Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

Jacaqueen So should I fry some bacon in the pan and then 'dry it out' sort of in the oven do you reckon?

also, can anyone recommend good grazing snacks for the evening? On any other diet, I'd have made myself a big dish of fruit salad but I can't fall back on that now.

slatternlymother - one if the great joys of this WOE is that you don't feel hungry. Because your blood sugar levels are stabilised, you simply don't get the same hormonal triggers telling you to eat. So you should find that you don't need to snack. You certainly ought to try not to plan to snack.

That said, snacking can be a difficult habit to break - and it is usually a habit that we're indulging. On a low carb diet, nuts/seeds are really good, but because they can get quite carby quite quickly they are not allowed in the first couple of weeks on Bootcamp. Other, more suitable snacks might be:

olives - virtually zero carbs
cheese
cucumber (try topping with pate or a bit of cream cheese)
hard boiled eggs
cold meats

I suppose you could fry the bacon first but I think just bung it in a hot oven.

My snack of choice is pork scratchings. There is a brand called Hogbites that don't have any msg or other nasties. Having said that though they are not exactly healthy. But after a few days you really won't need to snack.

I have missed lunch!

Didn't quite get round to soup making and have not felt hungry, so forgot, but off to have something now. Thinking of possibly rule number one. Blush

I like kale crisps if I'm feeling nibbly. Shredded kale sprayed with olive oil and roasted til crispy, delicious with sea salt and black pepper or Chinese style like seaweed sprinkled with 5 spice :)

Ilisten2theradio you can cook any curry and just leave out the chilli. I make a lot of curries and usually prefer to use spices for flavour rather than heat. It makes them more child friendly too.

You have to keep an eye on the kale as I find it can burn very easily. Probably takes about 10 mins in my oven at 200.

I think a separate thread for questions would be a good idea. Especially for the first few weeks.

Snacks- anything low carb cubed so cooked meat, cheese, - boiled egg, veg, salad leaves - add a squirt of hellmans mayo and enjoy.
Coffee with double cream and a spot of no sugar vanilla extract is a wonderful treat and fills you up.
Think ahead if possible - so boiled egg and crispy bacon can be snacks for today or breakfast tomorrow whichever is needed.

Sainsbury's is 10.6g carbs per 100g, so it's quite carby (as it would be, as it's made from chick peas, which aren't allowed on Bootcamp).

Their Basics version is less carby, at 9.1g per 100g. Personally I would avoid it for the first two weeks of Bootcamp.

Ladies, my sister came back from the USA this morning and she had not seen me since mid december. When we got home and I took off my coat, her jaws dropped. She is now going to join me and I have also been getting comments on how I am glowing.. I am so thrilled....

So, is cheese generally OK for snacking then? I don't eat meat or boiled eggs (fussy, I know!) so am struggling slightly for things to nibble on...
