Week 3 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Full Fat or Light?

BIWI · 20/01/2013 17:08

So we've completed the hardest part of Bootcamp. Now is the time, if you wish, to relax things a little, and to move on to Bootcamp Light.

On the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will - after weighing in, of course - find the rules for Bootcamp Light. However, as I know some people can't access the spreadsheet easily, here they are:

Bootcamp Light

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium, magnesium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado and spinach is a good source of magnesium. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:

Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

ahem

and although you might not lose numbers on the scales every week, in the long run

WillieWaggledagger · 25/01/2013 12:01

yes have added

Jacaqueen · 25/01/2013 12:05

MsRinky.

You will look amazing.

I also meant to say, I feel that there has been a real shift in the past few years towards low carbing being more acceptable. Still a long way to go though. I want to be able to stand up and say, 'SEE I TOLD YOU SO', when finally the government and doctors admit that the low fat message they have been spouting out for years is wrong.

I draw strength from the fact that I believe one day this will happen and I will be on the right side. I just hope I live long enough to see it. Thanks to this diet I just might.

jan2013 · 25/01/2013 12:06

hi Biwi i just read that, and i will read some more stuff about it, no need to ask Dr Briffa, thanks mumat39 :)

PostBellumBugsy · 25/01/2013 12:13

Just to add to the general big stick waving - you really do need to give this WOE your best shot to start off with. I've been using my carb counter app & have been quite shocked how quickly the carbs creep in. I used to think I easily kept to 20/25 carbs a day when I was being hardcore, but actually it was more like 40/50.

Some people will shed weight really easily & quickly, if like me you are a bit older & have a sedentary job & a long history of keeping your weight in check - it can feel like a bit of a long, slow, slog.

However I know this WOE works & I love that I don't feel half starved all the time & I'm not thinking about food constantly - so I'm sticking with it.

BUT - don't deceive yourselves. Those glasses of wine or few squares of chocolate all add up. That's fine if you are just trying to maintain weight but it may well stop you losing.

Pork belly joints at aldi on 31st January. 3.99/kg! Smile

littlermissstan · 25/01/2013 12:25

So today: B- Total yogurt L- green salad with a big dollop of mayo, some cubed Jarlsberg and a few cherry tomatoes (tomatoes not amazing I know, but only half a dozen and they were going soft in the fridge and wasting nice fresh food gives me the rage a bit). D- will be chilli and cauli rice with sour cream.

I am so, so worried about tomorrow's afternoon tea hen do thing - I have a history of binge eating and have an enormous fear I am going to fall facefirst into a table of cake and sandwiches and undo all my good work. All the people who are saying they don't want things like this any more - I just don't feel like that! I will be fine on drinking vodka and soda interspersed with loads of water, and the next day will indulge in a fry up at the hotel we are staying in and get straight back on it, but this worry is taking the enjoyment out of celebrating with my friend tomorrow at the moment :( Any advice?

AuntieMaggie · 25/01/2013 12:33

Just checking in :)

Been living on a diet of sugar free jelly, fruit tea and berries with a couple of bowls of soup so not been following this woe. Gone right off meat and everything has tasted gross.

Anyway today is the last day I'm going to be ill so will be bootcamping again tomorrow when I've been shopping.

BIWI · 25/01/2013 12:37

littlemissstan - best advice I can give you is to make sure that you eat before you go so that you won't be hungry. If you really have to eat - take the sandwiches apart and eat the filling! (Been there, got the t-shirt!)

Welcome back, AuntieMaggie - I hope you're feeling better

NoveltySlippers · 25/01/2013 12:39

littlermisstan Sad I feel your pain.

While I wouldn't say I was technically ever a binge eater, I have always had problems with my 'off switch', if you see what I mean, if I have lots of lovely food in front of me.

So buffets (and food that is FREE eg. at a party) and I would always go mad.

There was a work hospitality buffet on last night, and I didn't go. Sad to say that the reason I didn't go was that I couldn't trust myself.

So I, too, am not yet at the stage where I think I have absolutely no desire for these foods. I don't if they're not in front of me - but still a bit of a struggle if they are.

It's only been three weeks though so I'm hoping that the longer I do this, the more of a woe it will become. Dont they say it takes 21 days to form a new habit?

MrsHerculePoirot · 25/01/2013 13:18

AuntieMaggie - you actually made me giggle with "Anyway today is the last day I am going to be ill" in my head you said it really firmly with a "so ner ner ner ner ner" at the end at your illness!!!!

Littlermisstan I also feel your pain. I agree eat before you go, but perhaps know that you can have one cake or something, sometimes by telling myself that I can have something the desire for it almost disappears by the time I get round to having it. If the worst case happens, whatever you do don't let a bad afternoon turn into a bad weekend, or turn into a bad week. Stick to your plan, straight back on it with a big fry up (low carb style) and tonnes of water and just focus on the days ahead. Be prepared for some cravings to start up, but stay strong and move forward.

Novelty well done for not going last night. I think I'm a bit like that, just avoid doing something that I know might make me stray.

Well, I managed to swim for half an hour today whilst DD had her swimming lesson - now she is three I don't have to go in with her so decided to make use of the time!

MrsHerculePoirot · 25/01/2013 13:19

Recipes - also I wanted to say that if you cook from the recipes on the recipe section, it would be great if you had a minute to rate them/comment on them later. I was thinking that if all the low carb ones had high ratings we might convert some more people!!!

BlackAffronted · 25/01/2013 13:20

MrsRinky, well done, that dress looks amazing and have a fabulous time at your party!

Right, my Burns Supper plan is to have 100g haggis (18 carbs) and lots of mashed neeps & butter. No pudding. Will I get away with this?

