Sorry work is still not good TLP. Well done to your ds on getting a good school report. My two won't get theirs for another week, as they have a week and a half of school left to go.

Ds2's physio appointment has come through and it's at a contracted out clinic at Boots. Hmm Was hoping to talk through the whole EDS dx issue with them, but wondering if there is any point now. Might book an appointment with the GP and go over it with them instead. He is really struggling and in a lot of pain most days, so I can't just leave things as they are. Lax ligaments is not a dx - its a blooming symptom fgs! Hmm

OP posts:
TheLightPassenger · 14/07/2012 11:13

contracted out to Boots Shock but sadly not surprised these days. Hope you get somewhere re:EDS etc with someone. Tho a mare I know feeling you have to keep on top of the professionals when knowing medical stuff is theoretically their job, not yours!

moosemama · 14/07/2012 12:13

It's don't think it's actually Boots that have the contract, I think they just lease the consulting rooms. He used to be seen there for his orthoptist appointments as well - not at Boots opticians, but in there leased consulting rooms instead of the NHS eye clinic.

Oddly, we have just received exactly the same letter again from his paediatrician as the one we had a week ago. Confused Kind of thinking it might be a kick up the bum reminder from the universe to get it all sorted out.

OP posts:
moosemama · 18/07/2012 12:29

Just bumping the thread, as it was about to disappear off my threads.

Diet is atrocious, so no point in even attempting to discuss it. Still hoping to kickstart it when we go on holiday.

Good day with ds1 yesterday, he got through the school talent show auditions reciting a Spike Milligan poem. He has practised really hard, but I was still surprised his year group voted for a poem rather than a dance act or something. Ds2 and his little gang didn't get through with their rather uncoordinated light-sabre battle - no surprise there - well not for anyone other than ds2 and his gang, apparently. He was in a foul mood about it yesterday and so Envy of his big brother's achievement. Grin

Ds1 also finally moved up a level on the times table league. He has been doing the same league test over and over since the middle of year 4, but could never complete enough questions to meet the pass mark, despite getting all the ones he did complete right.

He was so proud of his achievements, lovely big smiley faces in his feelings diary. Smile

Didn't last of course, as we had to put together the end of year gift and card for his outreach teacher last night and that set off all the transition tears and upset again. Sad

I have ds2 home with a stinking cold and cough, which he has very generously shared with dd. Hmm She has it much worse than him unfortunately, so it's snot city around here today and one very hot, croaky little girl snuggling up to me on the sofa while I work on backing up my amendments for the statement.

Roll on next Wednesday afternoon - I am soooo sick of end of year activities and overtired, stressed anxious children.

Hi all

Very busy time for everyone I know, thought I'd pop round and share my news.

Diet stuff still going well, am pretty much constant at 91/2 stone and a size 10, eat the primal/Paleo way all the time now and don't feel the need to kill myself with exercise anymore!

We have dx of PDA for ds2 which is the most incredible part of the year for me. I actually felt breathless when they told me. All this time! Finally! I'm not making it up!! This opens up options now of maybe sending him to a Special School nearby which is meant to be really good. Would love for him to stay in mainstream but part-time (9-12) is just driving me nuts. I have no life and no hope of ever getting one right now.

MA starts in September so whatever happens I'll have that, my little oasis Smile

Came looking for you a few days ago so glad you bumped Moose.

Hope you are all doing well x

moosemama · 31/07/2012 16:52

Hello Lambskin, lovely to hear from you. Smile

So pleased you have got a dx for ds2 as well and that you can finally get the right support for him school-wise.

Very exciting starting your MA as well. Sounds like things are going really well. Smile

Diet wise you are amazing, I am slowly putting back on all the weight I lost having gone into relapse with my ME/MS/whatever the hell the neuro wants to think it is this month. Haven't done any exercise at all since April and have sunk into the most atrocious eating habits through stress and frustration.

I have just dropped off instructions for the LEA to finalise ds's statement though and we're off on holiday soon, so I'm hoping I'll be able to destress and get my eating back on track then.

