Hi I am considering chnaging to a vegan diet for ethical reasons. However I need to lose weight, at least 2 stone. Will simply turning vegan be ebough or do I still need to watch what I eat? Thanks for anyone with advice

I went vegan for 4 months last year and didn't lose any weight-I think this is very unusual though and I did a lot of vegan baking Grin

Hmm. I am a vegan and am about 3 stone over weight since my last baby a year ago.

Unfortunately chips, noodles and dark chocolate are not made from animals.

I'm vegetarian and overweight. However, when I was vegan for a while the weight fell off me.
Might try it again myself actually, it makes sense ethically too.

i would have thought it would help immensely. i lost a lot when i was properly vegan (though was breastfeeding at the time as well)

you need to be careful with your diet from other perspectives though. i found I was ravenously hungry to start with, and like seventheverything I was eating a lot of carbs.
Once I'd got my protein sorted out I was fine though. I was getting through a big jar of peanut butter a week and still losing weight!

hav e to say, i felt better on a proper vegan diet that I had done for years and years

I have lost weight since cutting back on carbs and eating more protein - I eat a lot of meat / fish / eggs etc. I am not sure that eating vegan would help with weight loss as would be easy to eat to many carbs.

I was vegan for about 4 years, and initially very easily lost weight on it. i had about a stone to lose, and went under that without too many problems. But I was eating very fresh food, little oil, very little carbs and only brown rice. Then my diet shifted towards alot of vegan stews and curries and nuts and I upped my wine intake and I put on weight again. Then when I moved to the UK I was astounded at how many good, tasty vegan fruit bars/brownies etc there were and went wild for a time- again it had a bad effect on my weight! So, I think you can lose weight if you are eating very pure whole foods, but like someone up thread said- chips and onion rings and all that will not help!
