Low Carb

serotoninbutterfly · 13/02/2012 11:21

Im trying desperately to lose weight. Am exercising 3/4 times a week, and only consuming 1200 calories a day.

Nothing's happening Sad

So I think I might be eating too many 'bad' calories iyswim.

No idea how to low carb - potatoes/pasta/rice/bread are a vital part of all my meals (prob part of the problem!)

So, what on earth do I have to eat? I'm also skint so budget ideas would be awesome.

Thank you :)

Eggs
Meat
Fish
Salad
Green veg
Bacon
Cheese
More eggs....

It's hard, but does start to work if you cut down the carbs. Go for brown pasta, rice, bread ... And cut the portions

I do really love eggs Grin so that but is easy. Bacon? Really?

So brown rice has less carbs than white?

Thank you Grin I honestly have no idea what I m doing Sad

I am a week into Primal Eating, and I love it. I feel better, have lost 5 pounds (and like you, I wasn't shifting anything!) and have eaten more butter than I know what to do with! I'm in love!

check out the Mark's Daily Apple website for tips!

Try making protein & veg vital part of each meal and add a little carbs if lots of exercise.

Brown rice has just as many carbs as white rice but contains more fibre and hence is lower GI.

Typical day for me - I will now low (but not no) carb for life:

Breakfast - 2 egg omelette, 100g yoghurt with 10g oatbran - all cheap, can buy 1kg fat free yoghurt for £1, I buy tesco value eggs.

Lunch - salad with tin of fish (tuna / mackeral / sardines or as a treated smoked salmon) flaked through and dressing from fat free fromage frais. Or pulse and veg soup with dried soya mince for extra protein. Again tinned fish and pulses v cheap - I made 2 weeks worth of soup and froze the second weeks worth.

Dinner - meat and veg, or quorn and veg, or fish and veg if I had the pulse soup for lunch. Might add a little brown rice if I've done lots of exercise. I find frozen veg cheap and easy. Turkey cheap and look around for other cheap protein eg prawns.

Also worth logging what you eat on myfitnesspal .....

Hi, can I join in. Can anyone point me in the direction of some kind of site that lists whether foods are low carb or not. I know the basics, avoid bread, pasta, rice but I'm not sure of which fruit and veg are ok. I had a quick look online but its too complex, i could do with something with a traffic light system if such thing exists!!!

Marking place on the thread, I'd love to know the same things. Have just ordered the idiot-proof diet and am reading everything low-carb I come across!

serotoninbutterfly · 13/02/2012 23:47

I already use myfitnesspal and I am shredding and doing 6 week 6 pack. Going to start couch to 5k tomorrow too...

Quit smoking 10 days ago, think that prob has a lot to do with it Sad

Ooo good luck on the couch to 5k, I am currently on week 6 (i never thought i would be able to say that!!) and so far I am def getting fitter but not really shifting any weight. As I'm starting now to properly run for big chunks I thought i had better start looking at what I eat.

serotoninbutterfly · 14/02/2012 09:32

How long is a couch to 5k session? I need to book it in on one of the few evenings a week I have spare Sad I work three or so evenings a week and both days on the weekend and have the family over for dinner once a week too, so can realistically only do it once a week. But with the quoting smoking it's the cardio I really struggle with - at the moment I can fit in either a shred or 6 week 6 pack (or both) while DS naps and that's it really. I literally don't have the time, and I can't do that every day either!!

I had 2 weetabix with Greek yoghurt and a banana for breakfast, and I have halved the amount of sugar I have in my tea for a good start, but I genuinely don't understand how to 'low carb' because I don't know what counts as low - ie looking at ready meals etc. think I might have a trip to the library today Grin

its about 25 mins to 30 mins mostly. There is a 5 min warm up walk and a 5mmin cool down walk and about 20 mins or running/walking. I really struggled with fitting the shred in in the day too so that fell by the wayside. I'm finding this much more successful as on my days I run dh knows I will be out and we plan so either the little ones are eating or have eaten and its just before bed or just after bed is the best time. Could you run to work maybe?
