Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

BIWI - what are the carbs in beetroot? I know they aren't brilliant, but I got loads in my veg box today, and am deciding what to do with them!

Bessie123 · 10/01/2013 22:04

Can I have the artichoke next week?

Lifeisontheup · 10/01/2013 22:08

I had turnip dauphinoise tonight, it was delicious. Couldn't quite finish my portion though, my appetite has really decreased over the last few days.

hopefulgum · 10/01/2013 22:29

I have a guide to dense carbs from a Paleo book, and it says that "beets" (which I expect are "beetroot") have 10gs per 100gs, and 17g per cup (sliced), but have 2gs per 100gs of fibre. That seems very high. I also have a bunch in my fridge that need to be eaten. On my list it has similar amounts of carbs to carrots, onions and butternut squash (pumpkin).

Do these foods have to be limited?

mumat39 · 10/01/2013 22:35

Hello all.

Does anyone know how this diet might affect blood pressure?

I have this odd toothache that seems to flare up when I am sitting or lying down.

It started suddenly, 2 nights ago, day 3 of this plan. That same night when I went to bed, I could really hear my pulse in my head, and it felt like I had high blood pressure.

I saw the dentist today and he took X-rays and he couldn't see what might be causing it. He said the nerve is close to the bottom of the tooth and that it must be throbbing harder than usual which is causing the nerve to hit the tooth and cause the pain.

Does anyone know if what he says makes sense? Could it be blood pressure related?

Sorry if this is a daft question, I was just surprised he didn't find anything that could be causing it.

Many thanks in advance.

MrsHerculePoirot · 10/01/2013 22:40

hopefulgum. Thank you, the other veg you list should be eaten in moderation and mindfully of the fact they are much carbier, so that sounds sensible for beet roots. Think I am going to make one or two into crisps for a treat and the others into a soup. I can thin it out and add cream to dilute the carbs a bit across portions. It is what I do,with squashes

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 22:41

Beetroot = 7.3g carbs per 100g, so not brilliant. You can have it - but just be careful how much you have and make sure that the rest of the veg/salad you have that day is the lowest carb veg/salad you can have

mumat39, this WOE should bring your blood pressure down. Don't know how that would affect your toothache. How about sinusitis?

mumat I am 38 and have been on meds for high bp since I was 30. At my last two reviews, my bp measured in the 'normal' range.

This has NEVER happened previously, it has always been high (despite the meds), even when I've not been carrying any extra weight. It could coincidence, it could be related to something else entirely, but the main change in my lifestyle ths last year has been adopting this WOE.

Do get checked out at your GP's won't you

MrsHerculePoirot · 10/01/2013 22:44

mumat39 everything I have ever rread says low carb lowers blood pressure. DH has high blood pressure and this Woe helps him. I am also not at all convinced that high blood pressure can cause what you describe, it sounds very odd, but I am in no way medically trained! You can go to a pharmacist or GP and get your blood pressure checked if you were worried?

Ilovemyteddy · 10/01/2013 22:49

I've had high blood pressure since I was 22 (am now 53). I had a health check in April after 4 months of LC and it was lower, another check in Sept when it was almost normal and one in Nov which was normal. I have had fainting issues as it's been normalising but no tooth pain.

mumat39 · 10/01/2013 22:53

Thanks everyone. It's good to know that this should help lower blood pressure.

My bp has always been fine even through both my pregnancies

I guess the dentist said it and I thought ooh, I have been eating more salty foods than normal, so thought I'd ask.

Thank you all for reassuring me.

I am trying to drink more water but the last couple of days I've forgotten to keep count. Can I ask, what sorts of problems would too many ketones cause?

Thanks again. Thanks

mumat39 · 10/01/2013 22:57

Teddy, wow that's brilliant. Does that mean you can come off the medication?

