Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 07:40

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Justasmallgless

I had eggs with cheese for breakfast, cucumber and red pepper.

For lunch I had sausages with salad.

I drink a lot and I didn't take paracetamol. I am still feeling really tired and have no energy at all.

Lighthousekeeping · 08/01/2013 15:58

What is it with lettuce leaves?Grin I have a bag of ceaser salad at home maybe I could use that.

Oh whilst I'm here is there any kind of nice tasting yoghurt I could use?

JustasmallGless · 08/01/2013 16:03

Me and Dosh both recommend the Lidl greek yoghurt. You could add vanilla extract (but not one with added sugar) if you cant eat it on its own.
AFter bootcamp you can eat it with a few berries. I also like Total Full Fat greek yoghurt.

Miss NJE - you may be suffering carb withdrawal. Have you tried a cup of Bovril or something else with salt/potassium/magnesium in? Sometimes that can be an issue.
Are you on day 2?
I didn't suffer massively with carb withdrawal/carb flu but I know for some on day 2-3 it can hi

littlemissstan · 08/01/2013 16:03

Happy birthday to all the birthday girls and boys - it is also Elvis' and David Bowie's today so you are in good company :)

So I wanted to share my latest revelation about this woe - just been for lunch with a client and was so panicky about there being something I could eat. But it was SO EASY to choose - am stuffed with Caesar salad (no croutons) and then duck with braised cabbage and creamed leeks. Duck was meant to come with potatoes but I asked to swap them with the leeks - and there was no fuss, just an 'of course' - not sure why I thought there would be, but there you go... Plus glowing feedback from my client, so a good day all round :)

Was also another 1lb down this morning, though DP has told me off for weighing myself every day.

JustasmallGless · 08/01/2013 16:03

Platoon - just snorted water down my nose at adding danger to your day!!

JustasmallGless · 08/01/2013 16:05

well done to littlemisstan and all the other losers.
Just a word of warning to those who are fed up with "only' losing 1-2lbs on the first week.
It's a race, not a marathon and its about healthy eating.
Make sure you measure yourselves - my arms are looking fab and if I got my arse in gear and did Shred properly they would be amazing :)

gless really comes to something where pooing in public is my only way of getting an adrenaline rush, eh?

There was someone in the stall next to me too. Double danger!

Jacaqueen · 08/01/2013 16:16

Gless I think you mean it is a marathon and not a sprint.

Maybe you don't mean that at all!

It is so fantastic to see your reactions to the weight loss. Well done to all of you who are doing so well. I lost 9 lbs on my first week way back in April. Don't think it will be so much this time but you never know.

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 16:19

Platoon - you made me LOL! Did you see the last episode of Peep Show, where the little boy did a crap in a showroom loo? I had this image of you in B&Q, on a display stand Grin

littlemissstan - it's great eating out on this WOE, isn't it? No trying to calculate the calories or agonising over how much fat is in everything!

And can I just absolutely endorse what JustasmallGless has said? We are not in competition with each other - everyone is different. We all have different amounts to lose and we all have different biochemistry - which means we will all lose at different rates.

Yes, it's frustrating to see others losing huge amounts - but you know the expression "slowly surely wins the race" ....

Grandma everyone has been very kind to you, so I think I will have to wave my big stick at you. You must make sure that you don't self-sabotage. Don't have things like rice pudding to hand - and certainly don't go looking for them. Make sure you have good, low carb snacks (that you like to eat) available if you need a snack. But hopefully, as long as you're strict over the next couple of days, it shouldn't be too disastrous.

Electric - yes, definitely you need to get better at eating fat! It's a key part of this WOE. I hope the M&S trip did the trick and your blood sugar is at a better leve.

Platoon I just roared at your emergency poo Grin

Well I had mussels for lunch, and really not sure what I want for dinner. Thinking omelette but not sure I want eggs again Im in a real 'cant be arsed' mood. Have so much spinach in the fridge! Have salad too but dont think I want anything cold.

One thing I need to do is write down a load of the low carb recipes and then can meal plan accordingly, and be ready with a list for the shop at the weekend. Remind me tomorrow morning, I'll never do it tonight Smile

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 16:22

MissNJE how much fat are you eating? It doesn't look as if you've had much. More fat will help you, as will salt.

