I am at the age where it is just a matter of (short) time before I develop a health problem relating to my weight - joints, Type 2 diabetes or even a heart attack. It really is that serious.
I am sick of not having any "nice" clothes (don't want to invest until I lose weight Hmm).
I did it in summer, stuck to it for ages which is something I have never managed to do. I CAN do it again.

So here's the plan. Back to foodfocus as of tomorrow. No days off (logging, although I may choose to eat more than I am "allowed". Everything must be logged.
No excessive competitiveness with myself. I truly believe this is part of the reason it all went wrong.

3 or 4 lb to lose every week. Might sound a lot but it's easy when you're big - I'm sure I could do it by just eating 3 normal sized usual meals a day. So pathetic if I can't.

Coming back here to report on progress. Caring and supportive thread but not accepting bullshit excuses!
Anyone want to join me?

And me too please. I'm 40 in August and will not be a fat, frumpy forty! My goal is 2 stone. Am going to start the year by quite strict detox and no alcohol (my complete downfall Sad. Also going to step up the exercise & may sign up for a charity run. My start date is Jan 1st.

ThatsYouThatIs · 28/12/2011 15:06

I've just weighed myself for the first time in ages.

I'm 5'6, size 22 and my start weight is 19st 5lbs Sad

I was going to wait until the new year to start but after seeing how much I weigh (and realising that I have put 3 stone on during 2011 Blush) I am starting now Smile.

Overall I need to lose nearly half my bodyweight. For now I think my goal will be to get back to 16st 7lbs!

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 15:18

Wow this thread is popular!
I love " I seem to be quite capable of steering with one hand, leaving the other free for a chocolate bar" - that would be me.
RIght, off to weigh myself. And as someone else says "NO CRAP EXCUSES". I really want people to call me on it.

OK, with my clothes on I am 15 and a half stone. Which is actually much better than I thought - I started the summer at 16lb7, and finished at 15, so only put on half a stone (and I think at least 2lb of that has been today alone). So sod the diet, pass the cream cakes!
(only joking...)

Must get new scales - I was 10lb just looking at them! Might go and see if they adjust so I can at least start at zero

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 15:23

ThatsYouThatIs, you can do it. If I can, everyone can :o
(including me, this time round, although I have my doubts)

If most of you are starting today, I am going to see how you get on for the first week on the various things people are doing and see if anything tempts me more than WW.

Tis carbs for me that are the problem. Plus I did a saliva test to keep my Mum company a couple of months ago and it came back as having positive Gliadin antibodies (or something like that) so I might have some gluten issues going on.

Soup made and bolognese in slow cooker. I've been really lucky and have an allotment so need to get out there again. Just used some butternut squash and some marrow that we have left and am starting to plan what to grow this year as has double benefit of exercise from gardening and eating the veg. If anyone is thinking of growing some veg this year but not sure about it, give me a shout- am far from an expert but have managed ok and probably have some spare seeds around.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 15:25

Cother, it's not an enormous task, because every half stone lost is an achievement. Really. At 15st8 I am healthier than I was at 16lb7. I am closer to my goal. Even if you only lose half a stone and maintain it, it would be fantastic. Come on, you can do it!

OP posts:
WynkenBlynkenandNod · 28/12/2011 15:26

Stealth, I weigh pretty much the same as you I think. Can't face the scales today.

MABS · 28/12/2011 15:34

i cant (won't) start til kids back tues. I am 5ft 8, weigh 10stone 8 and must get back to 9stone 8 at least. Could do with losing off the ff boobs as well :(

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 15:37

MABS I remember you from my last thread!

I'm in, too. I had my son in January and was losing weight steadily but then went back to work in October and weightloss has stalled completely Sad.

I'm around 13 stone and 5'7". 11.5 stone is the lowest I usually get to but would like to get to around 10.5 and stay there! I'd love to lose 10lb in January as then I'd be at the weight I was when I got pregnant

My plan is to loosely follow a low GI diet. My main meals tend to be healthy but I snack on rubbish way too much and my portion sizes have crept up. Also I've been struggling to fit in exercise as my husband works long hours but I have decided to get up at 6am when he does and do my exercise then - runs on 2 days, video or weights on 2 other days, then a longer run on the weekend.

