Week 1 Weigh-In - Little Black Dress Low Carb Boot Camp

WillieWaggledagger · 30/09/2012 16:17

i know you're all dying to get started on the low carb boot camp, and for those who haven't done this before, here is the link to the spreadsheet where you should record your starting weight for Monday 1st October in column c next to your name. Please don't touch any other columns for now

weight is recorded in lbs, so if you have problems converting from kg or stones, FiddledeFat made a handy widget which can be found in the tab at the bottom labelled 'conversion'

if your name isn't on the spreadsheet then you can add yourself by adding a new line and dragging the formulae down from an adjacent row, or just ask me to add you and I will do so as soon as i can

good luck with the first week of bootcamp!

Morning all & chin up to everyone who's just starting on this WOE.
This is the hardest bit - when carb flu kicks in, you're still craving carbs & feel like you're depriving yourself when you look around the supermarket. But what other diet allows so many lovely things like cheese, cream & all the tasty cuts of meat? Just hang on in there - the cravings pass & you will def see the results Smile

Today I had more pork shoulder for breakfast, chicken is out of the freezer for lunch & I'm having more pork for dinner with mashed swede, brussel sprouts with a bit of bacon & cauliflower cheese.

catstail - I think (but obv can't speak for everyone) that most people aren't going for low cal as well as low carb, but you will find that a high fat diet fills you up more so that eventually you snack less, which could be why so many menus look like they're low cal too. But you've got the freedom on this WOE to snack if you need to, so long as you're making the right choices.

I monitor my cals, by using MFP - primarily to keep track of my carbs. Particularly when I started I had no idea of what veg was high or low carb, so it was useful, but my cals are regularly around the 2000 mark, so in no way low.

frumpet · 05/10/2012 09:59

Also i weighed myself last Sunday evening , fully clothed . Should i do the same again ?

hurricanewyn · 05/10/2012 10:02

frumpet - decaf coffee? I've moved to that & have it black but can't taste any difference.

ForSaletotheHighestBidder · 05/10/2012 10:05

frumpet, you can drink coffee.. Or could you use the cutting down on the fizzy stuff to help you cut down on the cigarettes?

frumpet · 05/10/2012 10:06

Dont know if anyone has seen it but there is a nice recipe in last weeks MOS , crispy pancetta , spinach and ricotta bake , cant see any carbs in it .

ForSaletotheHighestBidder · 05/10/2012 10:08

Frumpet, I always weigh in the morning after wee/poo and naked, just before I jump in the shower.

frumpet · 05/10/2012 10:08

I think i have to admit to yet another addiction , caffeine ! The problem is i drink it with skimmed milk , tried put cream in it , but bleurgh ! cant even enjoy semi skimmed in coffee anymore . Might switch allegiance and try black tea for a while

frumpet · 05/10/2012 10:09

Forsale , not sure my friend would aprreciate me doing that ! i dont have any scales of my own you see Grin

BigStickBIWI · 05/10/2012 10:11

frumpet - no! You will be weighing your clothes as well as all the food/drink you have consumed that day! Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, naked and after you've been to the loo

Can you drink black coffee? Or coffee with cream? Both would be better than loads of coffees with milk or Coke.

MmeLindor - that looks very OK. We're aiming to get most of our carbs from veg/salad, but obviously some other products will have some carbs. 1g per 100g is very low

Cake - obviously Splenda is better than sugar from the POV of carbs, but it is artificial - just keep the quantity as low as you can.

dotty2 - it's always difficult when something like this is so new/counter-intuitive. Hopefully when people get on the scales on Monday the results will be sufficient to keep them on track!

FatOnTheInside · 05/10/2012 10:12

Hi and well done everyone, keep up the good work!
Does anyone know how I could make cauliflower rice without a food processor? I have a blender and a Kitchenaid foodmixer but no processor. Thanks x

ForSaletotheHighestBidder · 05/10/2012 10:14

BIWI, apologies but can you link again to the list of the carbs in various veggies please?
Thanks.

hurricanewyn · 05/10/2012 10:16

I made cauliflower rice first time with a cheese grater - time consuming though!

BigStickBIWI · 05/10/2012 10:18

You can make cauliflower rice by using a box grater, I think. I've never made it but have seen others talk about it.

If you look at the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet, the carb counts are there

frumpet · 05/10/2012 10:20

BIWI , but if i get weighed in the morning naked then i will be cheating , no ? because i got weighed in clothes at the heaviest time of the day last week . TBH i have got sooooooo much weight to lose , i am not sure that it will make that much difference in the beginning .
Will look at reducing my caffeine consumpstion this week , then really boot camp properly from next monday . Still feel quite proud of my lack of wine , bread , potatoes etc this week though .
Will be having wine tonight , but am taking my own food to party .

MmeLindor · 05/10/2012 10:21

Oh, braw. The 'nuernberger' bratwurst are normally available in Lidl and Aldi in UK, so if anyone wants to check them out here. Just make sure you don't get the light version, and check the carbs - but I assume they will be similar here.

Cake
Think that the Germans are very against putting other stuff into their sausages, so I should be good there.

