Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Some people do suffer with a " change" in bowel movements shall we say. However as soon as I start eating carbs now, particularly wheat I can't get off the bog.

Bessie123 · 08/01/2013 19:53

coco I have decaf coffee (grind decaf beans) with some cream and a drop of vanilla essence when I feel like that. Or a small piece of carrot, which tastes very sweet

ShebaQueen · 08/01/2013 19:54

I am suffering from carb flu and am feeling really ropey.

Am persevering though and still drinking loads of water. Early night methinks.

Well done to everyone.

NellVarnish · 08/01/2013 19:55

Oooh well done to dharma and mr and mrs tickle, impressive first week! Well done to everyone else too and happy birthdays to one and all!

B: Was in a rush this morning so bought some yoghurt at a teeny co-op, their own make as they had nothing else but then was scared to have it as it was 6.2g - is it still ok? I had a bit of salami instead (not great I know) and surprisingly it kept me going till lunch when I was a little fat piggypig and had ...

L: tuna in oil (drained), dollop of mayo on little gem lettuce. And two celery sticks with Philly

D: panicked a bit when I got home from work as had to rustle up cheesy beans on toast for six and I was hungry. But strangely not tempted. had two scrambled eggs with buttered mushrooms.

S: bit of cheese

Bit of a headache, not too bad though.

This thread is brilliant, inspirational! I love to hear what everyone else is cooking/eating. But I need to try some new things out at the weekend so I don't get bored and fall off the wagon into a pile of toast and Nutella. Grin

timidviper · 08/01/2013 20:05

Good luck with the carb flu everybody, I've been lucky enought to not suffer it, I just feel lightheaded for a day or two when I do a strict lc.

Nell You won't get bored. I have got bored of WW, SW and assorted others but that is because the food is dull and you really have to try to make it enjoyable. On this the scope is endless and there are some really good recipes around to try. I find the hardest thing is improvising if you are out or haven't planned.

cocolepew · 08/01/2013 20:06

I don't like coffee and have my tea black . I've had a cup of tea and will probably go to bed early!

littlemissstan · 08/01/2013 20:10

I was worried about calories too, so put everything I ate today in MFP as best I could (had lunch out) and it was waaaaaay less than I thought - about 1300 cals for:
B: Greek yogurt
L: small Caesar salad without croutons, followed by confit duck leg with braised red cabbage and creamed leeks
D: big bowl of leftover roast chicken fried up with Savoy cabbage, courgette, leek, black olives and cubed up feta with a tiny bit of pesto and double cream...

It's the carbs that have the cals!

FurryDogMother · 08/01/2013 20:11

coco sometimes I find I have hungry days - and the good news is that they often come before a bit of a whoosh as far as loss goes - hope it's the case with you!

Dinner tonight was fresh prawns cooked with garlic and chilli butter, over a bed of shredded lettuce and half a chopped beef tomato. It was bloody lovely!

MrsHerculePoirot · 08/01/2013 20:11

Hola everyone! Happy Birthday to everyone who has birthdays today - I was going to name check you, but now I have finally got to the last page I can't remember who you are sorry!!!

Billcomptonstrousers I find that if I have to much cream (and it was the same with milk previously) then I get the tummy gurgling and TMI ALERT very loose bowel movements quite quickly. I also get that when I first get back into low carbing if I have been on the carbs for a short while - but it soon settles down.

Everyone suffering carb flu KEEP GOING - your bodies, and your heads, are just trying to get used to the new WOE. You need to stay strong, it only lasts a few days and then you'll feel so, so much better! Keep drinking water, eating lots of green leafy veg/salad etc.

Tips for avoiding snacking in evenings if you are trying to that we have gleaned from other threads:

  • drink a(nother) glass of water
  • drink peppermint tea or other herbal/fruit teas you don't associate with eating something with
  • clean your teeth then you won't want to eat again
  • go to bed early!
TryBreatheTwinkleFly · 08/01/2013 20:13

Well I was finding it hard last night, had bit of a moment of craving, but didn't give in Smile

Today:

B cheesy scones made with ground almond plus bit of full fat Philly.

L tuna in oil, low carb full fat mayo, salad with home made vinaigrette, sprinkled with flax seed and bit of avocado

D home made aubergine, mozzarella and parmesan moussaka with home made 'bread' made from ground almond, butter, cream, eggs, baking soda and a dash of cinnamon!

