, but I have a few reasons as to why I cant do it with you guys. I have just bought a large veg box, so will be eating the veg that was in there. Also, as soon as I tell myself "no snacks", I then start to crave them & feel deprived. If I know I ca have them, then I probably wont have any Grin Also, I have to make meals that are for the whole family really, and so it desnt quite fit in. I am, however, going to be stricter in my own way, with what I have. Will that do?

I have a weekend away next week for my birthday. Really looking forward to it!

JustasmallGless · 16/02/2013 11:50

BIWI - how very dare you suggest I might go off piste!

I am going after lunch as the menu consisted of a box delivered to spa with noodles and all manner of carb products so I decided to skip it. Have been online but there is no menu listed so fingers crossed. As always with me I'm good on the food and rubbish on the alcohol. Am drinking plenty of water and got my trusty milk thistle with me too (thanks Toomuch)

Those who are non meat eaters there are some lovely veggie recipes on the recipe thread and I have heard good things about Rose Elliots book.

halfthesize · 16/02/2013 12:08

I am so jealousEnvy Gless enjoy your R & RWink

Im off out tonight so there will be a couple lots of wines involved, now what to wearHmm

Auntie I cook mine slowly and season with smoked paprika Smile

AuntieMaggie · 16/02/2013 12:11

Sorry to hear you're unwell Ginot. I had a chest infection a couple of weeks ago and I still haven't really got my appetite back. I find a lot of things I liked previously too rich and most bland foods are carby. Though I do have a craving for spicy things...

Currently putting together a shopping list/evening meal plan for next week which so far consists of lamb and spinach curry and a Caribbean chicken stew...

AuntieMaggie · 16/02/2013 12:12

Thanks halfthesize :)

GinotPrigio · 16/02/2013 12:31

AuntieMaggie it's so true. I would love a slice of toast or plain pasta right now. Nothing else appeals. Just has a couple of boiled eggs but couldn't taste a thing Hmm

BIWI · 16/02/2013 12:39

I will try and come up with some fish alternatives and possibly some veggie alternatives!

Biwi, your menu sounds fab, but I have a few reasons as to why I cant do it with you guys

Reasons, or excuses? Wink

I have just bought a large veg box, so will be eating the veg that was in there.

I hope that you are in control of what veg there is in there, and that you aren't including any carby veg? Is this veg on the allowed list? Can you not make sure that you eat the veg that is 3g carbs per 100g and give anything else to the rest of the family?

Also, as soon as I tell myself "no snacks", I then start to crave them & feel deprived. If I know I ca have them, then I probably wont have any

If you are low carbing properly then you won't be hungry, so these cravings are just reflecting a habit that you have to break.

If you are really hungry, then you should eat - and you could do this on the three day plan if you really must. What about some olives? Otherwise, I'm afraid that this just sounds like you're not really committed to it!

Also, I have to make meals that are for the whole family really, and so it desnt quite fit in

In what way do these meals not work for the whole family?

I am, however, going to be stricter in my own way, with what I have. Will that do?

Depends what your plan is! Grin

BIWI · 16/02/2013 12:44

Yama - one of the other things that can impact your weight loss when you're ill is any drugs that you're taking. Ibuprofen can have an impact apparently. Also, as I noticed myself yesterday after I'd taken some soluble aspirin, some drugs contain citric acid which can impede weight loss, as well as potato starch!

OP posts:
AuntieMaggie · 16/02/2013 13:32

Ginot I've also gone off eggs which doesn't leave me with a lot of options...

BIWI · 16/02/2013 13:33

Don't worry - I'll work out an egg-free option as well!

(There will be no excuses!)

Afternoon all.

Apologies for not coming back sooner my parents arrived weds night and its a mad house here.

I will list out meals daily once parents depart next week. End of week so I have a long slog ahead.

Mine are hard work, expect to be ferried to London attractions (unsuitable for children!) and meals at times to suit them but again not the DC so I am doing 6 meals a day. Argh. And step dad has early stage dementia and wanders off and I worry about him falling etc. he spent an hour in the basement this morning as he had wondered off and couldn't remember what he was doing there. Plus he can't remember when his last meal was so is asking for food every 5 mins.

I could join the super strict no dairy etc boot camp extra. It's sort of what I have been doing.

Despite visitors I am managing fine with meals. Mainly doing roasts or fish en papillotte with veg and I avoid the carby veg.

Parents arrived only hours after the decorators finished so I have had proper chaos on my hands. Grin

A small merciful break while DH has taken them to the park with DD while DS naps. Aaahhhh.

skandi1 · 16/02/2013 13:50

BIWI

My answer on how to do coffee whilst being dairy free is soya milk. Yes it's low in fat but low carb too. And it's not bad with coffee. It's yuk in tea though.

So does that pass your super strict boot camp extra plan?? Grin

Iamaslummymummy · 16/02/2013 14:35

I've been having almond breeze milk in tea and have got Kara coconut milk to try. Both very lc.
