Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Afternoon all!

Thought I would share last night's supper as it was so lovely.... A 1 inch thick pork chop fried then grilled for a few mins with goat's gouda grilled on top. (Had never tried goat's gouda....am trying to be adventurous with my cheese!)

Veg was asparagus and mangetout with sour cream.

Ohhhhh, it was luvverly was that chop! Still reminiscing lunch time today.....

ToomuchWaternotWine · 09/01/2013 16:19

Early breakfast (dog pee time) a small bowl Greek yoghurt
2nd breakfast (after school dropoff and dog walk) 2 eggs scrambled with butter and cream
L the creamy braised cabbage. Was going to have something with it and save half for tea, but it was so luvverly that I scoffed the lot. Only problem is that I used up the last of my cream, so my post school pick up decaf coffee is now black, not so nice. I love a splash of cream in coffee now, I always ask if they have cream instead of milk when I'm having a coffee out!
D will be a kind of chilli/bolognaise without beans, DH and DS will have rice, I was going to have cabbage so I might do the courgette as pasta trick.

Asda order done for tomorrow, I really hope they bring everything for my meal plan, otherwise it's a dash to Lidl on Saturday. I love Lidl actually, fab cold meats and huge litre tubs of Greek yoghurt. The fruit and veg lasts well too. I just can't always get there as often as I'd like - next town over.

TooImmatureMincePies · 09/01/2013 16:27

I'm cold - think it's all the water.

Going to get home really late tonight - am already getting hungry and I ate my last bit of yoghurt already! There really wasn't much left in the tub, so I'm glad I realised now and not tomorrow when I went to have breakfast and found the pot nearly empty.

GinotPrigio · 09/01/2013 16:37

Today has been a bit up and down for me. Woke up and felt a bit bleuh. Hard to describe, just not myself. Went for a run and my legs were like jelly and my arms were painful. Feel ok now. I'm on Day 9 so surely I should be over any carb withdrawals by now?

Looking forward to dinner though. Its ham, eggs and celeriac chips. I've never tried celeriac before so it should be interesting!

thekitchenfairy · 09/01/2013 16:39

I am loving your updates slatternly sounds like a few RL similarities tho I will doff my hat at you as you are far wittier than I Grin

skandi1 · 09/01/2013 16:41

Ginoprigiot. Don't par boil the celariac chips. That's the road to soggy mush.
And if rolled in some curry powder before being oiled and going into the oven, they are fab.

GinotPrigio · 09/01/2013 16:43

Oh thanks Skandi. The recipe I have says to par boil. I will just chuck in the oven so! How long should they take to cook?

slatternlymother · 09/01/2013 16:47

Skandi1 Yeah they sound lush, I'm going to try some.

Armed with BIWI's photo of a celeriac, I shall proceed with haste to Sainsbury's, and shall only come out waving a celeriac. I now know the difference between one of these and a swede

Ilisten2theradio · 09/01/2013 16:55

Well, what do you know I am surrounded by a bunch of celeriac fans. I hate the stuff! along with really disliking celery too.

I have to go and cook for the children now - clubs to get to, and am really hungry myself but DH not back til later. Am wondering what to do - eat myself now, or snack?

So it could be a cube or two of stilton and a pice of salami, or I could eat too and have homemade burger with cheese and mushroom and veggies. mmmmm....

I think I will snack and save mine till later.

MissNJE · 09/01/2013 17:00

Fed the last biscuits in our house to LO's grandmother today. Apart from some ice cream in the freezer I don't have any temptations anymore at home.

anewdispensation · 09/01/2013 17:09

Thought so as well MissNJE until I opened the cupboard and saw a six pack of coke!!

MissNJE · 09/01/2013 17:13

I finished all the diet coke on Sunday. Since then I only drank water/green tea. I am was a bit of a diet coke addict.

skandi1 · 09/01/2013 17:23

Gino. I cooked mine for 40 mins but that was a little too long for some of the thinnest chips. I guess it depends on thickness but anywhere between 30 and 40 I would say.