Ds2 has to do daily circuit training now due to his joint problems, so I am going to start working out gently with him every day and hope to build it up from there. I dream of getting back up to shredding, but fear it will take some time to reach that point.

Dd is starting nursery in September Sad so I will have a couple of hours peace a day. Hoping all this will add up to some recovery time for me so I can get healthy and back on track with everything really, not just diet and exercise, housework, life etc. Grin

madwomanintheattic · 31/07/2012 17:09

Everything fine here, but have had almighty tinternet ishoos and rushed off my feet, plus guests, so when I've got time, I can't the the Internet to work...

I did manage to catch up the other day and read the LEA have agreed to finalize statement as you wanted (yay!) but then lost connection when I posted, so am hoping this will work!

Will be back to catch up later if it's still on. Cable guy came and did lots of techy stuff - hopefully it's fixed!

Hope you are all having a calm-ish summer. Crazy here!

madwomanintheattic · 31/07/2012 17:11

Oh it worked!

And sil arrives on Sunday with her weightless regime. She has lost 61 pounds now since January!!

moosemama · 31/07/2012 17:35

Oo another long-time-no-see. Hello madwoman! Grin

Things sound manic your end as usual. Internet issues are such a pita. I hate not being able to mn communicate with the outside world.

You HAVE to share the weightless regime with us you know that don't you? I am in desperate need of a dieting kick up the backside here. Blush

Statement is by no means perfect, but a lot better than the first iteration. There was no way we were going to get them to properly specify and quantify without a huge fight and £££s in independent assessments, but have managed to come up with something pretty tight that should work for his last year at primary. Still hoping to have an independent SALT assessment before AR to try and leverage some more specificity before secondary looms. All depends if we are eligible for some financial support to get the assessment done though.

Ds2 has finally had his physio assessment and is currently on weekly physio appointments, which up to this point have been pretty useless. Yesterday we were been given a 12 exercise circuit for him to do daily, but its all outside stuff, so obviously it had to start throwing it down with rain today. Hmm She has said that modified versions of some of the shred exercises would be good for him though, so am thinking we might have to substitute that on wet days.

Physio spoke to their departmental 'expert' on joint hypermobility, both agree that the 'lax ligaments' dx is useless and a non-dx, but said it would be a huge fight to get him properly dx with BHJS/EDS. To be honest it sounds like they know naff all about hypermobility and/or EDS and so far I am not at all impressed. Basically she said we need to get him to do more sport and get fit. Er, yes, but how do we do that when he sub-luxes after just getting out of a chair and is in pain within minutes of starting exercise? Angry

Ds1 is going through the usual start of holiday behaviour issues. Am looking forward to our holiday in Ireland, as he always chills out once we get there. He's a different child there actually, mainly I suppose, because the whole holiday is organised around him. Still, it gives dh and I a break from the constant stress we get at home.

OP posts:
madwomanintheattic · 31/07/2012 22:50

Lamb, a dx! I remember when they finally dx dd2, I was literally overjoyed. It meant I wasn't delusional and was just such a weight off my shoulders. I grinned like a maniac for days. I remember a really bizarre conversation with the slt (who was lovely, and had of course known for 18 mos, but protocols dictated no discussion until consultant officially dx) where I essentially bowled in over the moon, gushing that dd2 had been dxed with cp. like we had won a million pounds. Grin v odd. Dd2 was of course no different, and I had worked out well over a year before that would be the eventual conclusion, but just felt so bizarrely relieved that it was official. What's your MA? I can't remember if I know...

Hols have been roller coaster here, don't think I've stopped, and have a list a mile long. Ds has been dry at night for three nights in a row. I can barely type it, just in case. They all have dance camp this week.

Moose, I think sil's secret is being single with no kids. Grin a bit impractical for the likes of us, but I'm dying to know how she's done it!

Lambskin · 01/08/2012 12:43

Yes I'm a bit Shock at 61 pounds! What was she before? Having no kids certainly helps, no crisps in the cupboards, no cakes to be made andtastetested, no 'let's have a takeaway and a bottle of wine' - oh no hang on, that last one was me Grin

I never thought I could be so happy at being told my child has an ASD. Like you say madwoman, it was always there, we knew it, he knew it, the school knew it, but nobody could say it out loud. Hurrah! Now we can!

