Week 3 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Full Fat or Light?

BIWI · 20/01/2013 17:08

So we've completed the hardest part of Bootcamp. Now is the time, if you wish, to relax things a little, and to move on to Bootcamp Light.

On the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will - after weighing in, of course - find the rules for Bootcamp Light. However, as I know some people can't access the spreadsheet easily, here they are:

Bootcamp Light

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium, magnesium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado and spinach is a good source of magnesium. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:

Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Tea was a large rib eye steak (bloody as hell) with steamed broccoli and coleslaw on the side. Have had a gin and a slimline tonic, and a glass of red, 2 more pints of water and now have another decaf black coffee. Dh wonders how I don't wet the bed.

I may have completed my eating for the day. Maybe. Possibly.

TheEarlyBird · 26/01/2013 20:58

Just marking my place. Took a sneaky peak at the scales this morning and couldn't believe my eyes - hope I don't blow it with my Saturday night "drink" or several

Bessie123 · 26/01/2013 21:41

I have eaten too much today...

B - 4 cream cheese pancakes with cream and raspberries and 1 strawberry (it tasted so sweet)
L - tuna burgers with an oopsie roll, homemade coleslaw and a v few celeriac chips
D - prawns in beurre blanc, braised celery, celeriac fondant and creamed cabbage.

I might go pop.

catinboots · 26/01/2013 22:04

These meal diaries are starting to look like a cordon bleu restaurant menu!

Ladies you are an inspiration Thanks

Valdeeves · 26/01/2013 22:10

I totally agree with that Catin Boots!

Bessie - talk to me about celeriac fondant?

Bessie123 · 26/01/2013 22:36

Link to celeriac fondant recipe

yum

I added a bit of double cream to the sauce at the end.

Bessie123 · 26/01/2013 22:39

Now there's no feeling guilty about cooking with butter and cream and no relying on lazy dinners like pasta I am definitely cooking more ornate meals. Plus, I think I may be talking dp round to joining me on this woe and there would be no chance of that if I'd been making omelettes for dinner every night.

DorisIsWaiting · 26/01/2013 23:04

I struggle to keep up with this thread but just dropping in to say I cooked the celeriac chips tonight. I really really really (can't emphasise that enough) convinced I would manage to try one after cutting up the celeriac. I tossed them in som parprika from Mr Lidl and WOW just WOW, They're now on my list of favourites. Had it with a linda Maccartney meat style burger which was bordering on carby (7.9g) but I didn't have anything else in the freezer.

Tomoorrow I want to try aubergine parmigiano. And pancakes I really want to try pancakes. Had a look on pinterest this evening for more ideas but there is a huge glut of sweet stuff (sweetened with stevia) which seemed to go against the basic principle of retraining your taste buds? Not sure I want to go down the route of a chemical replacement...

I peaked at the scales yeserday and I was 1lb away from being under my first mile stone (which would be a 12lb loss!) but it's not weigh day proper until weds and I had wine last night (hideious day with dd2!). Still I'm happy clothes are fitting better.

Bessie123 · 26/01/2013 23:15

Here are a couple of low carb food blogs (there is another below, where the celeriac fondant recipe is from).

slightly smug but cute

blogger is a bit irritating

Valdeeves · 27/01/2013 06:31

Thanks Bessie!

BlackAffronted · 27/01/2013 07:52

Oh dear, I drank maybe one too many vodkas last night :( Feeling rather delicate!

I did resist the carby nibbles though. Made streaky bacon wrapped halloumi bites, and everyone loved them - they didnt last long sadly! If you are ever after a savoury snack for a party, definitely try these.

I had one apple liquer shot though, given to me after Id already had a few drinks so downed it without thinking first :( Fingers crossed theres no damage.

Iamaslummymummy · 27/01/2013 07:55

Mental note to self. do not have a big Starbucks soya latte when you are on week 4 day 6 of bootcamp. I haven't slept that badly in such a long time.

Yama · 27/01/2013 08:19

Please someone take my hangover away from me. You can tell I don't go out often because when I do I overdo it.

Strangely down 2lbs though.

Blackaffronted - I'll definitely try those bites.

Yama · 27/01/2013 08:31

Ruprekt - I'd go for the pork belly. Most definitely.

BlackAffronted · 27/01/2013 09:12

Just made the most fab pancakes, in my opinion better than the cream cheese ones, from whey protein & almond flour. Will put them in the recipe thread. Just ate 3, they were brilliant.

WillieWaggledagger · 27/01/2013 09:13

Beetroot quite carby I think ruprekt I would go for pork belly

jan2013 · 27/01/2013 09:17

my mum brought me loads of beetroot, tomatoes, peppers kiwi and veg soup during the week bless her. she does that when she thinks im not eating properly! so im eating them - she could have brought worse things i guess. she brought berries and grapes too - i guess the grapes are the worst so dd has had all of those and ive enjoyed the berries!

Iam no way - its awful when that happens, i love my coffees and when i forget to order a decaf from mid afternoon on i really do feel the effects!

BlackAffronted · 27/01/2013 09:24

I wish we could share photos on this thread, I would love to show some of my meals & see others. My pancakes looked so good Grin

Jacaqueen · 27/01/2013 09:38

Morning All

I am feeling a little delicate this morning. We had some sad news yesterday, FIL died. It was not exactly unexpected but still a shock when it came IYKWIM.
I went with DH to break the news to his mum and it was just awful. She insisted I join her in a brandy to two and of course I did.

Just came on here to catch up and I see that our illustrious leader has quoted me in bold no less. For some strange reason this has made my day and really cheered me up.

I am not going to use this sadness as an excuse to overeat and drink.
I am however going to use it as an excuse to go shopping as all of my funeral suitable clothes are too big.

catinboots · 27/01/2013 09:38

Black - I've started taking photos of my meals Blush

Shall I start a thread on the 'have you seen this' board? You can post pics, but you can only view them on a computer - not on an ipad or iPhone

catinboots · 27/01/2013 09:38

Oh Jac cross posts.

I'm so sorry. Thanks

WillieWaggledagger · 27/01/2013 09:41

Jac I'm so sorry, how terribly sad

NoelHeadbands · 27/01/2013 10:32

Jac so sorry to hear about your FIL x

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 27/01/2013 10:32

Jac, so sorry to hear that.

DH poisoned me on Friday with bloody undercooked chicken. I have spent the last 2 days running to the loo continually. I didn't fancy anything much until last night when I suddenly was so hungry (for bland food) that I sent DH out for chips. Blush I'm still pretty dehydrated but have lost 2.5 lbs despite the chips. (Silver lining!) Am back on the wagon today, or I will be when DH gets back from the supermarket.

Wait, I tell a lie. DH bought haggis on Friday but we didn't eat it then because I was ill, so it has to be eaten today. I find oats don't derail me completely, so I have FX that it will be okay. We are too poor to let food go to waste.

Livelongandprosper · 27/01/2013 10:42

So sorry Jac
