Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Where did you get the hog bites from? I feel I must try them! Grin

JustasmallGless · 08/01/2013 20:42

Just made the creamy spinach soup for work- it's like pesto soup. Yum yum

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 20:43

queribus - what are you struggling with particularly - how can we help?

Re the headache, make sure you take some paracetamol.

Are you eating enough fat? Your meals don't look especially as if you are - that will definitely help you feel better.

Can you have a drink of Bovril/Marmite/Oxo, to get some salt into your system?

Don't focus on your end target. Focus on the here and now, and make sure that you have smaller, more readily achievable targets to aim for - half a stone, for example.

TooImmature - are you snacking because you're hungry or out of habit? If you're hungry, that suggests that you're not eating enough fat.

Forgot to say well done to the big losers!

Queribus keep the faith. Those first few days aren't easy but you can tell from the newbies on here who started LCing last week that once you come through it you feel great. I don't know how much weight you want to lose but if you had told me 359 days ago that I would lose almost 5st I wouldn't have believed you. And, apart from the carb-flu and the odd holiday blip, it has been easy.

Bootcamp is meant to be a bit tough to wean you off bad carbs. Even a seasoned LCer like me has had headaches since I got back on the wagon. But the results, not just on the scales but the change in your body shape and how your clothes fit, and most importantly, how you feel physically and mentally, are so worth a few days of feeling like crap and having the grumps.

Hang in there!

BillComptonstrousers · 08/01/2013 20:45

We can have pork scratchings? Please please please say yes!

SavoirFaire · 08/01/2013 20:48

Ahem. Tomatoes?

Ilovemyteddy · 08/01/2013 20:51

I saw a book today called Fat Chance by Robert Lustig about the evilness of sugar. Sorry I can't do a linky on my new iPad. I had a quick squint at the chapter about low fat vs low carb and there is an interesting sciency bit about how eating fat helps you to lose weight. I think he blogs as well so may be worth googling.

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 20:52

See the carb counter tab at the bottom of the spreadsheet

3.1g per 100g.

Bill - well you can, but make sure there aren't any nasty ingredients in them - and check the carb count on the packet. Better still, make your own!

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 20:55

Bill Look at the ingredients list here - not great!

Hi all, day 5 now and currently feeling fab this evening! I have absolutely no sugar cravings at all! This is the first time in years lol. I had salmon and veg for dinner with butter and usually after dinner I am wanting something sweet for desert. It didn't enter my head this evening and I only realised an hour later that I had not craved something sweet after my meal!
Wow I am soo happy :)
Felt abit iffy earlier today, nauseas but around 4pm after drinking loads of water I suddenly had a huge burst of energy! Got loads done round the house lol.
Downside= vile taste in mouth and feeling slightly not on the planet at times!

Ilovemyteddy · 08/01/2013 20:59

Pork scratchings are the work of the Devil - ewwww!

I am craving chocolate which is why I am on here and posting nonsense Grin

BIWI that link you posted to the video about sugar on one of the 9 million LC threads - was that my man Lustig? Could you post it again or tell me which thread it is on please? Thanks

queribus · 08/01/2013 21:01

Thanks everyone.

I'm missing bread! But I know that that's what got me here in the first place -massive portions of bread and potatoes!

And I'm finding it had to break the habit of looking at calories, trying to stay away from fat etc. Also missing fruit.

Good grief, I sound like a right moaning minny, don't I.

Ilovemyteddy - that's an amazing weight loss, you must be so pleased.

TooImmatureMincePies · 08/01/2013 21:01

Think it's mainly habit - yesterday it was hunger but that was only day 3, so I think my body was getting used to low-carbing again. I think I'm eating plenty of fat - Greek yog for breakfast; low-carb lasagna with white sauce made out of cream and cheese (mmm) for lunch; a BabyBel; bacon, courgette and leeks fried, with cream and cheese poured over them and then another BabyBel so far today. I stayed fuller for longer this afternoon - yesterday I was starving after lunch, and had to have some more yoghurt at 4ish. Today I made it to 7 before I ate anything else, but last night I started wanting to snack again in the evening after dinner.

thekitchenfairy · 08/01/2013 21:02

Helllloooo slatternly

We must have run into one another at WW or SW ...at WW I was the one getting told off because I didn't want to eat their crappy stuff and wanted to find some willpower to have a teeny amount of something made with butter or cream ... A WW cookie never cut it for me... I have tried both for the last 5 years and watched my weight creep up... And up... And up... Has been v demoralising, so this is my new beginning to prove I can do it and keep it off without being £200+ poorer a year!!

I think I am in a mahoosive sugar withdrawal... Darling DS1 keeps offering to make hot choc, a skill perfected in Xmas hols, I fecking hate the stuff but at 4pm I nearly spooned it up straight from the jar....

TooImmatureMincePies · 08/01/2013 21:03

I have a splitting head and neck ache but this could be related to me being back at work after mat leave and suddenly having to sit at a PC all day again.

mawbroon · 08/01/2013 21:03

Oooh, yes, looking forward to getting some pork scratchings next time I go shopping!

I can't believe how clean my teeth feel, although my mouth does feel a bit greasy from the celeriac deep fried in dripping that I had at lunch!

I had a really busy day today coupled with sick toddler and normally at this time of night I would be wiped out. Sure, I'm tired, but nothing like I normally would be!

ach, I'm avoiding all grains, and the pork scratching have wheat in them. Ah well.

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 21:08

I do too - but only because I make my own!

Ilovemyteddy · 08/01/2013 21:11

Queribus I understand the bread craving! And yes I am very pleased with my weightloss and can honestly say it has not been difficult (except when I cheated!)

Thanks for the linky BIWI

I've been drinking so much water today, it's like a constant craving, so just checked and the ketones tester thingy went dark purple.

Is this something to do with potassium? I already add salt to food, but I'm veggie and don't like avocados.. Help!

WillieWaggledagger · 08/01/2013 21:16

I'll add that link to the video to the resources tab on the spreadsheet tomorrow

NellVarnish · 08/01/2013 21:16

Thanks timid, what you said about improvising has rung a bell - I need to plan more and try out some new recipes at the weekend. lazy

Will read back through thread and write some down.