MA is English Literature. I can't wait Grin

Is there a reason why you're having to do the statement and not the school moose? You've probably told me but I have a brain a bit like a tea bag. Hope it works out anyway, it's taken up a lot of time and effort that you can I'll afford. And poor ds2, if they don't know how to help him can't they find someone who can?

Lambskin · 01/08/2012 12:44

Well that strike through worked.

moosemama · 01/08/2012 14:11

School refused to apply for a statement and told me we wouldn't get one Lamb. Same old story.

Once I made it clear that I was going to apply anyway they said they would support the application, but then almost as soon as I told them he was being issued with a statement the trouble started. They tried to tell us that he had made a miraculous recovery in two months and no longer needed any of the things they'd put in their assessment report. Hmm Angry They also said that if we specified and quantified to the extent we wanted they would refuse to keep him at the school as they couldn't meet his needs (despite me only specifying and quantifying what they were already supplying him with during last year Confused).

As for ds2, it's par for the course with hypermobility syndrome unfortunately. Not enough specialists, extremely poor understanding of it in the wider NHS, very few places that can or will diagnose and it's pretty much a given that you need to pay privately to see Prof Graham if you want a proper dx. Same problem with physio all across the country as well, no expertise in hypermobility but a refusal to admit it, resulting in poor or inappropriate exercise plans. Even GOSH are refusing to dx and there are some really horrible stories about their so-called rehab programmes on the EDS forums. Sad

I think at this point I'm just going to do as much research as I can and build up his fitness myself. If he continues to be in chronic pain after his fitness levels have significantly improved we will have to scrape together the money to go private for a proper assessment and dx.

On the plus side, as a result of ds needing to get fit I have done a mini workout today for the first time in months. Did his circuit with him then a kickboxing circuit of BFBM. I am seriously embarrassed by how knackered I was afterwards. Blush Ds on the other hand has a long way to go. He can't hold a position long enough to do the exercises and trying to teach him form is an uphill struggle. I think this is going to be a very long road - which to be fair is the only thing the physio said that I agreed with! Grin

OP posts:
Lambskin · 01/08/2012 16:51

This again makes me realise how lucky we are with ds2's school.

I'm sure you'll do an amazing job for your ds2 anyway, you know what he's going through. Not that you should have to mind.

Well done with the BFBM! Do be careful not to over do it though. Since going full on Primal I've learnt that it's better for you to go easy on the workouts - walking for long periods mixed with quick bursts of sprinting and lifting weights is better and gets you better results. And much less often than you'd think. Oh happy day Smile finally a workout regime for lazy people.

Off to my mum's for a few days tomorrow so I'll disappear again now but hopefully not for quite as long as last time.

When are you off to Ireland btw Envy. Have never been and would absolutely love to.

madwomanintheattic · 01/08/2012 16:58

Oo, eng lit. OU? Or a local uni? I was trying to do it when dd2 was small, and then ended up getting called up by the military for ft operational support, so it all went to rats. How exciting.

Moose, at least with ds you can both take it slowly together - that way you won't be tempted to charge back at it and relapse further... Well done on first steps again though. And kudos for maintaining weight! I'm somehow managing to maintain without boot camp over the summer too, but am deffo flabbier. Jeans still fine though Wink. Can't wait for sil to get here and inspire me!

I have no idea what she weighed before - fairly closely guarded secret, but she was pretty big. I'm sure it will come out next week, with target weight and whatnot. She's always been big in the twenty odd years I've known her, and suffered a lot with all sorts of health issues, inc MH, so this is (no pun intended) huge for her in every sense. I think us being over here was the final straw really - because it is so outdoorsy, when visitors come, the obvious thing to do is to get out and hike, or ski, or just be outdoors, because it's so beautiful. Last summer she really struggled, and she came over at Christmas, but didn't ski (70 yo mil still skis), and I think she just went home and said 'enough', as she wanted to be able to get outside and do stuff with the kids (she adores ds1 especially, and i suppose the fact that she couldn't even keep up with the 8yo with cerebral palsy was a wake-up call). I know she's had a personal trainer, but I don't know what food/ exercise plan she's been on. Whatever it is, it's working! And she's so chuffed.