Breakfast was oeufs en cocotte (baked eggs & cream)
Lunch was prawn mayo lettuce wraps & a babybel

Will I come out of ketosis do you think?

BIWI · 25/01/2013 13:20

Good idea, MrsHP.

Littlermissstan - ultimately, and I know this is hard (!) it's only you who can control this.

littlermissstan · 25/01/2013 13:30

Thanks all - I know it's only me, and relates so much to my dreadful decades-old relationship with food rather than this WOE especially. I will do my best! And have my phone close by so I can sneak on and moan about the other sugary twats hens :)

herecomesthsun · 25/01/2013 13:37

There are nice savoury ish foods though that would go well with a posh tea eg
-smoked salmon
-scrambled egg with smoked salmon

  • large prawns and mayonnaise
  • asparagus and butter
-cheeses and celery

Posh teas often have sandwiches or savories alongside the cakes and scones, I don't see why someone couldn't order their own choice of savory. It might be possible to speak to the restaurant in advance and ask,. A glass of dry champagne to toast the bride should be doable I'd have thought?

AuntieMaggie · 25/01/2013 13:37

MrsHerculePoirot :o I was actually mentally stamping my foot at being ill - am determined to be better tomorrow as a week is long enough. Plus I have loads to do!

mumat39 · 25/01/2013 13:38

Littlemissstan, I could have written your post apart from the fact that I'm not going to a hen do. But although I have in the past tended to eat and eat and eat and obsess constantly about biscuits and chocolate, that has changed. I now occasionally think about them, but never feel the need to go eat some. I even made biscuits the other day with chic chips for my dc. I'd have eaten them all by now, just like eating a packet of crisps, but I haven't been tempted even though they are there and I could. So, I'm not not thinking about stuff like that, I'm just not obsessing if that makes sense. Even if you're thinking about stuff less, then that's the main thing.

Also, the main thing is go and have fun and enjoy yourself and don't make it about the food. Have some of what you fancy if you really really want to, and enjoy it and don't beat yourself up about it.

Could ou call ahead and ask what sort of food there will be, te may be olives, pancetta, meats, salads stuff, and all sorts of other good stuff that you could eat. It hopefully won't all be sandwiches and cake.

It's wierd and I've just noticed that as I wrote olives my mouth was watering, but had no emotional response to typing cakes and biscuits. I sometimes feel like I've been abducted by aliens and someone else has partially replaced me. It's actually really wierd!

Anyway, whatever happens, have fun and enjoy yourself. :)

prettybird · 25/01/2013 13:43

Just been out to get my provisions for tonight's Burns Supper.

The meal itself shouldn't be tooooo bad (although the M&S Limited Edition special haggis looks scarily high in carbs - and the black pudding slices that I got out the freezer to go with the very expensive scallops and crispy streaky bacon looks like it is quite cheap in that there is more wheat flour than blood in it) but what I'm going to have to watch is the wine......

Dh and his Master of Wine study buddy have got 3 good wines for the meal plus a sweety. My resolve is going to be stretched to the limit to have just a small glass of each.

Am now going to go and toast the sugar and oats for the clotted cream cranachan :)

I am going to make sure to eat tonight's meal mindfully , savour every mouthful and then I'll be back on full Boot Camp tomorrow. :)

mumat39 · 25/01/2013 13:47

Auntmaggie, sorry that you've been feeling poorly. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

littlermissstan · 25/01/2013 14:00

Thank you mumat - my food obsession has been going on so long so it's good to know I'm not a total freak and that someone else feels the same! Olives and cold meats are a good idea - it's in a pub rather than fancy hotel so I reckon they'll be less narked if I take some snacks with me and add them to the buffet table!

Ilovemyteddy · 25/01/2013 14:18

MsRinky well done on your fabulous weightloss, and that dress is GORGEOUS! I bet you'll look and feel fantastic in it, knowing how much effort and determination you have put in to changing your WOE.

littlemissstan I echo the others suggestions about phoning ahead to see what food there is on offer, and asking them if they can come up with a LC alternative for you. I did this at a training course I went on a few months ago and had the most amaze balls salad with cold meats and cheese whilst the rest of the delegates had boring sardines Grin. If push comes to shove you'll just have to eat the insides of the sandwiches (which is what I always do.). Like Mumat39 says, don't make it about the food - just have fun with all the
sugary twats hens!

As someone who has been eating this way for just over a year now I have to agree with the others who say that you just need to stick with it because it DOES work, but like every other 'diet' it won't work if you cheat. End of.

Ilovemyteddy · 25/01/2013 14:23

The rest of the delegates did NOT have "boring sardines" they had boring sarnies. Bloody iPad!

Oh BIWI I haven't got a question for Dr Briffa but would you please give him a hug from me because he has literally changed my life. Wish I could be there to tell him that. Thanks

halfthesize · 25/01/2013 14:29

MsRinky that dress is stunning, you will look amazing, please post some pics for us and well done on the weight loss[bgrin]

Get well soon AuntmaggieThanks

I need to go and eat something, as all I have had today is 2 coffees with cream.

mumat39 · 25/01/2013 14:38

Littlemissstan, I'll be 45 later this year, and I've obsessed about food for as long as I remember. I have a 5 and 3 year old and I want to be around to see them grow up, so I'm hoping this will help me with that. I also want to be able to wear summer clothes without feeling worried about my fat legs or csection pouch or all of the other things that I have worried about for the last few decades. I have hidden away, wearing jeans on hot days, feeling ridiculous, and I just want to be free from all that negativity. Mainly it's for my dc, but the way I feel as the weather warms up is a pretty big part for me too.

A bit vain but I can't face another summer feeling rubbish about myself. Fingers crossed I'll be able to stick with it.