On my post, I was more asking as I really feel my blood pumping around my system, and it was a bit wierd. It's a relief that it can't be blood pressure. I didn't really get what the dentist was telling me but didn't realise that until after I'd left. Personally I think it is a dodgy tooth, but this was an emergency appt so I'm going back next week so hopefully he can sort it then.

Thanks again.

NoelHeadbands · 10/01/2013 23:00

mumat it could be blood pressure, just that it won't be as a direct result of eating this way. Please get checked just in case

mumat39 · 10/01/2013 23:26

Thanks Noel, I'll try and get to the GP to tomorrow.

Lavenderhoney · 11/01/2013 04:00

I am posting here but I also posted in general health if anyone knows anything about ovarian cysts and this woe.
I am going to have to have an emergency appointment with a gp today as I have been awake in agony I have never known. I have taken a 800mg painkiller and it took forever to work as I had chattering teeth, freezing cold, with pain.

I have never suffered from period pain and I have a cyst which has never hurt before and I have been on duhaston to increase progesterone. I stopped taking the progesterone day before yesterday and pain plus unusually heavy period started.

Is this the woe that's caused this? With all the increases of hormones? I can't have this pain.

thekitchenfairy · 11/01/2013 05:36

Hi lavender
Last night i read ssa big article about the relationship between
LC and hormones... Can't get the link to work but in a v long piece two points stuck out:

Those of us with hormonal imbalances causing a variety of conditions may suffer more severe carb flu and other symptoms such as a flare up of a pre existing condition, like your cyst, and will be more likely to experience uncomfortable changes in body temperature ie hot and sweaty or cold and shaky...

A sudden descent into a LC programme may render symptoms and pain so severe that one is tempted to give up and scoff some bready things... Article suggests that the symptoms arecpart of body's adjustment and they will pass relatively quickly ie not be constant when following this WOE, but if too hard to bear then a gradual switch to LC rather than detox approach may work better or a diet free of grain but with carbier root veg would help, still see some weight loss but no pain...

Not sure if this answers your Q, but it made sense to me as to why I am getting hot flushes and the next minute am shivering with cold...

cathyandclaire · 11/01/2013 05:43

Lavender
Is your cyst big? If you're in agony maybe it could have twisted or ruptured? all I've read suggests that low carb may reduce cysts ( but specifically in pcos so may not apply to you) so may be a coincidence-But sounds like you definitely should see someone ASAP.

WillieWaggledagger · 11/01/2013 05:49

lavender that sounds miserable. it might be the adjustment to low carb, but it might not be - i think you're right to see your gp, especially as you're in so much pain. hope it improves soon

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/01/2013 06:33

Oh lavender, hope you are sorted and feeling better very soon

Morning all Brew

Ilovemyteddy · 11/01/2013 07:17

Sorry to hear you are in such pain Lavender. Hope the GP can reassure you.

Mumat39 I haven't been in BP medication for a while as I managed to get it to an acceptable level through diet (low cal, not low carb) but it's always been borderline for medication. Now I'm normal Grin

Back down to 154 this morning so 2.6lbs lost this week. Whoop whoop!

MrsHerculePoirot · 11/01/2013 07:18

Lavender hope the pain goes very soon and your GP is helpful.

Lavenderhoney · 11/01/2013 07:30

Thanks ladies you are lovely:) and the info is very very interesting.
It's nearly 3 inches diameter. I'm about to take another dose of painkiller now and will try and get a gp appointment ASAP.

I don't feel any urge to eat or a desire for carbs. I haven't broken the boot amp rules except for a cm of white wine spritzer the other night but as dh is cooking today I will have to be very committed:) he is an excellent cook!

WillieWaggledagger · 11/01/2013 07:40

3 inches ooh golly

look after yourself LH

BlackAffronted · 11/01/2013 08:09

Oyster sauce - yay or nay?

JulesJules · 11/01/2013 08:17

Thanks Snowkey I did actually make a big frittata 2 nights ago, delish, and took the leftovers to work for lunch the next day.

I might try the waitrose thing with courgettes instead of mushrooms (which I hate).
