Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

I keep having those dreams too! Last night, I was plunging into a massive bag of Kettle crisps and hating myself. Woke up & was so relieved when I worked out it was just a dream. Even had one once where I slept on a cake

Looking forward to my weigh in tomorrow! Hoping for a 3lb loss (not much more really as I am a slow loser even on LC). Have had 7 100% perfect days.

I am panicking about this snow heading our way, Im worried that I wont get to the shops and wont have enough LC food to eat! When we had that huge snowfall in 2010, I couldnt get out the house for a week :( so Im thinking about going shopping tomorrow & getting some store cupboard items that are low carb, for emergancies. Will ask on the question thread for ideas! On the plus side, I do have a whole salmon in my freezer Grin FIL is slightly deaf, and thought I wanted for a whole salmon for our Christmas dinner, when in fact Id said gammon ha ha! So he bought us one, and it has been in the freezer since!

Hope everyone has a good day :)

GinotPrigio · 10/01/2013 07:42

Eeek, snow? When, where BlackAffronted? I might stock up the freezer with meat and frozen veg just in case!

OTTMummA · 10/01/2013 07:43

Another 2lbs down this morning! :) and I really wasn't hungry at all. Am off to the shops later, if anyone has some breakfast ideas that don't include eggs I would be grateful!

JustasmallGless · 10/01/2013 07:49

Blackaffronted - how about getting frozen veg in so that you can make soups/cauliflower bakes etc
Ham and cheese generally has long dates
Batch cooking now in preparation?

My Dsis is getting married down here in 2 weeks and it has been my mins biggest fear thAt none of the clans would be able to get down if the snow comes Sad

JustasmallGless · 10/01/2013 07:51

Mins=mum!

cocolepew · 10/01/2013 07:53

Morning all, struggling to eat a cold sausage here. I'm thinking if introducing berries from tomorrow, I'm really struggling on all the rich food. I think I would fare better on low carb rather than practically no carb Blush.

I'm a pound down this morning Smile.

Good luck losers.

MissNJE · 10/01/2013 07:57

Good morning!

Congrats to all the weight loses. I am 4.5lbs down myself today and very happy.

I had cucumber, feta cheese and red pepper for breakfast. Delicious!

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 07:58

ScaredySquirrel - unless you have been cheating or eating too many carbs, you are still in ketosis! Stop using the ketostix. You don't need them if you are following Bootcamp rules. Honestly!!!

Low carbing isn't very forgiving if you cheat, so please, please, please plan what you're going to eat at the weekend. If you relax things, you will simply kick yourself out of ketosis, and risk gaining back what you have already lost. It's not worth it.

BlackAffronted - make sure you have plenty of eggs and cheese. Veg to buy - shallots, spinach, celery, lettuce/salad, cucumber, courgettes, broccoli, cauliflower. Take advantage of the special offers on meat - 3 for £10 etc - and stockpile some good, fatty cuts of meat - e.g. shin of beef, chicken thighs, belly pork, breast of lamb

Pistey - told you the scales would move for you today! sighs with relief and ignores reference to crochet

OTTMummA* - yay! Thanks Hopefully this will keep you going past day 3

cathyandclaire - good practice for the pelvic floor Grin

Princess - you know what I'm going to say .....

Valdeeves - Recipe thread is here

Justonemoregless - let's keep everything crossed that snow has been and gone by then Sad

OP posts:
BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 08:00

cocolepew - just look at your post

  1. "I'm struggling on very low carb"
  2. "I've lost a pound"

What kind of struggle is that?!

Seriously - there's a reason for being this low carb to start with, and it's not just to mess with your mind Grin

If you're struggling with eating the sausage, then don't eat it. Have an egg. Or some yoghurt. Or leftovers from last night. Or just don't eat at all - until you're hungry. But don't introduce the food just yet. It's only day 4!

OP posts:
BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 08:01

.... and when you say 'all the rich food' what do you mean? What have you been eating? You don't have to cover everything in cream or cheese! Nor do you have to eat massive portions of everything so that you're stuffed.

