Hmm. Has pilates ever helped anyone here to lose weight?

I did fairly well with weight loss from December until around May/June, lost around 1.5st - initially with WW, then using Myfitnessapp. However, went on holiday at the end of June and things have been sliding. Back onto Myfitnesspal, and I have downloaded a hypnotherapy app I'd seen recommended here so I'm going to try that tonight.

My real downfall is exercise. I have an elliptical trainer which gets used around once a week. Had been doing Zumba on Wii & WiiFit as well - mainly the stepping exercises while watching the TV. However, I've started seeing a physio as I've had ongoing joint problems for 7+ years. She's said I've not to do anything which could damage knees further - i.e. Zumba, stepping, running, Shredding. She said she would not encourage me to do yoga (I have hypermobility and it's too easy to stretch too far and dislocate something) but that I should do pilates.

I had a really old pilates DVD so have whipped it out the last couple of nights. Can manage it alright, but I'm not sure if it actually helps with weightloss, i.e. cardio? I can see that it would be toning but not sure how many calories it's really burning IYSWIM.

Has anyone used pilates as part of a weight loss plan?

Will be hanging around lots - getting married in 2 years, want to start looking for the dress next year and would love to lose at least 2st!

TIA :)

Doesn't burn many calories, but, as you've said, is excellent for toning. I've done cardio and pilates with excellent results in the past... just need to do it again!! Grin

I would not expect to see weight loss. How about swimming, aqua aerobics, cycling, walking etc.
Good luck!

I've got pretty severe hypermobility syndrome and do pilates - never lost weight using it but boy does it help with keeping me stuck together. It helps with the pain too which means I can now do aqua aerobics and swimming which has helped me loose weight. Honestly I'd do the pilates regardless of weightloss if I were you it'll keep you fitter for longer - if I'd done less running/walking/biking and more pilates I'd have lasted longer
