Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

Is he really constipated, Ruprekt, or is he just not going? There is a big difference! If he's having trouble going and/or if it's painful when he does go, then follow Willie's instructions.

Kracken - my dress size depends which shop I'm in! I was moaning about Monsoon sizing only the other day.

However, mostly I am a size 10. Tops may need to be slightly larger than bottoms, so occasionally I have to buy a size 12 top and occasionally - my most recent M&S purchase - size 8 jeans! Bra size when I started was 36C (and bursting over the top/sides!). I'm now wearing 34D and my sportsbra has gone down to 32D.

TMI Alert Blush: before Boot Camp, I was a once-a-day, first thing in the morning (or at least within the first half hour) girl. Now it can be 4 or 5 days before I "need" to go. At the moment, that's then followed by a couple of days of "smaller" movement, before another gap of c.4 days. I never feel constipated though - I just wait until "the movement is upon me" WinkBlush

I am however peeing for Scotland! Grin including waking up at least once during the night to go to the loo Hmm

BIWI · 23/01/2013 10:38

That's just your age, prettybird

prettybird · 23/01/2013 10:56

I'd say, "Piss Off You!!" (something I used to say with affection to dh a lot) - except given the conversation, it might be misinterpreted! Grin

WillieWaggledagger · 23/01/2013 10:59
Grin

i have to go to the loo at least once in the night too

i have to go past the top of the stairs and i'm always terrified i'll fall down in my staggering half-asleep state so i sort of cling to the wall all the way!

nappyaddict · 23/01/2013 15:19

BIWI Can you remind of the carb amounts for normal onions, spanish onions and shallots please?

Also for salad tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, plum tomatoes (is there a difference)

TIA :)

BIWI · 23/01/2013 15:36

Shallots are 3.3g carbs per 100g

I don't know the difference (carb-wise) between 'normal' or Spanish onions! The carb count for onion, generically, is 7.9g carbs per 100g.

I found this, about tomatoes:

1 tomato, 3 inches in diameter (6.5 oz): 5 grams effective (net) carbohydrate plus 2 grams fiber and 33 calories
1 medium cherry tomato (about ½ ounce): ½ gram effective (net) carbohydrate and 3 calories
1 medium plum tomato (about 2 oz): 2 grams effective (net) carbohydrate plus 1 gram fiber and 11 calories

That was taken from an American site, so I have put in bold the carb counts that would be relevant to us

hi, can anyone tell me what the deal is with coconut and coconut flour? I have seen both referenced in LC diets elsewhere, but I'm not sure how they would (or wouldn't) fit into this one?

BIWI · 24/01/2013 12:27

Coconut oil is what, apparently, we should be using for high temperature cooking, as it isn't 'damaged' by the heat in the way that other oils are.

Coconut flour I'm less sure of, although it is lower in carbs than ordinary flour. I have some in my cupboard, which is 21.7g carbs per 100g, compared with plain flour which is 77.7g per 100g.

I bought some initially to make biscuits with, but I haven't done anything about it, as that would involve artificial sweeteners, which I don't want to use.

I'm not sure if it can be used for making white sauces, but I'll see what I can find out ...

bulletwithbutterflywings · 24/01/2013 15:28

Thanks biwi, I'm already using coconut oil for frying, the reason I want to know about the flour is that I fancy making some cheese straws! Made some for DS using normal flour and ate really fancied one. Fresh coconut seems to be low carb, could be a nice snack?

BIWI · 24/01/2013 16:08

This is an interesting site with coconut flour recipes although most of them seem to be for sweet things

BIWI · 24/01/2013 16:10

Raw/fresh coconut is 6g carbs per 100g

BIWI · 24/01/2013 16:15

This site is interesting This is the brand of coconut flour that I bought - I think from Holland and Barrett. Some recipes there for cheese biscuits/crackers that sound interesting too.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 24/01/2013 18:01

I think I'll get some when I move on to bootcamp light!

mumat39 · 25/01/2013 11:42

Hi BIWI
I'm trying to find out about ketosis and came across this from MDA. Just wondering what you think of his take on things?

keotsis

Thanks again.

Ilisten2theradio · 25/01/2013 17:05

Can I have a glass of port? DH is desperate to open the bottle we didn't open at Christmas?

colette · 25/01/2013 17:11

ok no excuse but [bblush]
just found out didn't get the job I had an interview for two days ago,I already work for this company
I have eaten 4 squares of milk and caramel filled chocolate . Will this knock me out of ketosis ?
Am having kippers and cauliflour/ broccoli for tea ...

BIWI · 25/01/2013 17:34

colette - sorry to hear that [bsad]

It could well knock you out of ketosis - milk chocolate and caramel are really sugary so the carbs could be pretty high.

Just drink plenty of water and be superstrict for the next few days.

mumat39 - will have a look at that now ...

colette · 25/01/2013 18:49

thanks
kippers are on - loads of water, back on track.

mumat39 · 25/01/2013 20:05

I bought a 600ml tub of double cream instead of the small one when I did my online shop. I've just used some in the creamed cabbage.

What else could I do with it?

Thanks in advance.

BlackAffronted · 25/01/2013 20:24

mumat39, use it in soups, or scrambled eggs (though I think those are banned at yours because of your DC allergies?) or make "zoodles" which is ribbons of courgette fried in butter & garlic, then pour on cream & add grated parmesan. They are yummy!

mumat39 · 25/01/2013 21:23

Thanks Blackaffronted. :)

You're right about eggs, but zoodles sound lovely!

I don't know how to make soup, so thanks for the tip, I'll have a look at the recipe thread.

Thanks again.

ScaredySquirrel · 26/01/2013 13:15

I have a question:

Does coffee count towards the fluids total?

And what can I do to stop constipation (apart from drink more water...).

And I think eggs slow down my weight loss - is that common do you know?

(sorry 3 questions all in one, but I think are connected to the same issue/situation Blush).

WillieWaggledagger · 26/01/2013 14:27

scaredysquirrel

coffee doesn't count really, though i suppose you could count decaf black coffee

are you actually constipated (need to go but can't / it's painful to go) or do you just feel you should be going more regularly but don't feel the need at the moment? if you are eating plenty of low carb veg, plenty of fat and plenty of water you should be ok. remember you are probably weeing more so will be expelling waste but that means

for actual constipation, others have used psyllium husk supplement, and i was taking a magnesium supplement but had to reduce the dose because it was making me go twice a day. caffeine and exercise can help, too, some have reported

i would be surprised if eggs slowed down your weight loss, i don't think it's that common in any case, but if you feel that they don't agree with you by all means cut down on the quantity

WillieWaggledagger · 26/01/2013 14:28

n.b. i wasn't taking a magnesium supplement for constipation, just for general health, but i did find that as a side-effect i pooed more!
