Has anyone heard about the Intermittent Diet? I'm thinking of giving it a go

www.genesisuk.org/media-centre/articles/The%20Intermittent%20diet%20.html

It's not specifically for women who want to prevent breast cancer although who doesn't? The idea was to look at alternative ways of dieting to the standard calorie counting/Mediterranean diet as people find it hard and it's important for cancer prevention to keep your BMI in the heathly range.

I'm thinking of giving it a go as a part of my inevitable New Years loose weight resolution and it would be great to hear of anyone else who's done it or would like to give it a try.

My plan is to start a general 'good' diet tomorrow, throw out the booze and chocs and once the dc's are back to school at the end of the week start the intermittent diet.

First day.
So far I have had muller light yogurt for breakfast, two milky coffees, some sugar free squash, strawberry smoothie and veg soup. All goodWink
Also did an hours walk in the wind with a friend and her dog.
Naughty bit - had small bit of sour dough bread with soupSad
Aiming for veg stir fry tonight!
Disappointed I had bread but pleased with exercise and the rest. I was starving and shaking after the walk (excuses, excuses!) I did however control myself from sharing a bowl of chips! Been hard as I have been out all day. Going to do day at home tomorrow so should be easier to control!

love Get thee to the sin bin! Grin

I've had yoghurt and blueberries for breakfast (I found an old unopened packet of splenda in the cupboard so I used a spoon of that in it), milky coffee, butternut squash soup and pineapple for lunch and a sort of veg curry with cottage cheese on top for tea. I think I've probably eaten too much cottage cheese. I had a whole 250g tub over two days.... Oh and I had a dried cranberry - kill me now Wink

I'm actually not too hungry and although I have resented every mouthful of the cheesy pizza I fed my lo, I feel I can rise above it. Strangely, normally I get raging PMT sugar cravings and although I've been hungry I haven't actually wanted the carbs. Yay!

Next week I might weigh out a bunch of portions of things so I can just grab one and not worry about scarfing the whole tub. I'm also just about to purchase some 9 inch dinner plates.

Hopefully I can stay sensible tomorrow and do a bit of exercise. I weighed myself at the start yesterday and although through utter shame I'm not divulging that figure (I might after a few glasses of wine) I'll let you know if any comes off next week same time. (I'm a once a week girl!)

Loveleopardprint · 05/01/2012 19:49

Sitting on the naughty step now!Sad

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 05/01/2012 20:17

This sounds very interesting! What veg are you all putting in your soup? I'm very tempted to give this a try, I'm currently a slave to carbs and a bit of a detox will probably do a lot of good.

ZZMum · 05/01/2012 20:26

sitting right next to you LLP - 2 glasses of wine and some oat cakes and cheese later... but this is a normal day for me (sadly the normal that got me here!) OK excuse is I did finish the last of the xmas indulgences and so from tomorrow life is back to healthy

Break - I used a lot of med veg - courgettes, aubergines etc as I think they are lower carb - also brocolli and cauli soups suit milk ifyou go that route as you can believe it is cream :)

Loveleopardprint · 05/01/2012 20:38

Wine!!! I am now drinking bovril. Can't wait for normality on Saturday! Probably was not best to spend the first day with my size eight friend who can eat anything she likes!

We live and learn Smile

PrancingBuffalo · 05/01/2012 20:50

Glad to see you're all getting stuck in! I did my first low cal day yesterday, I was feeling pretty light headed at times. Back to work today (ugh), and I've been sensible, around 1500 cals today. I'm logging everything on Food Focus. Next week will be my first 'full' week with two low cal days. I've stocked up on miso soup paste in anticipation.

ZogTheDestroyer · 05/01/2012 21:24

I can see the flaw in a support thread for people who are intermittently starving and eating what they want Hmm The hungry get hungrier, the indulging ones feel guilty that they're rubbing the 'hungries' noses in it, so to speak.

Oh well.
I've done my 2 days this week and have just had a lovely meal at local Turkish restaurant :o
On the plus side, I chose what for me are very light options (small starter and veggie meze instead of mega-fat-bastard-athon) and wasn't tempted at all to have pudding, drank far less than usual and the rest of the day was a model of virtue.

Loveleopardprint · 05/01/2012 21:34

Perhaps we need to synchronise days?

Then we'd all be bloody miserable at the same time though. I am living vicariously (big word !) through other peoples eating whilst I am not!

ZZMum · 05/01/2012 21:38

I agree - it is nice to hear about the future when in the depths of the low cal day - and lets face it we are never more than 48 hours from a (relative) feast. Imagine us all on low cal days together - would be like communal PMT!

Loveleopardprint · 05/01/2012 21:45

Nightmare!!!

ZogTheDestroyer · 05/01/2012 22:31

Definitely a good idea to focus on the positive 'living vicariously' to avoid a nunnery situation :o

Even though I've just eaten a shedload of chocolate biscuits a little more than I'd have liked to, I've still stopped at 6 far sooner than I would have previously.

Actually, stuff all that, we're allowed to eat normally. Normally might be 5-a-day controlled sensible eating virtuousness, or it might be a bit of a pig-out after wine, as long as the 2 days diet is pretty much by the book, it's still 5/7=28% better than before, isn't it?

