Week 1 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

Morning, soon-to-be-losers!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Here is a reminder of the rules of Bootcamp:

1.Eat three, proper meals a day
You must eat breakfast. It doesn?t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you?re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn?t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food, and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.
Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food ? this is where your carbs should come from.
But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list (see below). You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy (apart from butter, which is unlimited).
If you are still drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.
The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink

7.No alcohol

8.No fruit

9.No nuts/seeds

10.No sugar or artificial sweeteners

oh yes and bacon! you can put bacon in the oven for 10 mins ish so you don't have to stand there frying it if you're multi tasking!

Rooobs · 07/01/2013 14:10

no-egg breakfast ideas

PlatoonBuffoon · 07/01/2013 14:13

Afternoon all. Just wanted to say well done to everyone and also to say how inspiring this thread is. I don't post a lot because I'm not very interesting but am doing lots of eavesdropping and you're all marvellous! Day 5 for my and 5 pounds down! Feeling fabulous.

(could be here some time....)

cathyandclaire · 07/01/2013 14:14

Mel this WOE is BRILLIANT for keeping your blood sugar stable (there's a video showing it somewhere...I'll try and find it) none of the horrible lows that you get with refined carbs and sugar :)
Once you're in the swing of things you'll feel so much better.

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 14:16

In M&S, you can buy crispy bacon rashers ready done from the chiller section. If I bought streaky bacon, fried it in butter and let it go cold, would the end result be the same? So I could smash them in for a quick breakfast on the go?

littlemissstan · 07/01/2013 14:23

This moves so fast! I have come back because I would like all of you somebody to congratulate the fact that my whole office just had pizza delivered for lunch but I turned it down and stuck with my salad. And actually, it looked all brown and bleugh, and mine was all colourful and lovely (and had bacon and cheese in it anyway).

slatternly I did that yesterday, crisped up a pack of bacon and have so far had it chopped up in soup, with my salad at lunch and mixed with egg mayo, it was lovely and very near the M&S ones which I LOVE.

EldritchCleavage · 07/01/2013 14:27

BIWI please add me to your spreadsheet.

I am 76kg (12 stone 1) down from 92 kg just after DD was born in late 2011. I've done low carb since the summer with success but fell off the wagon spectacularly when my father was diagnosed with incurable cancer in Dec. I need to get back on the wagon and down to about 69 kg, not least because I'm in the terrible badly-dressed limbo between maternity clothes and my normal wardrobe.

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 14:27

GO LITTLEMISSSTAN!

Too far?

HumphreyCobbler · 07/01/2013 14:27

Guy - you may need to up your salt/potassium intake? I generally need to when I start drinking lots of water. I use LoSalt, I pour some onto slices of cucumber and eat it. Rank I know, but you notice the difference straight away.

TooImmatureMincePies I have added your weight to spreadsheetSmile

Well done to those already a few days in and loosing weight, it is so motivatingGrin

Ilisten2theradio · 07/01/2013 15:05

popped in to see what people are doing and was shocked a t how long this has grown already.
Have survived breakfast and lunch despite having to make cheese tosties for everyone else.
I have been reading everyones plans for dinner - thinking ooh that sounds nice but.... only to have to disguard lots as DS is allergic to eggs nuts fish and sesame. It makes cooking a bit limited. - Having said that after the DS's had their food at lunch I did have omlette and salad, but don't fancy cooking twice later.
I need some inspiration on what to cook with the chicken mini breast fillets I have.
Anyone?

ToomuchWaternotWine · 07/01/2013 15:06

ouch!

ToomuchWaternotWine · 07/01/2013 15:09

Radio There's a nice chicken curry recipe on the recipe thread, it's adapted from the IPD Butter chicken I think, I've done various versions of it dep what spices I have in. It's a good standby recipe for me now, I do rice for Ds and DH and just have a bigger bowlful of the curry for me! (Or maybe with some green veggies if I have some spare)

captainmummy · 07/01/2013 15:10

Wow = lots of new people, very fast thread!

Those asking whther mayo/soya etc is low-carb - check the label, or google it. Anything with carbohydrates under 5g/100g is ok. Check ingredients. Anything ending in -ose will be a sweetener of some sort. (sucrose, glucose, lactose...)

Meant to advise mumat39 on the other thread regarding her roast chicken - what I do is season the chicken, stick half a lemon and garlic inside and the rest of the lemon chopped up around roasting dish. pour about 1 pint of water over, and roast. The water steams the meat and keeps it moist, and the resulting juices make the gravy. (add oxo cube and some cream and tomato puree)

Ds2 has cooking practise today, he is making PaellaSadGrin He and ds3will have to eat it. I'm going to try the courgette carbonara!

WillieWaggledagger · 07/01/2013 15:10

guymartin - i never have been a great cook, never been that interested in trying to cook beyond making something that is reasonably edible, but this woe has had the knock-on effect of making me up my game cooking-wise. i now actively seek out interesting cuts of meat and alternative veg dishes. i am still happy to eat the same meal several times in a week, but i've found the confidence to try new things. i hated the fat on meat before, but have developed a taste for it - low carbing has definitely expanded my palate too

i use hellman's mayonnaise - there are others that are lower carb (e.g. delouis) but i eat quite a lot of lunches that are cold meat + mayo + salad and it wouldn't be affordable for me. hellman's is widely available and low carb enough for me

PrincessSparkle86 · 07/01/2013 15:13

Afternoon all :)
New thread... Woo!

Im feelin sorry for myself today as not only have i been up most of the night with my chicken pokd child having nightmares ive got a cold and feel miserable... Booo!

Lunch was 3 eggs scrambled with butter
Dinner will be roast chicken with some roasted butternut (only a bit as its quite carby) some spinach, mangetout and some cabbage!

Heres hoping we all get on our way to reaching our targets in this bootcamp :) x

MissNJE · 07/01/2013 15:16

What is a realistic goal to lose during the 10 week bootcamp? My start weight is 181.4lbs. Do you think 10-15lbs are realistic?

Ilisten2theradio · 07/01/2013 15:18

toomuchwater personnally I would love the curry. I have aproblem with DS though as he won't eat anything spicy as the tingling feeling on your toungue from chilli or pepper is the same as you get from the beginning of an allergic reaction - such a pain. I have a feeling I may cook something with flavour and make him plain chicken at this rate.

littlemissstan · 07/01/2013 15:19

Thanks all Grin bows

MakeNoResolutions · 07/01/2013 15:21

Oh wow, don't think I'll be able to keep up during the week ! My first day went well, I weighed in this morning and had a little gain over Christmas but nothing that can't be undone in a week or so.

Jacaqueen · 07/01/2013 15:24

My you lot like to chat!

I can definitely recommend bacon cooked in the oven. I put streaky bacon over the turkey crown at Christmas and it was the tastiest part of the meal.

slatternlymother · 07/01/2013 15:27

MissNJ I think that is realistic; I am aiming for similar Smile

captainmummy · 07/01/2013 15:28

Makeno - why can't you keep it up? Which meals are you struggling with?

NJE - 1 lb a week loss is realistic, I'd have thought. A good loss rate.

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 15:32

MissNJE - obviously the amount you lose will depend on how well you stick to the plan! I would have thought, though, that 10lbs ought to be a minimum loss, as that's only 1lb per week.

Last Bootcamp we had one participant who lost over a stone in the first week! Obviously that's a bit extreme, but you can see a pretty significant loss, especially in the first couple of weeks. Weeks 3 and 4 can be more problematic, but after that, you can expect to lose 1-2lbs per week.
