Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

toomanyeasterbunnies · 08/01/2013 21:26

Does anyone have any tips for veggie low carb meals? I'm on day three and have found it so hard today. Just want something stodgy. I'm sick of eggs and tofu. I actually found myself skipping breakfast as I couldn't face more eggs or unsweetened yoghurt and then had two biscuits as I was so hungry. :(

HugAndRoll · 08/01/2013 21:26

Haven't had a chance to catch up with the thread as I don't get in from work until 6.40 and by the time I've done baths for the boys, house jobs, gym and dinner its this time!

B - Greek yogurt
L - ham salad with full fat low carb French dressing
D - scrambled egg, bacon and Brie.

I have drunk around 2.25l of water and I need to get in 3l according to the chart. I have been peeing like a racehorse though so my body is flushing stuff out.

I did have a coffee with cream at lunch as we went to the pub for a colleagues birthday and I was freezing cold.

cupofteaplease · 08/01/2013 21:27

I'm thinking of joining- is it too late?!

I have low carbed before, but without much success, I didn't have a support group before though.

Couple of questions: it's my birthday in a couple of weeks- can you really not drink any alcohol? Not even vodka, lime and soda?

Cheese- I thought cheese was all good when low carbing?

slatternlymother · 08/01/2013 21:32

toomany today for tea, I had an omlette with cheese and mushrooms fried in butter. Still eggs, but you can cheer then up a bit.

Is Quorn low carb?

Veggie sausages to dip in mayo/mustard and scoff?

Big pans of soup with anything other than potatoes and carrots?

Cauliflower mash?

Cauliflower cheese?

Check out BIWI's earlier link to carb free noodles? Make a stir fry?

MrsHerculePoirot · 08/01/2013 21:32

Never too late cupoftea.

Cheese is OK depending on the cheese but dairy can stall some people so you need to see what works for you. Small chunks of cheese or babybels are great snacks.

After the initial two weeks you can move to bootcamp light. This allows small amounts if alcohol - I think in the spreadsheet there are the bootcamp light rules and it will explain on there. If it is your birthday you can deffo have one!

slatternlymother · 08/01/2013 21:34

cupoftea hello! BIWI will be along in a bit, but it's only an initial 2 weeks and then things relax; so berries/nuts/certain alcohol comes back onto the menu. Vodka and soda is carb free, so if your birthday is before then I'm sure you'd be fine. And yes, cheese is all good!

Porkster · 08/01/2013 21:35

If I had any carbs left in my system, I suspect they're gone as I've just done Pump and Spinning.

My bladder was bursting from all the water, so it took my mind off the effort!

hurricanewyn · 08/01/2013 21:37

Evening all
Hope everyone's doing ok.

Another boring day here foodwise - I'm tired now, being back at work, hopefully will snap out of it soon.
B - none again
L - Salad & mayo
D - Chicken & cheese omlette

On a late shift tomorrow, so I'll make an effort with dinner before I go to work.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 08/01/2013 21:41

OK, so first day done!
B - Total Greek Yogurt, Boiled Egg
L - Ceaser Salad (no croutons) - I was out for lunch and this seemed the best option!
D - Beef Meatballs, Creamy cabbage
S - Olives, Bacon, Boiled Egg with mayo, half a celery stick and cream cheese.
Just under 3l water and 2 black coffees.
Can someone tell me if this is ok?

HumphreyCobbler · 08/01/2013 21:41

I am just weeing ALL THE TIME

Every twenty minutes. And my period hasn't arrived - this is because of my two week carb fest. When I am low carbing I have a 28 day cycle, it is brilliant. All of this is a severe incentive to stick to it.

Still, it has been two full days now, should be ketosis soon.....

