I want to tone as well as burn calories and although I have bought every DVD known to man I never keep them up. The only thing I am completely dedicated to is walking my dog. I have miles and miles of fantastic terrain and I usually do 3 miles a day, more recently I have upped that to 4 or 4.5 miles and I try and stay at about 3.5 miles an hour -would love to get to 4 miles an hour but walking on sand and hills slow me down. So I am thinking I have that hour or hour and twenty mins what else can I do whilst I walk - should I try running? Will that tone more than walking? Should I put weights on ankles and wrists? Jury seems to be out on this.....should I stop every mile and do some lunges etc or leave them to the end? And how many should i aim for? Any idea of heart rate I should be looking at for optimum fat burning? Any ideas or plans extremely welcome as although I have been doing three miles a day since August I don't see much difference in tone.

I've been advised to do my walking as interval style trainIng, so walking at my usual pace for 2 minutes or so and then upping the pace for a minute. I'm not running, just walking as fast as I can. Apparently this is really good for burning fat. Could also try arm/leg weights.

Add little runs interval style, gradually making intervals longer!

Forget the weights on ankles and do lunges etc at home.
