Has anyone heard about the Intermittent Diet? I'm thinking of giving it a go

www.genesisuk.org/media-centre/articles/The%20Intermittent%20diet%20.html

It's not specifically for women who want to prevent breast cancer although who doesn't? The idea was to look at alternative ways of dieting to the standard calorie counting/Mediterranean diet as people find it hard and it's important for cancer prevention to keep your BMI in the heathly range.

I'm thinking of giving it a go as a part of my inevitable New Years loose weight resolution and it would be great to hear of anyone else who's done it or would like to give it a try.

My plan is to start a general 'good' diet tomorrow, throw out the booze and chocs and once the dc's are back to school at the end of the week start the intermittent diet.

I'm going to try today for VLC. I had small omlette and WW toast yday - then nothing but water (as was at shopping centre). But then had chinese at night - but only one main meal between dh and I - WAY less than usual. So am hoping not too bad.
I might fall off the wagon as I go to a client on Monday who is an outdoor activity company and they always have the BBQ on the go for full breakfasts!!
I find kettlebell workouts AMAZING for toning up. Super fast results and no impact on the joints.
I'm also wondering about adding coffee to the milk. You could end up having 2 pints of coffee! Surely that amount of caffeine would be bad??
Good luck for you all today.

ZogTheDestroyer · 09/01/2012 08:26

Weighed myself this morning (do it every day obsessively Blush but only take the Monday AM as a true reading) and I lost 4lb last week :o

VLC today, good thing really as kids back to school and wouldn't have had time to eat anyway!

[hungry]

Bluebirdpies · 09/01/2012 08:29

I've been lurking on this thread for a few days and today I'm joining in. Berries and yoghurt for breakfast, soup and 50g shredded chicken for lunch and vege stir fry tonight. Just going to add up the calories and will take myself up to 650 with milky coffee.

Feel quite excited about this. It feels straightforward.

Good luck to anyone else who is having a vlc day today.

Loveleopardprint · 09/01/2012 09:14

Expat you are hardcore! Makes me feel like a right bumbler!
Lost 5 pounds last week but think that is mostly due to lack of baileys and choc every night!
Low cal today. Sad

Loveleopardprint · 09/01/2012 10:23

What do we think about low cal cup a soup. Is that the same as a cup of bovril??

QuietOhSoQuiet · 09/01/2012 10:47

hope you don't mind me barging in here but this is the type of diet I need as in my life it would be achievable

I have to loose 1/2 a stone by 3rd feb as am going to an anniversary party and can't fit into any dresses and flatly refuse to buy anything new

today will be a good day for me to start as am full of cold so food tastes like cotton wool and dh is away on business for 3 weeks as of 9am this morning so no distractions from him

tough bit for me will be not having that glass of vino or 2 in the evening, just looked up the calorie content of it and was Shock never really considered it until now

Hey expat - I went to gym today to try to restart the C25K for 2349234 th time - I get so far each time and then fall off the metaphorical treadmill and stop - so today did a run which I guess would fit into the HIIT model - I tend to blast the runs and then really slow down to recover and then followed up with some weight training. Then decided to have an omlette at the gym - had a 3 egg one so I guess that would be 300 calories or so but it will fill me up until dinner - am making a very large bowl of miso with lots of shredded veg and a little chicken - that should get me through the day.. Am interested in the reasearch you are digging up - i do agreed there is a lot of evidence supporting this way of eating for both weight loss and general health - did you see the stuff about a VLCD for a couple of months in some cases curing a type of diabetes?

Great to see so many people joining in - look forward to hearing about success and any tips to stave off hunger on VLCD... my top one is fizzy water or pop..

goldieandthreebears · 09/01/2012 11:44

on VLC day here too. Had a muller light yoghurt and banana for breakfast and although a bit hungry now, still ok. Probably milk for lunch and then some mushrooms for dinner.
Managed 2 VLC consecutive days last week, but felt exhausted so I think I might do it on Mondays and Wednesdays. I was wondering whether adding a 3rd VLC day in a week would be a good idea?

ZZMum · 09/01/2012 11:47

I would be worried about a third day as that is almost 50% of the week on very low food intake - suspect I would not cope with it and so would fail .. I like the science behind the 2 days being enough and I am going with the experts for now as I find the weight loss is good and I can cope with it fitting well into my life..

Might be worth thinking of a little more protein for breakfast if you get hungry .. am so full of eggs I can not imagine eating for hours!

TracyK · 09/01/2012 11:53

No I don't think a 3rd day would do any good. It would put your body into starvation mode - which I guess the 2 days keeps you just at the edge of - but not quite.
Well I admit it - I am frigging starving!
Have had a milky coffee and a carrot so far. Will hold off to 12 then have my courgette soup.
Not sure what to have for dinner - don't think I could face cottage cheese - tis disgusting.
Do you think a tiny bit of chicken and salad would be ok?

ProfYaffle · 09/01/2012 12:01

First vlc day today. Quite surprised, I've only just got hungry. Have put some veggies in the oven to roast which I'm having with an omlette then chicken and veg soup for dinner tonight.

I planned a quiet day at home today but I'm thinking that may be a mistake. Being busy to take my mind off eating is probably the best strategy.