ExpatAgain · 06/01/2012 04:23

indeed, zog Grin.

glad to have hopped over the 650 cal day yesterday to a normal day today, save for the fact that i'm KNACKERED!

My sleep has gone to pot since i started this 3 days ago, it's not that i'm waking up hungry exactly, more that my system seems to be all over the place. I had to have a diet coke yest afternoon as about to keel over whereas don't normally "do" caffeine after lunch as keeps me awake, couldn't have helped. Don't think i had enough milk credits left to have had a pre-sleep mily drink, , maybe i need to work on my timing of things and try to do this in future. anyone else had the same problem?

wieghed myself first thing (pre-breakfast, so cheating rather) and seem to have lost a kilo! OTOH weighed self yest evening and had gained a kilo so who knows...

TracyK · 06/01/2012 08:17

Right girls - I'm joining you today.
I'm off shopping after I've done a couple of vat returns. I never eat while shopping -so today could be a good day to try the low cal option.
Off to read the website again - but quickly - is it semi skim milk? or skimmed?

radiohelen · 06/01/2012 09:27

Tracy Semi skimmed. Skimmed wouldn't keep you going.

Oh and I think the sheet says you can eat any veg but parsnips, potatos and sweet potatoes. Can't remember if sweetcorn is on there.

I think a support thread can be ongoing. If you are on a normal day you are duty bound to be supportive of the VLC people who are clearly going to be a bit fuzzy headed about everything and everyone can be supportive about making sensible choices the rest of the time. It's not eat what you like! It's eat a sensible Mediterranean diet of about 2000 calories a day.

Loveleopardprint · 06/01/2012 09:27

It's semi-skimmed.
Good luck. I am on second day and determined not to give in to bread like I did yesterday!

TracyK · 06/01/2012 10:35

I'm on my first milky coffee. I was all set up to make delish potato and leek soup - but then saw not allowed potatoes. Grr.

I don't think I could do 2 days in a row. I might do a Monday and Friday. Though my graze box arrives on a Friday - as it has done just now!!!

Sweetcorn not allowed but baby corn is - but yuk for me!

Any nice soup recipes? I have a nice courgette and dill one. Might nip to the shops for ingredients. But will that be a bad idea going food shopping while hungry? Should I just get through today with what I have (carrots and celery and a manky satsuma)?

ZZMum · 06/01/2012 10:53

Cauliflower is nice made into a soup as the milk goes well with it - I like a thick hearty one of broccoli with spinach and lots of garlic - I make a vat of this up and then on the almost normal days, add in a lot of bacon and lentils which makes a great soup.

Other ones - celeriac is good, I do not like sweet soups but you can do carrot and coriander.. butternut squash is nice as you can spice it up with chilli and cumin etc.

I also like Miso with a lot of shredded spring onion and cabbage and mushrooms..

Actually had forgotten about mushrooms generally - a bit plate of them stir fried in a lot of garlic and a tiny bit of butter and covered in tarrogan is quite lovely to

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 06/01/2012 12:37

Hmmm, wondering now about soup...I have in carrots, swede, leek, onion, broccoli, sugarsnap peas and cabbage. I also have frozen cauliflower florets in, but they're not particularly nice, and potatoes and sweet potatoes, which are not allowed. What recipes/soup do you think will be the most filling out of all that lot?

I have a stir fry mix for tea tonight, of cabbage, mangetout, carrots and butternut squash, but it has beansprouts in- reckon they're allowed? Might throw some chicken in too. I've just whipped up a 500ml pot of low fat yoghurt with about 120g of strawberries, to last me over the 2 days (as it says to cut down on fruit).

TracyK · 06/01/2012 13:03

Eek - only says 7 strawberries as 1 portion.
Just done a dog walk for 2 hours - so today so far have only had, 1 milky coffee, and am now eating an 80g carrot and a cup of tea with bit of milk.
Just spent £10 on fruit veg at the greengrocers!
I'm presuming you make a pot of soup then only have a bowl of it a day.
1 onion is 100g - so over the 80g allowance. 1 courgette is 140g.
Need to work this out so that if I have a bowl of soup - I still have enough allowance for a stir fry for dinner.
I reckon beansprouts are ok.
I don't think cabbage or sugarsnap peas lend themselves to soup. Maybe make a coleslaw? What could you use instead of mayo in coleslaw?

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 06/01/2012 13:31

I figured I would use 2 days allowance of veg in the soup, then half it, saves making it twice. I'm not being too strict on the portions of veg, etc, just keeping to no carbs and 650 calories- or trying at least!

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 06/01/2012 13:33

Sorry, meant to say- not a big coleslaw fan! Might play about on myfitnesspal, see what the calories in soup come out as.

TracyK · 06/01/2012 13:43

I love coleslaw - BUT with mayo!
(skinny) dh just told me he and (skinny) ds having fish and chips from a posh chippie tonight!!!! argh!

TracyK · 06/01/2012 13:43

Can we use whole grain mustard as a flavourer?

ZZMum · 06/01/2012 13:45

the amount you would use would be tiny so not many calories to worry about! have you thought of using yoghurt to dress coleslaw - I have done it mixing it with bit of lemon juice and salt and pepper .. mind you it was the full fat type!
