Week 3 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Full Fat or Light?

BIWI · 20/01/2013 17:08

So we've completed the hardest part of Bootcamp. Now is the time, if you wish, to relax things a little, and to move on to Bootcamp Light.

On the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness you will - after weighing in, of course - find the rules for Bootcamp Light. However, as I know some people can't access the spreadsheet easily, here they are:

Bootcamp Light

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium, magnesium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado and spinach is a good source of magnesium. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:

Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

A bit eggy today:

B: 2 boiled eggs
S: couple of slices of wafer thin ham
L: mixed leaf salad with oily dressing and a couple of teaspoons of pâté on cucumber
S: 2 brazil nuts
D: will be ham & leek frittata (cooked in a generous amount of butter and with plenty of Parmesan added). May treat myself to some Lidl 10% Greek yoghurt for "dessert".

reminds self to go and drink some more water

slatternlymother · 24/01/2013 19:05

thatgirlsevil I have found Parmesan crisps have been a real helper for me, especially when I'm feeling 'picky' in the evenings. You get the salty hit and crunch you're craving after a few, and what could've better than having them fresh and warm out of your own oven?

Yum.

Hello all,
Just popping in to confess that I have fallen off the wagon today.
I have had a very, very busy and quite stressful week - it was last day in my current job today before I start a new one on Monday. Tough leaving as Ive been there 9.5 years (eek!) and will really miss all the lovely people there. There were cupcakes and I didnt resist.
And its my birthday and we are having chinese as I am too tired to cook/go out. No wine today though .... so far!
No excuses. Tomorrow will be better. Promise.
Hope everyone else is doing better at me to sticking to it!

Rollergirl1 · 24/01/2013 19:18

thatgirl: I think your period most certainly has a lot to do with it. I have been losing a pound each day since Monday. I have been really good and strict but yesterday I had an overwhelming urge for something sweet and really had to stop myself from having some leftover Haribo that the kids had discarded. I also weigh daily and this morning I was 1lb up from yesterday. I was gutted as if I'd have lost another lb like I have every day it would have taken me below 9 stone.

Anyway, I have carried on trying to be good today. But DD had two friends over for a playdate after school and they had a chocolate cupcake and icecream for pudding. I practically scarfed DD and DS's remains before they'd even left the table!

Now in the last hour I have a really gripey, bloated tummy and when I checked my dates I think i'm pre-menstrual. Which will account for the gain in weight and my sweet cravings.

BlackAffronted · 24/01/2013 19:19

thatgirl - you sound like me :( I lost 12lb forst week, PUT on 4lb next week and seem to be staying the same now. It is disheartening, but I am staying strong and hoping some miracle happens. TBH though, Im not expecting much as I have never lost more than a stone before in my whole life, and I need to lose several!

Lavenderhoney · 24/01/2013 19:27

Biwi- the snack was when I got back from docs and too late for b but too near l!
After my decent lunch I just don't get hungry. I think I'll try to make sure I continue to eat with the dc, as long as I have something. Thanks !

littlermissstan · 24/01/2013 19:38

I have just completed the Herculean task of making cupcakes for a thing on Saturday, did not lick the bowl and forced DP to eat the spare one instantly. I did sneak 1 and a half dates though, is that really dreadful? Chicken wrapped in streaky bacon and roast celeriac is in the oven so will be having dinner ASAP to quell the cake longing!

BlackAffronted and thatgirlisevil - keep on keeping on. That's the only way that this WOE will work for you. Whatever you do, don't cheat, or think 'sod it' - that is a surefire way to guarantee that the weight will go back on!

Today:

B: 1 egg hardboiled with pepper Boursin
L: crevettes (reduced from Waitrose) with mayonnaise and a whole bag of rocket salad
Snack: cucumber and duck pate
Supper: IDP chicken thighs and broccoli, few runner beans and carrots.

Mind you, the IDP recipe involves a can of tomatoes, a small onion and a red pepper, so some carbs in there.

I might therefore forgo the berries and cream that also lurk in the fridge and just have a decaf coffee and almond milk.

Does anyone understand how Delouis mayonnaise can be 0% carbs when it has eggs in and there are carbs in eggs?

Am about to watch the Comic Relief Bake Off. I find this great fun but possibly an unwise move when low carbing.

catinboots · 24/01/2013 19:58

Black - I'm having the same period as you! I rarely have periods and a few days ago I started spotted brown stuff, today I woke up to heavy red (TMI sorry). Weird huh?

