Me and my husband are thinking about doing the Atkins diet for 6 weeks before we go on holiday, but I am a fussy eater and not really sure what we should and shouldnt be eating. Ive just had bacon and eggs for breakfast, but any suggestions for lunches and dinners.

I found it really difficult. You're supposed to use additive free bacon and sausage, which I found dificult to get. I din't lose a whole lot. The amount of fat or butter that I was supposed to use just made me feel ill. After 2 weeks, I would have killed for a sandwich or some rice.

gscrym · 18/04/2006 10:46

If you want the books, I may still have them. I'll go check.

gscrym · 18/04/2006 10:49

Nope, either gave them away or threw them out in a fit of carbo-starved madness.

yes, after the first couple of days quite easy - lost loads in first 2 weeks but felt a bit weak but this improved.

Don't know whether I could keep it up for 6 weeks though!

(side effect - no f*arting Grin)

tootiredtotalk · 18/04/2006 11:12

My DH is currently doing the Atkins, I tried was really up for it, but I think my portion sizes were too big, I only lost 7lb and then nothing. I do cook his food and most of it is fabulous
Chicken curry
Garlic prawns
omelette for break fast
some sausages as long as the a v low carb.
beef stroganoff.
Steak
Salmon
there is a website that you can use for free. It has plenty of recipes, I think it was all just to yummy for me! DH has currently lost one stone, but I actually think it might be two and I think it does work better for men.Envy

oh and he does still fart for England:o

mumball · 18/04/2006 11:21

JoolsToo · 18/04/2006 11:28

gosh mumball - me and a friend did it together and we noticed after a couple of weeks 'hey! we haven't farted!' Grin

I'd have scrambled egg or egg and bacon for breakfast
chicken salad for lunch with shredded veg
mixed grill or steak/stroganoff for tea - also did a lasagne without the lasagne! Grin use cream instead of white sauce add lashings of mozzarella

tootiredtotalk · 18/04/2006 11:32

what vegetables are you allowed. I only eat peas and carrots but my dh will eat anything. Also what salad stuff can you eat.

OP posts:
mumball · 18/04/2006 11:38

definately not peas

mumball · 18/04/2006 11:39

Girlies fart less then men anyway :o

JoolsToo · 18/04/2006 11:40

mumball · 18/04/2006 11:40

the web site should tell you, but I shall go and have a look in the book! BRB

mumball · 18/04/2006 11:46

Diet induction vegetables

mumball · 18/04/2006 11:51

Onions have a huge carb content, and I think carrots are not allow either, at least not for the first two weeks.

Just found some more :-

Asparagus string beans Cabbage Beet Greens Cauliflower (which pureed makes a sort of mash potatoe favour) Chard Aubergine Scallions Leeks Spinach Summer Squash Courgettes Okra Pumpkin Turnips Kale Avocado (hooray) Celery root Tomato Bean Sprouts Water chestnuts snow pea pods Brussel Sprouts Artichoke hearts Hearts of palm.

I think I might give atkins another go after reading that lot.:)

Sorry if I've made any spelling mistakes

JoolsToo · 18/04/2006 11:56

well its years since I did it - maybe not the onions at first but I deffo had the carrots - didn't seem to make any difference. I don't tomatoes are allowed at first are they but dh had them to no detriment

mumball · 18/04/2006 12:01

says tomatoes in the book Wink which I just quoted from. But this is the NEW Dr Atkins Diet book, not an old one you know:o

mumball · 18/04/2006 12:01

NO CARROTS :o

joelalie · 18/04/2006 13:07

Nope no carrots!!! Actually I don't much like carrots so no problem there. Tomatoes are high in sugar but have so many health benefits tha Atkins recommends them in moderation. Spring onions or leeks are OK (raw leeks are quite nice) and ordinary onions are OK....sadly not red onions.

Most important thing is drink at least 3 litres of water.

Other things to remember is that milk is high in sugar - something like 5-6g per 100g so you have to go easy with it in milk of coffee.

I lost 1 stone in 5 weeks and the weight slowly came off after that. I came off Atkins about 8 weeks ago after 18 months. I feel so yucky now and I am eating soooo much!!! Back on Atkins on Monday - DDs b'day party on Saturday so I want to enjoy one more slice of cake first Grin

hullabaloo · 18/04/2006 20:43

Tootiredtotalk, I have an extra copy of "Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution" if you would like it. (The book company delivered two but when I phoned to tell them they told me just to keep it!) Let me know your email address if you want it and I'll get your details from you.
