Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:14

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

Peanuts are one of the highest in carbs

Macademia nuts are one of the lowest

Ruprekt · 21/01/2013 16:50

The 50g I weighed out for DH last night was quite a big portion and 3.6g carbs.

Not bad.

Also bought hazelnuts and macademias in Aldi today.

Thanks for info.

BIWI · 21/01/2013 17:09

Macadamias and almonds would be better.

KP salted peanuts are 9.9g carbs per 100g. Sainsbury's roasted, salted macadamias are 5.1g carbs per 100g and roasted, salted almonds are 7.9g carbs per 100g

bulletwithbutterflywings · 21/01/2013 17:58

Pistachios are the lowest carb aren't they?

pregnantpause · 21/01/2013 18:58

I'm not on the official bootxamp thread but have started following today. (the rules of bootcamp that is, I'm not a stalker) and how much fat is too much? today I have had around 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs. Is it too much fat? most of it comes from butter and cheese which is amazing as I don't feel like I've dieted at all today, but that's got to be wrong. How much should I eat percentage wise of my daily consumption? Tia Smile

BlackAffronted · 21/01/2013 19:45

There is no "too much fat" :)

BlackAffronted · 21/01/2013 19:51

A question about vitamin D you lot were talking about earlier ... is there a difference between vit d and vit d3? I have accidently ordered D3 from ebay, and now I am thinking I have bought the wrong ones!

BIWI · 21/01/2013 21:09

Vit D3 is the one you want.

BIWI · 21/01/2013 21:09

pregnantpause - welcome!

What have you been eating that has given you that breakdown?

Kracken · 21/01/2013 21:45

Hello! I weighed today and have gained 1lb so am back to square one as only lost 1lb in the first week of bootcamp. I will re-weigh tomorrow morning for the spreadsheet in the hope that I lose overnight!! I am staying determined however, and plan to continue with bootcamp for two more weeks before hopefully going on to bootcamp light if I've lost something. I've devised the following strategy having read through lots of the posts on this and the main threads and it would be brilliant if you kind low-carbers could let me know what you think:

  1. As dairy might be hampering my weight loss I will limit it to a dash of double cream in two coffees a day, one small portion of hard cheese every other day and three tablespoons full fat Greek yoghurt every other day.
  2. I will up my water to 4litres a day from 3 (I'm 158lbs at the mo so I think that amount if water is right?)
  3. I will eat more fat BUT I am struggling with eating fatty meat and chicken skin. It makes me feel very sick and I have actually been sick a couple of times (sorry, TMI!!). As I'm limiting dairy I will focus on extra mayo, olive oil and avocados. My question is, how much of these should I eat if I'm not managing much fatty meat? Is one tablespoon of butter, mayo or olive oil enough for a meal? Is one avocado enough?
  4. I will get in some psyllium husks as I am only pooing (yet again, TMI!) every 2-3 days and not much at that.

For more info, for the last two weeks a typical day's meals have been:
B: three tablespoons full fat Greek yoghurt OR two scrambled eggs with butter, three rashers streaky bacon fried in butter, mushrooms fried in butter. Two coffees with double cream
L: lettuce, celery, cucumber and egg, prawn or tuna mayo OR a three egg omelette with mushrooms, peppers, cheddar and lettuce on the side.
D: roast chicken with peppers, aubergine and asparagus roasted in olive oil OR prawns with peppers, mushrooms and spring onions stir fried in olive oil then simmered in coconut milk OR two low carb sausages with butternut squash and carrot mash.
S: matchbox sized piece of hard cheese, teaspoon of peanut butter (prob both of these twice a day)

Sorry this is long, I really appreciate the help! On the plus side by the way, I feel great (lots of energy, good mood and never hungry), my skin is clearer and my tummy is flatter despite the scales not moving in the right direction!!

Bessie123 · 21/01/2013 21:52

Hi, I have a question, please...

I have been really craving dairy all day. I have just had a big bowl of double cream whipped with vanilla and cinnamon. There is NO way on earth I would have eaten that 2 weeks ago - I'm not even that keen on cream usually. And I have eaten quite a lot of cheese.

So (sorry for rambling) my question is why am I craving so much dairy? I thought this WOE was supposed to eliminate cravings? Is it the lactose sugars?

BIWI · 21/01/2013 22:32

It could be, Bessie. The craving for something sweet. I wouldn't give into it again - apart from anything, if you're also eating a lot of cheese, that's a lot of dairy.

Kracken - your meals look fine to me, and I think the changes you're talking about make absolute sense. I might, though, try and cut out the dairy altogether for a few days, to see if that does make any difference.