NoelHeadbands · 08/01/2013 21:42

I am so tired, I'm mning from bed and will shortly be drooling into my pillow. I'm weighing tomorrow as that will be a full week of strict Bootcamp for me, so keep your fingers crossed for me that I've lost

NoelHeadbands · 08/01/2013 21:43

Sounds fine to me bullet

EwanHoozami · 08/01/2013 21:44

Bill Mr. Porky's are the least pleasant end of the scratching spectrum. But all is not lost! You can make your own without the wheat dust and artificial shite and they will Blow Your Mind. What you're looking for is Chicharrón

It does take dedication, and 12 hours in the oven at 50 degrees Grin

Or Nigella did a recipe for italian ones recently that looked rather fancy.

Ruprekt · 08/01/2013 21:45

Tis my birthday today too!

I have never met anyone in real life with the same birthday as me!!

ToomuchWaternotWine · 08/01/2013 21:45

toomanyeasterbunnies I have heard people recommending a book by Rose Eliot "the low carb vegetarian cookbook" I think it's called, worth a look. Also, have you had a look through either the bootcamp recipe thread or the sparkly new low carb recipe section updated by gless for us all? You should hopefully find some ideas there.

As this thread is so fast moving (685 posts in 2 days!) just a reminder that there is a specific bootcamp question thread now too, as this one is more for general chat, menus, and support.

NoelHeadbands · 08/01/2013 21:47

Ahh happy birthday Ruprekt

toomanyeasterbunnies · 08/01/2013 21:48

Thanks Slaternlymother. I've been jazzing up the omelettes but to be honest I'm not a great omelette fan. I also dislike quorn. I love every type of veg so I've been eating salads and stir fry's but they aren't that comforting in the cold. The Rose Elliot book I'm following doesn't seem to allow veg such as carrots, parsnips or swedes in the first few weeks so that's stew out of the window. I don't think this is going to be easy.

cocolepew · 08/01/2013 21:52

Right I'm still up and I have a theory. My alternative therapist, from now on known as my woo woman, told me that I have a lot of stress hormones in me. I'm not a particularly uptight person but my eldest DD has ongoing MH health problems and I do worry about her.

So, earlier on I heard something about work which really pissed me off. Made me very agitated and restless. So maybe this released cortisol which is the stress hormone and plays havoc with your blood sugar. I haven't even thought about sugary food until this evening.
I was watching a programme I like and the cravings just went. I realised I felt calmer (my stomach was churning before) and that's why I have came up with this theory.

Does it make any sense to anyone else?

Doshusallie · 08/01/2013 21:53

Happy birthday ruprekt!!!

Dottiespots · 08/01/2013 21:54

Hi, can I join please. I have stopped doing lo carb for ages and have gained about a stone so need to get back on the wagon. Smile

bulletwithbutterflywings · 08/01/2013 21:58

cheers noel :)

Jacaqueen · 08/01/2013 21:59

Happy birthday everyone!

Hogbites can be found in Tesco. They have no msg and contain Cornish sea salt. I love them.

I have tried making my own but they turn out more chewy than crunchy.

froufroulala · 08/01/2013 22:08

It makes sense to me coco, was really annoyed over something yesterday & suddenly wanted something sweet yet the 5 days previous had no problem cutting out the carbs. So strange. Coldethyl I honestly didn't want my cake but it was very yummy. Hope you had a lovely day Grin

skandi1 · 08/01/2013 22:08

Day 2 for me. So far so good. Feel fine. Still need to cut caffeine more if I can. My excuse is that my youngest (18mo) is a complete sleep tinker and DD (3.5yo) is a full one chatterbox during the day so I need the caffeine hits to keep going but it's an excuse

B: whole egg (x4) omelette with mushroom, leek, Prosciutto lardons. Coffee with cream. Only ate half as it was huge.
L: other half of above omelette. And coffee with splash of cream.
Snack: two bags of pork crackling - yes it was mr porky and I am ashamed. But low carb so there.

D: cod fillet with mayo, spring onion and parmasan topping and curried celariac chips. Yum.

Had 3.5l of water. The shameful mr porkys made me really thirsty and dinner tasted very salty. Think it was too much parmasan in the cod topping.

Happy birthday to the birthday folk.
And mr and mrs tickle- wow. I hope my weightloss is half as good as yours.