SO nice to have something bread like but it felt nicer than actual bread Smile

Drink- water, black tea and black coffee plus berrocca.

SavoirFaire · 08/01/2013 20:14

Checking in. Hello everybody.

One quick question first. Are we really allowed tomatoes? I thought there were no tomatoes in bootcamp???

Anyway today:

B: 2 eggs mashed with butter. Now a standard brekky and always gets me through til lunchtime which is fab.

L: Leftovers from last night: chicken-y satay-thing, with some rather unsatisfying vegetable soup on the side.

D: Lovely beef casserole with celeriac, aubergine and a cheesy broccoli accompaniment.

DH is enjoying this WOE! Neither of us have checked our weight yet. I bloody well hope he has lost weight by the end of the week or he'll be off the wagon and I'll have wine on the table at dinner which will be a nightmare.

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 20:14

PLEASE STOP WORRYING ABOUT AND COUNTING CALORIES! WE DON'T DO THAT ON A LOW CARB DIET!

OP posts:
BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 20:15

coco - it's that little devil 'sugar' that's taunting and tempting you. Don't give in. You will just ignore all your good work so far! ignores reference to blackberries for now

OP posts:
LucyVFood · 08/01/2013 20:21

No problems with food here, even ignored the cookies out at work today without any problems! And I'm loving the butter. Headache's back but I think I have a throat infections/cold type bug.

Picking up some lovely grub ideas from the meal plans on here.

Today I had:

Two scrambled eggs with Philly
Ham Salad
Chicken drumsticks with carrot/swede mash, white cabbage and broccoli.

Ilovemyteddy · 08/01/2013 20:23

Evening all. I see BIWI has her Big Stick out!

Happy Birthday to those of you who are celebrating today. It's mine on Sunday and I can see that those Capricorn traits of perfectionism and determination are being well used on this thread Grin

I've just had a massive wardrobe cull and am Shock at the hugeness of some of the clothes I was wearing a year ago. I have hit the sales big time and can never go back to anything above a size 14!

Keep going everyone. It's so worth it!

timidviper · 08/01/2013 20:23

If anyone wants an occasional crunchy snack, can I recommend Hogbites. I don't usually like pork scratchings as I find the softer ones too fatty and the the hard ones make me fear for my teeth! These are less extreme so are much nicer and come in a smaller bag so are good for a snack.

froufroulala · 08/01/2013 20:28

whispers 'I had a piece of birthday cake' Sad

queribus · 08/01/2013 20:28

Struggling today Sad

B two cold sauasges
L ham salad with whole avocado
D chicken breast with courgette & mushrooms cooked in coconut oil and green beans

Snacked on cheese and another sausage

Have headache and just feel grumpy. And have such a long way to go it feels impossible

Sorelip · 08/01/2013 20:31

MulledWine I used your recipe for cheese sauce, minus the Worcestershire sauce. You are a goddess. That was genuinely the best cheese sauce I've ever had.

I had it over leeks. Hmmm!

DharmaBumpkin · 08/01/2013 20:32

Thanks all

YY to the lack of cravings... Was at college today which tends to be my the kids aren't watching so I don't have to be a good role model with my eating chips & chocolate ahoy time, and was not even slightly wanting any chips. Bacon and Avocado salad was just perfect!

Yama · 08/01/2013 20:34

LucyVFood - I know what you mean about being able to ignore 'treats' at work. I feel like I am walking taller in my superior knowledge about food and can therefor sail past anything which previously may have been tempting.

TooImmatureMincePies · 08/01/2013 20:35

You can do it, Coco and Queribus!

I think snacking is real problem for me. At work it's okay because I wouldn't normally snack at work so much, but at home I'm terrible. I'm eating things like cheese, mainly, or ham if there is some (finished now). I think I'll give myself a few days to get used to low-carbing again and then try to cut out the BabyBels. Anyway, we've nearly finished them now.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/01/2013 20:39

Curried cauliflower soup. Lovely and really hitting the spot. Recipe in low carb section of Recipes.

Keep going all Smile.

slatternlymother · 08/01/2013 20:41

Having an egg mayo salad tomorrow for lunch, breakfast will probably be plain yoghurt again (so refreshing) and dinner will be chicken and butter braised cabbage.

Defrosting some sausages to have for breakfast on Thursday

JustasmallGless · 08/01/2013 20:41

Sore lips- I just copied then all over!!
Glad you like it though Grin
