I have lost 4.5 stone so far, but have quite a long way to go yet. However I have never been slim, so have no idea what a healthy weight for me might be, but would like a target to aim for.

I am 5 foot 8, size 7 feet and big hands- so not petite.

Any thoughts? Thanks :)

Hi try the BMI tool on the NHS website. It will tell you where you are now (input height and weight) and you can work out where you should be.

Well done so far!

foreverondiet · 15/03/2012 23:10

11 stone?

BettyBathroom · 15/03/2012 23:13

Depends how slim you want to be - at a BMI of 24 I feel very chubby, at a BMI of 22 I start to feel good in clothes but I still do not feel skinny in a swimsuit for eg.

winnybella · 15/03/2012 23:16

I'm 5'8" and I feel good at about 53-54 kilos, but I have quite small bones.I would think anything up to 65 kilos would be healthy.

BettyBathroom · 15/03/2012 23:39

Healthy BMI is between 18.5 till 25. Which means someone of 5ft 8 will be anywhere between 55.5 to as much as 74.5 to be considered medically to be a healthy weight .

Congratulations on weight loss - you are doing very very well :) My friend is 5' 8 and she looks great at about 9.5 stone.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 16/03/2012 07:38

... but she does have quite a small frame so you might look equally good much heavier.

I have other friends who are the same height (as each other, but not you) - they are 2 stone different in weight, but look the same - it is really, very very odd Grin

ZZMum · 16/03/2012 11:21

I am 5'8" and am a couple of stone overweight - never been a standard slim size - at 12.5 stone I am now slipping into 14 - am very pear shaped so all my fat is on ass and thighs - very slim top.

I just joined gym and had some stats done - to get my body fat to a healthy percentage which is my goal, I need to weigh about 65kg which is about 10 stone 4 - so this is where i am headed for .. that is about 20% weight loss which I am judging to be about right for me .. but as ever this depends on your build

BrummieSeagull · 16/03/2012 11:32

I'm 5'8 - all the online calculators seem to say 10st3 is ideal. To be honest, I'd be pretty skinny at that weight, so aiming for 10st7.

debka · 16/03/2012 13:07

Thanks everyone! As I said, I have a fair way to go yet, but I'd like to have an idea of how many stones still to go. I cannot imagine weighing in the 10 stone bracket, but hey, why not!

I think at 5 8 with big frame (ie size 7 feet) then 9.5 stone would look v skinny and be difficult to maintain.

So because of the big frame and history of being overweight I think best to set your target as a BMI of 25 (ie 11 stone 12 pounds, or maybe 11 7) and when you get there plan on maintaining for 6-12 months before you decide whether you want to go lower.

debka · 18/03/2012 20:18

forever that seems like sound advice. I like the idea of giving it a while and seeing how it feels. I was running tonight and realised that I have lost 4.5 stone quite easily and enjoyably Shock and there is actually no reason why I shouldn't reach my target and be slim. Quite a revelation.