TheLightPassenger · 01/08/2012 17:53

is primal all steak and berries, unprocessed caveman stylee Grin

lovely to "see" you all again

Lambskin - well done on maintaining such a good weight. Glad to hear the DX is giving your more power with sorting schools.

Moose - sorry to hear about your DS's problems, and lack of any decent NHS support. Well done for getting started on exercise for the both of you.

Madwoman - sounds v exciting, you having your personal weight loss guru coming to visit Wink

madwomanintheattic · 01/08/2012 19:29

I just googled primal. Grin

It looks v interesting. Similar to a lot of the low carb free stuff. V holistic. Grin and has lots of pics of fit blokes on the website

If sil doesn't work, I'm subscribing. Grin

Lambskin · 06/08/2012 14:00

We were disappearing again then!

Hello again TLP!

Yes, Primal is very much caveman styley eating. So no grains at all or sugar. After doing Anna Richardson and losing so much in one go, and feeling good while doing it, it was just a small step to do this. I'd already been flirting with the Paeleo, and this is basically the same thing. I subscribe to Mark Sissons Daily Apple, and it's all about doing what we were built for with regards to diet and exercise. I love it, it's surprisingly easy to do and actually makes a lot of sense.

www.marksdailyapple.com

The fit men do help 'tis true Grin

TheLightPassenger · 07/08/2012 10:25

Been checking out that Mark guy, Lamb, what he says makes a barrel load of sense. I'm too cheap and lazy to outlaw grains but he is probably right in his approach, darn it!

I've plateuaed at 12 stone 3, but I've not been exercising enough - half laziness, half time/back issues. Today I'm off work, so no excuses, need to aim for an hour exercise, split through the day.

moosemama · 22/08/2012 15:33

Hi all, back from my hols and twice the size I was. Blush

Managed to badly sprain my ankle on the beach (fell down a hole [blush) a couple of days into the holiday and spent the rest of it either hopping around trying to be cheerful or lying around stuffing my face with bad food choices.

Ds2 managed to get in a fair bit of exercise on the beach, but nothing structured without me doing it with him (dh less than no help Hmm) so am expecting a telling off at his physio appointment next week.

Holiday itself was, erm tough going and lets just say I'm glad to be home.

I have a plan to start doing intermittent fasting starting next Monday. It's where you do one day eating super healthily, but your full calorie intake, then the next day only a quarter of your calorie allowance. There's a fair bit of research behind it being really effective and a healthy way of living.

Some info here

I haven't watched that Horizon programme yet. In fact I only came across it when I googled today, as I'd read quite a bit about intermittent fasting online before I went away. Think I might see if I can get it on iplayer this afternoon, seeing as I have to sit with my big fat foot up anyway. (17 hour drive home without being able to sit with my foot raised has had an interesting effect.) There's stacks of stuff online about it, very popular with weight trainers and body builders and lots of different approaches, but I am going with the version that's been medically/scientifically researched.

Am a bit - well very = Hmm and Angry that I can't start working out at the same time I start my new eating regime, but I suppose that will at least make me ease my way back into it and truth be told its going to take a week or so to get over the holiday! I am dreaming of reaching Christmas back where I was last year, fit and slim, rather than pudgy and wobbly as I am at the moment.

Statement is finalised, so that's one load of stress massively reduced. Just the usual tricky September/new school year stuff and dd starting nursery to contend with and then hopefully I can start to really focus on getting my health and weight back under-control.

Hope everyone else's summer is going ok - Madwoman, you have to come and share your sister's dieting secrets with us. Wink

hello ladies. still hovering betwen 12 st 2 and 12 st 4 as been phoning it in diet/exercise wise, been stressed out at work and otherwise. Sorry to hear about your injury moose, what a pain. Glad the statement has been sorted.

This fasting lark sounds too much like effort to me,