How tall are you? It could also be that you haven't got that much weight to lose.

It's good, though, that you're enjoying other benefits of this WOE. Just need to get things tweaked till it's working for you in terms of weight loss.

pregnantpause · 22/01/2013 04:21

well today (yesterday actually looking at the time, baby keeping me upWink ) I had

prawns in garlic butter

mozzarella and basil salad

salmon on leeks, mushrooms, garlic with a dash of cream and mustard.

All very nice, and 19gs carbs for the day(I know I shouldn't be counting, but it does motivate me)

MrsHerculePoirot · 22/01/2013 06:46

Kracken - I think peppers are higher in carbs than some other veg, depends on whih colour ones you are having. It looks like you are having them quite a lot so maybe swap those for other green veg like broccoli or green beans. Also butternut squash and carrots are v carby on the veg front so again swap those out perhaps? Broccoli, cauliflower, green beans all good to have instead...

pregnantpause · 22/01/2013 07:29

oh and a coffee with double cream- how decadent a drink is that?.it was like a dessert! delicious!

happygolucky0 · 22/01/2013 11:23

hello sorry if this sounds abit thick, but I can not see where to put in this weeks weight on the spread sheet. Please could someone point me in the right direction?

WillieWaggledagger · 22/01/2013 12:46

column K happy - don't worry if there's already a weight listed in there, just overwrite it

happygolucky0 · 22/01/2013 13:58

thank you Willie !!

Kracken · 22/01/2013 13:59

Thanks so much for the advice BIWI and Hercule. At my re-weigh this morning I was actually down by two pounds from last week! Very pleased. That's on the spreadsheet now.

BIWI: yes, I am going to totally eliminate dairy this week as you suggest. Coffee with no cream was a bit tough this morning, it might take me a while to get used to black coffee! Unfortunately I am a total shortie at 5'2" so at my current weight my BMI is 29 ish - nearly obese! My ideal weight for my build (I'm quite solid with muscly limbs and big boobs - peasant stock!) is 9st 7lb so that's my target, which would put me in the healthy BMI category.

Hercule - I am going to re-visit the veg list and focus on the lower-carb options, thank you.

BIWI · 22/01/2013 16:21

Kracken - you are the same height as me. I started this WOE a year ago, weighing 11 stone 5.5lbs, and currently weigh 9 stone 7.

It's taken me a year, but I have had a very 'relaxed' year, IYSWIM! That has included two weekends away with DH (Rome and Lille), a business trip for 4 days to Athens and a fortnight's holiday. I have eaten what I wanted on those occasions. (Oh, and at Christmas as well). I have also continue to drink alcohol at the weekend - and occasionally during the week if I've been out.

The point of telling you this is not to lure you away from Bootcamp (as if!), but to tell you that the year for me has not been about deprivation in any way at all.

Yes, if I had been stricter I would have lost the weight more quickly. But, you know, we all have to have a life as well.

Kracken · 22/01/2013 22:02

Wow BIWI, we are weight/height twins!! Well, maybe that's a bit tenuous but I was 11st 5lbs when I weighed myself on 27 Dec 2012 and decided to do something. I would really love to be 9st 7lbs, can I be really cheeky and ask you what dress size you are?

I don't mind if it takes me a year to be honest. I think losing weight slowly and allowing treats is a realistic way of doing it and means you can 'train' yourself to the new WOE.

Thanks so much for your help, this is a brilliant group and you and the other posters/spreadsheet maintainers/recipe posters are awesome!

Ruprekt · 22/01/2013 22:04

EMERGENCY QUESTION!!!!!

ALERT ! ! ! ! ! ! !

DH IS CONSTIPATED, No Poo for 3 days and he is a twice a day man.

He is not impressed. What to do?????

PMSL> Grin

WillieWaggledagger · 22/01/2013 22:08

Twice a day seems unnecessary!

Is he actually constipated (needs to go but can't) or does he just feel he should be going?

Is he drinking plenty of water, eating plenty of fat and plenty of low carb veg? Remember that increased seeing means that waste is leaving via that means!

If the worst comes to the worst some have found psyllium husks work. Personally I had to reduce the dose of magnesium supplement I was taking as I started going twice a day!

Ruprekt · 22/01/2013 22:11

He just thinks he should be going and he isnt.

Increased weeing means the waste is leaving via that means has soothed him somewhat, so thanks for that.

WillieWaggledagger · 22/01/2013 22:12

Ah yes I meant weeing, ya knew what I was saying!