They are also keen on things like pork belly and other fatty cuts of meat. In fact low carb should be reasonably easy cause they are big meat eaters. Will just have to avoid the cakes and klöse.

We will be spending a few days with my PILs though, so will have to think of a way to get around that. I am hoping that by the time we get there (another week) I will have lost enough weight for them to notice, and they will therefore be supportive. They were pretty good when I was doing weightwatchers.

MmeLindor · 05/10/2012 10:22

Surely it doesn't matter what time you weigh, or what you are wearing as long as you are consistent - so you can't weigh yourself fully clothed in evening first weigh in then naked in morning at second weigh in.

frumpet · 05/10/2012 10:28

Thats exactly what i was struggling to say MmeLindor!

NewStartSameStory · 05/10/2012 10:31

Morning.

I know there has been a lot of discussion about exercise and taking it easier on this thread. I haven't been able to and have found at the moment this:

  1. Quality speed and power work vs quantity, with increase in core strength is best
  2. I need almost double the amount of water during training
  3. Not needing to refuel in training so much (no sugar high low issues)
  4. Not feeling shakey after training. Blooming hungry so just off for second breakfast.
  5. I ache more and require more stretching out pre and post training atm.

Breakfast at stupid o'clock: 2 eggs scrambled with alpro cream
snack: alpro yoghurt
2nd breakfast will be bacon, mounge tout and eggs (fancy scrambled eggs) cooked in butter and with alpro cream.

Am feeling more emotionally balanced now. Still short tempered but I suspect that is sleep related - speaking of which a whole 5hrs last night. Grin

This is working. I even walked past all the high carbs. Smell of fresh baked goods did not lure me in.

NewStartSameStory · 05/10/2012 10:34

Should have read *mangetout peas

BigStickBIWI · 05/10/2012 11:04

Well, unless you are weighing yourself wearing exactly the same clothes each time, having eaten/drunk exactly the same things, then it's not really consistent! I get your point, frumpet, and in your case it's probably best not to rip your clothes off to weigh!

I suppose the other thing to say is that the scales are never really that accurate (even if they purport to be, by giving your weight with 1/4lb units!). The best measurement of your weight is actually your shape. And the fit of your clothes is actually the best way to tell you how much weight you've lost. Find something that you really like and want to fit into, and try it on each week. Then you'll know how you're really progressing.

LittleFrieda · 05/10/2012 11:21

frumpet "The issue is that i smoke , but i cannot smoke cigarettes on thier own , i have to have a drink with them , water simply wont do , coffee and diet coke have always been my chosen poison to go with my poison ! So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated ."

Sounds like the beautiful Max Mara skirt I used to have. It was stunning but it didn't go with anything. I gave it away in the end. Could you give up smoking? Grin

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 05/10/2012 11:29

Ok after being so proud of myself for avoiding all the goodies last night and just having sparkling water, (I estimate I drank 4.5 litres of tap/sparkling yesterday!! Omg!! )

I have woken up today feeling utterly, utterly flat with absolutely no energy at all. Crawled back from the school run feeling like I could lie down and sleep for days. Wondering if it was cos yesterday was a protein day and I didn't manage any veg/salad.

I am craving hot buttered toast with marmalade and a latte.
I am HAVING organic mushrooms, leeks and a green pepper fried in butter with a 2 egg omelette, a vit c tablet and a black coffee. Have drunk a litre of water already.

Still no poo@ day 5. If I don't poo soon, does this mean my body is just not suited to low carb? I really want this to work for me!!

Someone please tell me, in the words of MN, that this too shall pass!!!!

vnmum · 05/10/2012 11:32

Mme where abouts in germany are you going? The bratties are good for low carb but it was the delicious cakes, pastries, raisin bread and kartoffeln houses that were my undoing when I lived there. Lovely country though.

I am having a bit of a stressy morning. And it is probably over something small to most people.
I have applied for a job. It is full time and if I get it, it will mean that I won't be able to pick the DC up from school at all (this made me nearly cry in the car on way home from school run this morning). Some days I will be working till 6 or 7. The DC will have to go to child care of some sort until DH gets in from work. There may also be 1 or 2 nights involved.
This is all fine while DH is here but I don't know how I will manage when he goes away for 6 months in a years time (thats when he is next due to go after missing this time).

I am worried how the DC will cope as I have always been there for them (SAHM) and not sure how I will cope with the change either. I worry incase it will affect their school work (at the moment I do their reading with them every night after school, obviously this won't get done if I am working as they will be in after school club then too tired to do it later), I worry that they will feel pushed away (crying while typing this Sad).

I have not worked for 8 years and we really need an extra wage coming in so we can start saving for the future (house etc) and so the pressure is not all on DH to bring in the money.

DH says it will be fine and the DC will adapt and won't love me any less but I just worry I am letting them down by not being home for them like I have been these past years and I don't want them to feel they are being passed from pillar to post while I am working.

Covering the nights while DH is away will be a whole different problem Sad

sorry, I know it is completely off topic but I see alot of you on here as friends I can share things with

LittleFrieda · 05/10/2012 11:34

frumpet - I used to smoke too, so that was very tongue in cheek. Sorry.