Salmon, spinach and avocado are also all good things to help you through carb flu. But it should pass shortly. Take some paracetamol and have a quick kip if you can.

Vagndidit · 08/01/2013 16:25

Anyone else coping with a sugar "detox" headache?? I Am miserable today...combined with coming up at the end of my period (when i usually have some sort of hormone crash migraine) Ouch. I just want to stab my eyes out.Hmm

BigStickBIWI · 08/01/2013 16:29

Take some paracetamol, Vagndidit - avoid ibuprofen/aspirin as these can stall your weight loss. Drink plenty, eat lots of fat and make sure you're getting plenty of sodium (add salt to your food), magnesium (spinach is great) and potassium (salmon and avocado are good here).

It will pass soon - honestly!

Happy birthday to those with birthdays!!

I am over drinking water I think. Thirsty all the time. Might buy sea salt so I can suck the crystals. Anything other then losalt for potassium as I hate losalt.

I will get around to de-caffing my system but it won't be whilst I am fighting meds that cause dowsiness or trying to change my body clock for stupid o'clock starts. Give me a couple of weeks to adjust to all that other change then clip me around the head with the stick.

All I want to do atm is to crawl into bed and sleep. But ds is due out and I have to drive him there and back so can't even get an early as would like night. Can't remember if anyone else found they needed more sleep/had improved sleep patterns with this woe. I know mine improved last bootcamp. But that might simply have been the fact that i tried and failed to de-caff system at the same time.

Sorelip · 08/01/2013 16:39

Happy birthday to those with birthdays today.

Trying to post but ds is wrestling me for the ipad. Will be back laTer

onawhim · 08/01/2013 17:16

Hello all, and well done so far!

I've been lurking but LC'ing from yesterday - but need help!
Fridge is well stocked but cooker has packed in, so just left with micro and I can't face only eating salad :-(

I can do celeriac mash in micro, and some fish, any other ideas for me?
TIA

slatternlymother · 08/01/2013 17:19

Tired from work and I want a sleep and 6 chip sandwiches Sad

BlackAffronted · 08/01/2013 17:27

6 chip sandwiches would make you feel far worse though, the guilt and the carb load will feel crap! So dont do it!

onawhim - what veg have you got in? You could steam some green beans etc, and make a garlic butter to pour over them. You can also do scrambled egg in the micro.

cocolepew · 08/01/2013 17:32

Hope everyone had a good day, I am dying for something sweet Shock

Had salmon and cauliflower cheese for dinner (again!).
I've cooked 6 beef and pepper sausages (M&S 1.6g carb). I'll have some of them cold for my breakfast.

BlackAffronted · 08/01/2013 17:33

Have made a budget, family friendly low carb tea tonight - ticking all the boxes! Its meatballs in a tomato butter sauce (salad for me, spaghetti for the therest). Lidl sell a big pack of beef mince for £2 which was enough for 5 of us, 2 shallots (bag of shallots 49p in Lidl just now), 2 tins chopped toms, large bit of butter & a large onion (for flavour, it doesnt get eaten). Also a handful of grated cheddar to bind the meatballs, and a sprinkle of dried hebs. Probably less than £4 for the whole meal!

onawhim · 08/01/2013 17:38

Ah forgot about scrambled eggs in micro - thanks BlackAffronted.

I've got cabbage, celeriac, mushrooms, spinach and salad stuff. Also sausages! Might have to dig my slow cooker out and bung them in tomorrow...

JustasmallGless · 08/01/2013 18:02

Jacaqeen Blush thanks got all me similes and metaphors mixed up!

GinotPrigio · 08/01/2013 18:04

onawhim definitely get that slow cooker out. I have meatballs in tomato sauce in my slow cooker at the moment and it smells delicious. You could do some kind of sausage casserole in it!

Food for me today has been good:
Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs and butter
Lunch: A mix of leftover prawn cocktail and leeks in phili sauce
Snack: Bacon bits, mmmmmm
Dinner: Meatballs in tomato sauce with courgette spaghetti

Are there any others on here trying to lose weight for their wedding? Or am I the only chubby bride in the village? Wink

JustasmallGless · 08/01/2013 18:05

In from work and swimming lessons

Am trying cocolepew's roast cauliflower recipe with cream and Parmesan with leftover pork
Have to say I'm not a massive fan of the braised cabbage. Got a nice recipe for braised cabbage and leeks which will add later