ZogTheDestroyer · 09/01/2012 12:20

Am very hungry now... I guess I cheated more last week than I thought I did Hmm I guesstimated the milk and veg portion sizes (and I've had far less coffee today than I did last week so suppose the appetite suppressant action of that is making a big difference... must put the kettle on)

ZZMum I do that with C5K as well, I manage the first few weeks fine but then they rack up the actual running and it loses its appeal somehow!
Am a bit Blush at the amount of work others are putting in, I should be doing more but I want to focus on the food issues which for me are the real problem, and my back is playing up [excuses]

I saw that research, very interesting as I have Type 2 diabetes in the family, it's the main reason I'm doing this (and the Genesis study had great results for insulin tolerance but it wasn't really focused on).

TracyK · 09/01/2012 12:31

Just had my soup with a teeny thin slice of french stick. On to my milky coffee. Am still a wee bit hungry though.
I don't know how you girls can do 2 days on the trot. At least if you have a day of normal in between - you can get your energy levels back up with some decent food. 2 days would kill me.
Thank god ds has hidden his huge jar of jelly sweets - I couldn't cheat if I wanted to!

ExpatAgain · 09/01/2012 12:37

me too, zog! could gnaw the leg of the table i'm sitting at, am also KNACKERED. Is this carb-crash/withdrawal, I wonder, also! Have just opened the doors to get some air in (summer here), heat normally helps but not with the tiredness!

zog have a read of Dr john's stuff about HITT exercising (but quite hard) for only 15-20mins (like ZZ did?), might be easier in some ways. I used to run loads, up to marathon length and train each week accordingly, joints too weak and seen my mum suffer genetic joint problems with age which i want to avoid. trying to do lower impact stuff and run only 1x a week. problem is running is so good for my head and is sociable, really miss that! As for putting work in, I shouldn't be focussing on this nearly as much as I should be studying but this more interesting than cleaning the loo which would be my other distraction..don't worry!

zzmum, you sound like you're covering all bases and am liking the idea of miso soup. JNot heard about the diet reversing diabetes, wow. Just had a homemade seafood w veg soupy thing, still hungry but telling myself I'm not. Another glass of fizzy water I think. Looking forward to tomorrow!

EBDteacher · 09/01/2012 13:16

Is this half way through Day 1 yet?? I'm not too hungry but I do feel a bit light headed probably not helped by the 10,000 coffees I've had . Grin

I'm home from work now though, so this is the hard bit!

Well done everyone else who has done half a day!

TracyK · 09/01/2012 13:20

My hard bit will be from 4pm till bed time. I'll have to get ds to butter his own lovely soft, delish warburtons bread......... I fear I may not resist.

ZogTheDestroyer · 09/01/2012 13:53

Nooo don't talk about bread! (I don't like soft bread that much, honest but just the word is making me salivate!)

Envy at it being summer where you are, expat, maybe that's why I can't stand the thought of running, cold and rainy here.

This is the VLC diet which had such good results in diabetes, quite incredible when you think about it. 600/cal/day for 6 weeks Shock sounds pretty hardcore but for a diabetic not to need tablets for the rest of their life or suffer diabetic complications, well worth it.
I'm (probably) pre-diabetic (not diagnosed, just going off family history and risk factors, sister was diagnosed at my age) so this diet might just be the one that makes a big difference to the next few years of my life.

Dh has just emailed this from work:

hi,
soooooooooooooooooo hungry
:(

Yeah, join the club love! (Obviously sent a more encouraging response than that though :o )

Bluebirdpies · 09/01/2012 13:56

I am rubbish. I'm struggling and it's only my first day. Just had my lunch and still peckish. I have a can of coke zero though so that should fill me up a bit.

Over christmas I was stuffing my face at every opportunity so I think my body's now in shock about not having toast, thorntons and sausages shovelled into it every half an hour!

OlympicEater · 09/01/2012 14:09

Zog that diabetic research is incredible.

I have started using some protein shakes and was going to do that for a couple of weeks to knock off the xmas excess but am finding it hard going. However 2 days per week sounds so much more do-able.

Well done everyone on their progress so far.

ZogTheDestroyer · 09/01/2012 14:12

Keep at it Blue! Caffeine is your friend here :o and tell yourself: it's only a day, it's only a day, etc

ZogTheDestroyer · 09/01/2012 14:13

OlympicEater love the username :o

ExpatAgain · 09/01/2012 14:24

zog, just think the nights are drawing in where I am and out in the UK, does that help?!

Diabetes v impressive. Bluebird, you're not rubbish, you're doing well to have stuck at it so far! nOt easy, esp as so low carb (which we or at least me are SO not used to) esp compared to most diets which focus more on low fat. It's a whole new way of life, I hope..I really don't think it's a quick fix, I think it requires commitment and dedication something showing alot on here!
Here's hoping it DOES get easier though..

OlympicEater · 09/01/2012 14:28

Thanks Zog I like to think, in Olympic year that it reflects the fact that everyone is good as something ... and this is my speciality Grin

ZogTheDestroyer · 09/01/2012 14:40

The low-carb side of it is what's hardest for me too. I've never managed to do anything more than reduce my carbs a pathetically tiny amount but I'm finding this a lot more bearable.

The thought that it's only 2 days and I don't have to join the cult of Atkins for the rest of my life and never eat again, I can have whatever I'm craving, just not right now.

Loveleopardprint · 09/01/2012 15:28

The best thing about vlc days is that I am realising how much I graze on rubbish all day. Been driving a lot today and normally I would think I need crisps or choc to keep me going! Also left my twelve yr old on a residential course for a week do would normally do an rmption eating thing. So even if this teaches me to look at all of the unnecessary eating it is a good thing! Wink
