Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Dudes, I FORGOT to have breakfast today! That never happens to me ever. I'm normally dreaming of breakfast half way through my dinner the night before. AND I had my first weight loss comment a mere week into the low carbing. Double result!

ginot, low carbing with exercise does get easier, promise. You just have to wait for your body to adapt. I had terrible problems with it when first low carbing last year, but all is good now. Running 5 to 6 miles with no probs. Apart from the usual jelly wobble probs....

skandi1 · 09/01/2013 18:21

Oh and sliced roast beef used to wrap dolcelatte or st Agur cheese makes a beautiful snack. Not to take out with you obviously.

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 18:27

Electric - hopefully you are not experiencing ketoacidosis - that is really not great for diabetics. I presume you mean ketosis, which is something entirely different!

Platoon - my address is ... Grin

Here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-carbohydrate_diet

That explains the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis and the effects of a low carb ketonic diet.

LucyVFood · 09/01/2013 18:43

Evening all,

I've got some lamb for dinner and I'm worried I'm eating to much 'bad' veg. Swede and carrots in particular :(

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 18:53

Swede is fine. Carrots less so! Just follow the list of allowed veg, and focus on those that are 3g carbs per 100g or less. (Swede is 2.3)

BIWI...shit yes i meant ketosis......i have too much bloody medical knowledge which means jack shit when i feel a bit "woo".....for your info i am not nursing anymore so no patients were hurt in the first days of this WOE.....

ShebaQueen · 09/01/2013 19:16

Hello all, I am feeling a bit better today, still sort of hollow with a slight headache, but much better than yesterday. Am persevering with the water and have made a pact with myself to get a cup of water every time I pass the water cooler at work (which is often).

I notice lots of you are eating Greek yoghurt - which brand is best for lc?

Good luck everyone!

HumphreyCobbler · 09/01/2013 19:16

Hello everyone. I am dropping water retention like nobodies business still, I look different now to the way I looked this morning even!

HugAndRoll · 09/01/2013 19:18

Sorry ladies I'm going to bow out. Have no money and have to eat what's in the cupboards. Good luck to you all x

NellVarnish · 09/01/2013 19:18

Evening all!

Just made some celeriac crisps - yum! They were divine are you sure this is a diet?, and some roasted cauliflower as I had no idea what to have for tea. Roasted them in sesame oil, and sprinkled them with garlic and chilli salt stuff.

Have got a leek and potato soup on for the family for tomorrow, and a Dreamy Creamy Spinach one for me.

Today's line up:

B: plain yoghurt
L: chicken salad with mayo, celery and cream cheese
D: celeriac crisps and roasted cauli
S: left over chicken salad

Lots of water, and weeing like an old lady. Tentatively weighed myself today and had lost 4lbs although I'm going to try not to go back on till Monday - I can all too easily become despondent if it goes up and not down.

Have been all evengelical at work, waxing lyrical about glycogen and how fat is good for you ... Grin

Keep at it everyone and arf at sugary twats - now there's a name change for you slatterly. :)

littlemissstan · 09/01/2013 19:20

Argh! Was just cooking some rice for DP's dinner (salmon with chilli butter and stir fry for me) and without thinking put some in my mouth to test if it was cooked! Only a few grains, but have I messed it up and kicked myself out of ketosis???

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 19:22

Evening all

Right I'm sure everyone is on the edge of their seat awaiting the following menu update so here goes...

B- scrambled egg with butter
L- tuna mayo and salad
T- rump steak and a mound of buttered savoy

Usual black coffee/ water. Bit light on the veg today, will try and make them up tomorrow

slatternlymother · 09/01/2013 19:23

** Hahahaaaa! I laughed out loud at this! Grin

Had chicken and butter braised cabbage (Jamie Oliver recipe) and bloody hell it was buttery. I think I can feel my arteries furring up. Is there a better recipe? My breath vapour would leave droplets of butter on a window Hmm

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 19:23

Aw HugAndRoll that's shit Sad

Do you think you'll be able to join us in a little while?

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 19:24

Well done Neil great result

NoelHeadbands · 09/01/2013 19:25

littlemiss I'm sure you won't have bounced out of ketosis don't fret

KerryKetosis · 09/01/2013 19:25

littlemisstan I did the same with a piece of pasta for the DCs' tea! I doubt a couple of grains of rice will set you back though. Don't panic!

KerryKetosis · 09/01/2013 19:28

slatternlymother my tea was like that: chicken and bacon in a butter, cream and parmesan sauce. it was very rich! good job I'm not of a delicate stomach disposition.

Or maybe if I was, I wouldn't need to do bootcamp Grin

MrsHerculePoirot · 09/01/2013 19:28

hugandroll that is tough, hope you're OK. If you do want to come back to it later, definitely talk to Ewan who is the lowcarb budget expert I think and might have some ideas that might help. I lost 1.5 stone last year by just cutting down on my carb portions at all meals over three months, so I reckon you'll get there, perhaps just not quite as fast and slow and steady wins the race.

GinotPrigio · 09/01/2013 19:38

Thank Platoon. I think I was just having a bit of a crap morning in general and probably would have felt like that even if I had been eating carbs. I'm training for a marathon so maybe need to start incorporating slow-release carbs before very long runs, but that wont be for another few weeks yet.

Skandi The celeriac chips were freaking amazing! How have I not had these before? I actually baked them in goose fat so that probably helped with the taste! Restaurants need to start including these as an option instead of normal chips!

Porkster · 09/01/2013 19:38

Wow, some great losses on here.

I was 2 pounds down this morning.

I have just been running at the gym and found it really difficult; it felt like I was running on empty. I hope this gets better as I train a lot.

mawbroon · 09/01/2013 19:55

I am boiling hot! My body temp is actually about 0.8 degrees hotter than usual which I think means that my metabolism has increased.

I am going shopping soon, I can't wait to see what I can buy Smile

Today I have eaten

B: one left over chicken thigh and small piece cheddar
L: a few almonds and some more cheddar
T: small pork chop smothered in butter and oven baked and curly kale with salt/butter/spring onions added

I can hardly believe that I have eaten so little and yet am absolutely not hungry at all.

I did absentmindedly eat a grape when I was washing them for ds2 and my goodness it was sweet!!

OTTMummA · 09/01/2013 19:59

I haven't had much to eat today, for dinner i had 2 pork loin steaks, really have no appetite at all :S

BigStickBIWI · 09/01/2013 20:00

Anyone who is suffering with training/exercise, don't worry. Once your body has adapted to fat-burning properly - which will take about 2 weeks - you will feel fine and you will be able to train as normal.