I put lashings of oil on. And whilst they don't get as chrispy the way chips can, they are far more flavoursome. Provided you like the flavour of celariac of course.

skandi1 · 09/01/2013 17:26

Oh and celariac purée is amazing too. Just boil in stock, add some of the stock and cream and purée. It's even better with chestnuts in but I am assuming they are carby and not allowed or BIWI will be after me

skandi1 · 09/01/2013 17:27

That should say puree. Stupid phone

cocolepew · 09/01/2013 17:28

Thanks for the linls everyone, I have had adrenal fatigue in the past and my adrenal glands weren't working very well after my op, I'm hoping they are getting there arse in gear now! I think I have a bit more energy. I'm a Classrooom Assistant in a special school and the class went to play unihockey today. I joined in and was a demon Grin, loads of energy. Mind you my bum and legs are killing me now.

Love the name change Rhoobs Grin

HugAndRoll · 09/01/2013 17:30

I'm struggling today. I really want Chocolate. I'm not hungry, I don't need food just WANT!

I also have a funny taste in my mouth and am a bit spaced out. I'm hoping that ketosis is around the corner but possibly not as I'm only on day 2.

Menu so far:

B - Greek Yog
L - Salad with 2 hard boiled eggs and full fat mayo
Snack - mixed olives
2.25ml water
One coffee (with semi milk as it's that or skim in work).

Not sure what to have for dinner. Will look in the fridge when I get home. May have an omlette.

BillComptonstrousers · 09/01/2013 17:30

I need a snack, but shopping is coming tomorrow. No bovril in the house, can I have a spoon of marmite in some hot water?

GinotPrigio · 09/01/2013 17:33

Thanks Skanadi. I'm hoping now I will actually like them! Never tasted celeriac before!

WillieWaggledagger · 09/01/2013 17:44

Must try celeriac chips, thanks skandi. Celeriac mash makes me horribly windy though so might need to be careful!

Purée is correct technically (French etc)

ElectricalHoHoHoBanana · 09/01/2013 17:51

i am on day three and i feel fine - deffo in ketoacidocis as i POAS (DD2 has type 1)

yesterday i felt like i had been out on the lash the night before and a was a bit hungover. Today apparently i have been a bit grumpy (but still funny according to my business partner) and i havent been so forgiving (i am usually seen as the soft one).

Right then...Poo patrol- mine have been more "solid" than usual- i have severe IBS and i usually have very runny poos. Also i used to go 10 times a day....been three times today RESULT!

I am not very hungry today.....had to make myself eat breakfast, lunch was fine and now i am thinking "oooh not really hungry" but OH and DD2 are circling me as i type!

queribus · 09/01/2013 17:56

Feeling better today, although I think I've eaten too much Blush

B two sausages and cup of tea
L french beans, two slices of ham and an avocado
D prawn stirfry

However, I've snacked on cheses, two slices of ham and some roast turkey.

Feels like I've drunk gallons of water though, and I haven't stopped peeing all day.

Yama · 09/01/2013 18:11

Just nipping in to log my food for today. Will be back later to catch up.

B - Scrambled egg (only one egg today) with ham and a sausage
L - Salad with ham, chicken thigh (even managed the skin today) and olives
S - Greek yoghurt and a slice of ham
D - Chicken and olive dish in a tomato sauce with broccoli and salad

Three teas with a smidge of milk (lacto-free) and have had 4 pints of water so far.

Feeling good, if a little tired. Ds (2) was up a lot last night. Again.

KerryKetosis · 09/01/2013 18:16

mmm...tea was chicken and bacon in an Alfredo sauce on salad leaves...mmmmmmmm...

Low Fat DP looked a tiny wee bit jealous Grin

skandi1 · 09/01/2013 18:16

Don't know if someone already has mentioned this but M&S have pork crackling!!! Ready to eat in the crisps section just like Mr Porky but with out the MSG and they are lovely and crispy and not fatty and tough.

Again they are double the price of mr Porky but I need a very portable snack I can eat out of my pocket when I take the DC to the park and playground and I always hit a low around 4pm where I have to have something.

I tried all sorts when I did Dukan last spring and its safe to say that eating prawns and ham out of your pocket is a very bad idea. And dont get me started on celery sticks .... So pork crackling is a god send to save me from carb filled snacking.
