Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:14

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

I used to get confused with the whole turnip/swede/neep thing. Then I found out that the term "Swede" may have come from "Swedish turnip" and "neep" is also a contraction for turnip.

The other way I remember is that "turnips" are little poncy white things when called such by sissy Southerners and "neeps" (or Swede) are big strong root veg that take time to mature and are prefered by the rugged Scots. Grin

Weighed myself today and I have lost nothingHmm... I know it's only been 4 days but still..... Do you reckon it's because I'm not drinking enough water - I struggle with that. I am not aiming for a big weight loss 7-10 llbs would be great

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 16:38

janx - list out what you've eaten and drunk over the last 4 days. (And yes, not drinking the water could be one of the reasons!)

Another question (sorry Blush)
I know we're not supposed to be worrying about counting calories however if I add up everything I will eat today then I will have eaten around 2200 calories! Less than half the amount of carbs than yesterday and I've eaten more fat than protein today as well so that's good but even so the calories seem extreme.

BlackAffronted · 10/01/2013 16:55

All calories are not equal. A carb calorie is higher than a fat calorie (i think). Weight loss/gain is dependent on insulin levels and wether you are fat burning or fat storing and therefore make calories almost redundant.

BlackAffronted · 10/01/2013 16:55

Well, so I understand anyway! I may be wrong Blush.

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 16:57

Yep. Ignore the calories, Penny.

I would struggle to remember that Shock... I have an appalling memory. I know I haven't done 100 per cent as over the last 4 days I had 2 slices toast and a small bowl of porridge (not all at the same time). But have successfully avoided the mountain of cake and biscuits at work which took some will power. Here is an idea of my eating.
Yesterday
B. poached egg and two slices salami. Coffee with semi skimmed milk
L Salmon and Avocado salad
D. Lamb stew with cabbage and lots of butter
Snacks - babybel, salami and small bowl celery soup

Today
B. 2 slices of bacon and small bowl of porridgeHmm
L. 3egg omelette with cheeses and green salad with mayo
Dinner will be roast chicken with cauliflower
Snack - baby bel celery and tuna pâté.

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 17:05

Sorry, janx, but if you're still eating porridge and toast, then you're not low carbing - which is why you won't have lost any weight. You really do need to stick to the rules.

Hi, I have a question - sorry if this has been covered before. I am being forced to have a takeaway (curry) this evening. What is the best thing to order? i would like to avoid the tandoori stuff if possible - what curries are there? (I rather like lamb saag!).

or should I just sit there eating lumps of cheese looking wistfully on?

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 17:12

Why avoid the tandoori stuff? That's actually the best option for a low carber! Anything else, with a sauce - you have no idea how carby it is.

A lot of milder curries are sweetened; most curries have a base sauce made from lots of onion, which makes them very carby. Certainly avoid anything like a dhansak, which has lentils in it.

Lamb saag is probably OK, but it's impossible to know without knowing what it's been made with.

And obviously you will not be eating a poppadom or any rice and certainly not a naan bread .... !

Point takenGrin... I struggle with breakfast - I lost half a stone last year with the odd bowl of porridge so was hoping it wouldn't make too much difference. Onwards and upwards

PennyHofstadter · 10/01/2013 17:31

Thanks BIWI and Black

I did buy the Atkins book so there's a bit of light reading for me tonight!

ScaredySquirrel · 10/01/2013 17:32

I only avoid them because I find them boring! but i know they're the best option to have.

No I wont have rice or a naan bread. luckily I'm not tempted by that. Just cake and chocolate!

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 17:39

How about chicken shashlick? It's a skewer of chicken tikka with pepper and onion and tomato?

You could just take your chances and go for the curry you like - but it is a risk. Try having half the dish, and have a spinach or cauliflower or mushroom curry/side dish with it.

Can somebody point me in the direction of the recipe thread please? I can't find it!

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 19:18

Here you go!

Hello, I have two questions:-

Lots of people have mentioned full fat yoghurt, Greek yoghurt and fromage frais - which are the best brands to buy please?

Also I passed Pret a Manger on my way to work this morning and saw they had Miso soup would that be ok on bootcamp?

Many thanks and apologies if someone has already asked these questions.

Are globe artichokes ok? I did a google search and saw a medium one has about 7g carbs in it, then realised that means nothing to me. I have 2 in the fridge, it would be a shame to waste them...

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 20:12

According to fatsecret.co.uk, miso soup is 3.24g per 100g. However, there is no brand given for that - and I have no idea how much you would get in a portion. Looks reasonable, though.

OP posts:
BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 20:13

Globe artichokes are 10.51 per 100g, so look like they're a bit carby.

Bessie" I can also recommend CaptainMummy's* delish turnip gratin. Nicest thing ever!