OP posts:
cocolepew · 10/01/2013 08:10

I'm not eating very much to be honest, I don't like creamy food so I'm only eating cauliflower cheese as a rich food. It's all this bloody meat! I have salmon or omlettes for dinner and salads for lunch.I don't like natural yoghurt and I'm not very adventurous with veggies Blush.

I did LC last week as well, I should have waited until this week Sad. Do I have to leave now?

cocolepew · 10/01/2013 08:11

(The dog got the sausages)

BlackAffronted · 10/01/2013 08:11

Thanks for the advice, there was me thinking I had to stock up on tins like its the armegeddon Grin Have seen some ametuer forcasters suggesting we might even get as low as minus 15 next week :( Brrrr!

Ginot, think snow is predicted for Ne England, Wales and N/NE scotland anytime from Saturday to Monday - things might change though! I wouldnt mind a wee bit, but no road/school closures please!

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 08:20

No you don't have to leave, coco!!!

I eat very little creamy food, because I have discovered that cream stalls weight loss. To be honest, mainly I just eat whatever I'm cooking for the family, with either more salad/veg and no potatoes/rice/pasta, or I substitute things like celeriac/swede for potatoes

You don't have to slather food in cream or rich sauces - just make sure that you use fat too cook with and put dressings on your salads.

You don't have to eat meat - if you prefer fish, that's fine. Salmon is a perfect fish for low carbing as it is high in potassium and also an oily fish.

If this is your second week, then why not move to Bootcamp Light on Monday - i.e. see out the full two weeks on Bootcamp first? You're so nearly there, after all.

Have you had a good read of the recipe thread? That might inspire you!

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 08:21

MissNJE - Thanks yay! Brilliant.

BlackAffronted - the other thing to do, if you suspect you may be stuck at home for a while, is to do some cooking now, while you can get to the shops, so you have stuff in the freezer to turn to.

Porkster · 10/01/2013 08:24

Oh Christ, I weighed myself this morning (only bought scales yesterday evening although this is day 3) and I'm currently 185.25lbs! I feel disgusting. I've tried to add it to the spreadsheet but I'm obviously doing something wrong... can some kind soul add me in please? Unfortunately not having scales for the last two days means I have no idea if I've lost anything or not.

I have a couple of questions -

  1. Is there a minimum amount of fat you need to eat in a day?
  2. I've also started the doing The Shred, is this ok?
  3. Can anyone recommend a good book about LC'ing?
Vagndidit · 10/01/2013 08:39

My headache has finally disappeared only to wake up to a nasty sore throat and drippy nose. Thinking eggdrop soup sounds nice today.
My post Xmas bloat is fading, even from my face. Not bad for 4 days in Grin

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 08:47

Penny I've answered your questions on the question thread

skandi1 · 10/01/2013 08:59

Day 4 here. No further loss this morning. Meh. Yesterday I had:
B: plain full fat yog with vanilla (the Waitrose carb free one).
L: prawn lettuce and tomato with mayo.
D: avocado and potted crab with mayo.
Snacks: yog with vanilla, pork crackling from M&S. one small chunk of cheese.
2 coffees with splash of cream.
I think the problem was too much dairy. I ended up eating 2/3 of a 1l pot of yog. Very odd because I am not really into yog but I was craving it yesterday.

My clothes sadly don't feel any looser either. I think it's because I am not exercising.

Anyway feel a bit meh this morning and can't face the day. The DC are whining non stop and I just want to go back to bed. It's going to be a looooooong day - 10 hours till DC bedtime and counting.....

Well done to all the losers! Send some losing vibes my way Smile

BigStickBIWI · 10/01/2013 09:05

skandi1 don't expect to lose weight every day. That way madness lies! If you can't cope with seeing no loss - or even a gain, which will happen from time to time - then don't weigh daily. Switch to weekly weighing.

Exercise isn't the be all and end all.

You are losing!

There isn't a problem!

Could someone remind me of weigh in day? Is it Monday?
I've lost 7lbs since Monday and I very nearly gave up on the whole thing, looked at other diets and thought I'd give it one more shot. I have been rewarded! I think it's mainly water weight I don't look hugely different imho.
Anyhow, I'm off for some beef and cheese- I pretend it's a burger Grin