Need to start posting my food! Partly so I can remember some of my creations as I'm making some lush dishes and I'll forget them!

Yesterday

B: omelette
L: 2 pepperamis and 2 babybels
D: chicken strips cooked in butter and one tsp pesto served with watercress

Today:
B: no carb crepes with a squeeze of lemon
L: chicken strips and mushrooms cooked in butter and cream served with shredded Savoy cabbage
D: Parmesan crisps dipped in 1 tbsp sour cream

Has anyone noticed how moist and lovely meat is cooked in butter? The other night I did pork steaks cooked in butter, garlic, ginger and chilli. The pork was juicy and moist. I normally fid pork steaks really dry.....

WillieWaggledagger · 24/01/2013 19:58

Herecomesthesun I watch it too but biwi scared the bejesus out of me because apparently you can get an insulin reaction from lookin at carby things!!

Doshusallie · 24/01/2013 20:02

Happy birthday teenytaffy Thanks

Doshusallie · 24/01/2013 20:08

Starfish your observation re cake is familiar. On previous threads many of us have come to the conclusion individually on this woe of eating that you just don't eat cake on it, so when there is cake about, because we don't eat cake, you just don't eat the cake! Iykwim. there are no if buts or maybes and it makes life sooooooo much more straightforward.

I also bake a lot and have made many amazing puddings and cakes in the last year without sampling a single bite. With no issues whatsoever ( apart from pressure from others and accusations of being a 'feeder')

MsRinky · 24/01/2013 20:10

Many happy returns teenytaffy !

Catinboots, Ive only had 3 periods in the last 11 years, so I am finding this really hard! Weird howlow carbing can bring on such hormonal changes, and start your periods again. Not sure I like that part! Grin

Cant remember if I posted my menu today, but here it is

B- eggs, bacon, mushroom, mayo
L - Crayfish tails in marie rose sauce (homemade, huge dollop of mayo, half a teaspoon tom ketchup) & baby leaf salad
D - Roast chicken (loads of crispy skin, yum) and braised creamy sprouts
s - 4 pecans, ham slices

Doshusallie · 24/01/2013 20:19

I really enjoy baking. Have never had a sweet tooth so it doesn't feel like deprivation to me thankfully. And have 2 boys so there is no shortage of scarfers Grin

skandi1 · 24/01/2013 20:22

Well made it out of several days of migraine hell with whining DCs. Phew.

Feel better if a little tired still today. I have managed to stick to low carb no problem. Had THE test this afternoon. A Costco shop which meant walking past their enormous cake and patisserie section. And I did!! I did not cave into sugary twattiness. Nope not at all. Despite DD wailing for sugary butter cream topped cupcakes and carrot cake.

I admit it was hard in as much as I really wanted to ditch my willpower at the door and just go for the cake. But no. I think as my body doesn't crave sugary shite, my willpower no longer has to do any heavy lifting.

No breakfast today. Felt groggy after migraine meds.
L: leeks and mushroom fried in butter and two slices of naice ham.
D: two beef burgers topped with mozzarella and avocado and tomato salad.

3.5l of water.

Glad to see everyone is doing so well too!
Smile

Doshusallie · 24/01/2013 20:33

Urgent. Need courgette baguette instructions!!!!!

Doshusallie · 24/01/2013 20:44

Stand down troops. Found recipe and then discovered dh had used all the courgettes!!!!

So...am having 2 smoked mackerel, with 2 large flat mushrooms topped with melted cheese and a fried egg each. I KNOW!!!!! Grin

littlermissstan · 24/01/2013 21:03

I WISH I didn't want to eat the cakes! Tomorrow's challenge will be resisting licking my fingers when topping them off with salted caramel buttercream... My friend's hen do on Saturday involves a bake off... I really want to win but not eat anything!!

Iamaslummymummy · 24/01/2013 21:04

First veg box delivered tonight. I got cauliflower, savoy cabbage, stem of Brussels, Swedes, beetroot, onions and Kale. Very pleased add its all local kentish produce too. I've just had Kale done in the oven with olive oil and salt as a snack. I love the fact that you only have to go round the outside of the supermarket. I have no need for all the stuff in the middle aisles!

halfthesize · 24/01/2013 21:13

Happy birthday teenytaffy

Glad to hear you are feeling better skandi

Tea tonight was cream cheese pancakes, bacon, eggs and mushrooms, was lovelySmile

catinboots · 24/01/2013 21:30

Oh lamasmummy! I forgot to say - I've ordered a 3 wk trial of the kent veg box thanks to you!
