Mirena coil halting weight loss?

I had it fitted 4 months ago and my weight shot up by 10 lbs. So, initially I put it down to not being very careful with my portion sizes etc.

Two months ago I decided to get serious and shift the weight. Having always been v successful in the past, I am shocked that two months on, I have only lost 3 lbs.

Doing what I have been doing would easily have resulted in me losing a stone.

I am eating 1200 calories per day and exercising (running) three times per week. On top of running around after four kids.

I tried to the low carb thing (I normally lose 5 lbs in the first week) and didn't lose a single lb

I'm currently 1 stone heavier than I'd like to be and it's causing me joint pain. I'm v hypermobile and any weight gain causes me problems.

So, does it sound like the Mirena is the cause of my lack of loss?!

nope, if you successfully took the pill in the past then the coil is the same. Why are you blaming the coil could be plenty of reasons such as your low consuption of calories - You must be staving! your body is going into "stavation mode" hence reasons and you will not lose weight by doing this. Continue this low calorie diet and your body will store more fat. I would review your diet and consume slow carbs (whole wheat, high fibre etc).

10Ibs in 4 months is a lot of weight - could be various reasons. Spoke to my GP (specialises in the fitting of coils) about this and there is no evidence with weight gain.

I know several women how have had this coil fitted, and each has gained weight. Same with the depo injection, which i had for a while, but stopped when i put weight on.

How tall are you? 1200 calories isn't enough really, and as bacon said, your body will try and hold on to any fat that you do eat. Protein, good fats, and slow carbs such as lentils and beans are good. Also, try and cut out sugar from your diet. It can be hard, there is sugar in everything these days. People also forget that lactose in diary products are sugar, so try not to eat/drink too much milk and yoghurts and things.

The Mirena website itself lists weight gain in 1 in 10 women though!

I was aware of the weight gain risk but not the being unable to lose the weight bit!

I'm 5' 7" and am currently 11 stone 2 lbs. I'm using MyFitnessPal which has calculated the 1200 calories. I'm wondering whether to switch to Weightwatchers again.

Nope. I had a mirena fitted a year ago. Have lost over three stone. And i have pcos. And don't exercise. It's all through low carb.

Cant say I noticed a weight gain or a problem loosing weight, I agree with the others that you might benefit from upping your calories you must be pretty busy with 4 little peeps to run around after and the exercising, even Weight Watchers would encourage you to use your Exercise Points. I lost a stone on WW without even exercising a few months back but got lazy and stopped, put a bunch of it back on so have gone back to basics, eat small amounts often, eat healthy non processed and move more... four pounds off in two weeks so far and feel better (loving the virtual gastric band hypnosis app!!!)

I was trying to lose baby weight when I had my mirena fitted. My weight loss stalled for a few weeks (despite still being on the same diet which I'd been losing weight on) but then started losing again about 3 weeks later. I presume if I hadn't been dieting, I would have gained weight in this time, but instead it just made me plateau. Ive had no other problems losing weight with it since Smile

Thanks guys, I'll up my calories and down the carbs a bit in the hope it'll kick start things Smile

How are you getting on now?
I don't care what anyone says, mirena definitely makes some people gain weight or be unable to lose it. I have been eating 1200 calories a day (also my fitness pal) for a week plus exercise and didn't lose a single pound. I upped my calories slightly and gained 1lb...
I know what food to eat/not eat and have never had a problems with weight until mirena was fitted 6 weeks ago.

There's a very informative site with lots of information on how to lose weight and get rid of the mirena iud side effects and find other natural birth control options. Check out: mirenadetox.com/mirena-weight-gain/ Her detox has also been immensely helpful to my recovery and I seriously recommend it