I look forward to seeing everyone's progress Smile

MABS · 28/12/2011 16:43

indeed Stealth! I was a crap failure then too :(

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 16:51

put it this way, if I come within 2 st of your current pre-diet weight, I'll be a very happy bear

Hello, please can I join in?

I am huge and really need to do something about it now, before I become very ill.

I think I am around 15 and a half stone or maybe a little bit more. Size 18 bottoms are very snug and I am not buying a size 20. I'm a bit smaller on top- more of a 16.

At my thinnest I was 8 and a half stone! I would like to get somewhere near that again, so that's about 6 or 7 stone to lose Shock.

I am a creature of habit, which means I eat the same things over and over again, for example I have to have toast with marmite for breakfast every day (4 slices, buttery sides facing each other so no marmite gets on the back of another slice, cut in half and on a certain plate Blush it sounds a bit strange when I write it like that) it's a comfort/ routine thing.

I also got into bad habits when I developed a bit of a phobia of being hungry. I did preventative eating Blush. I eat all the wrong things, loads of bread and pasta and pizza, hardly any veg and zero fruit. I cannot remember the last time I ate a pice of fruit. I need to be honest here. I think my dreadful attitude to food is rubbing off on my kids- though they do eat a lot of fruit and veg and not as much processed crap as I eat.

My step-Mum has asked me to go to WW with her- anyone have experience of WW? I'm a bit worried about the idea of a rigid diet, counting points etc.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 17:36

Hi PfishFoodAddiction (love the name - share the addiction) so miuch in your post rings true with me. Food as comfort and stability. I too eat too little fruit. Am also worried about my DC seeing me eat like this and thinking it's normal.
I found food focus worked well, and youhave nothing to lose if not as it's free. Spend a day logging all your usual meals and snacks, and then you just select it from favourites. The calories etc it assigns are never going to be exact but it's usually good enough and it hardly matters - it's not scientific, btu seeing the calories mount up during the day was the important thing for me - it made me stop and think. It also made me realise that not every meal has to have the nicest food you can possibly have. E.g. jacket potatoes are lovely stuffed with butter, cheese, beans and sweetcorn. But just have them like that every now and again - mostly just have beans and some red onion. Yes, it's dull, but it;s a meal that fills you up without being too hiugh in calories. What I'm trying to say is it did help me shift my attitude to food a bit. I just need to stick to that now!

Thanks Stealth Smile

I took the kids swimming. No one through up when I walked in, the water stayed in the pool and they didn't call the zoo to help with the beached whale so all's good. I even went as far as getting the opening times so I can start going in the evening without the kids so I can actually swim.

And I downloaded the C25K podcasts.

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 17:45

good for you! Lol at beached whale.
Can you be bothered to go swimming (not helping here am I?). In an evening by the time I'd found my stuff, got in the car, got there...it'd be bedtime. I decided a quick run was the least time-intensive form of exercise, though less fun.
(if fun is a word that can ever be in a sentence with exercise)

OP posts:
CotherMuckingFunt · 28/12/2011 18:25

I absolutely love swimming. The kids go to bed at 7:30 and the pool is 2 mins down the road so it should be doable. It also helps that dh watches shit on tv for an hour after we get rid of the kids so it will be something to do.

I really want to start running as well but I'm less inclined to do that as we live in the country with no lights. I can't risk doing it in the daytime as there are people. I don't like people.

CotherMuckingFunt · 28/12/2011 18:26

FFS - just noticed I put 'through' instead of 'threw'.

Must have been the shock of the pool meddling with my brain

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 18:50

ah yes - what would put me off most wpould be all the faffing around getting there - we're a 20 min drive away.
Yours spounds good, in fact I'd prob come back home wrapped in a towel to use my own shower :o
Agree - I can;t run in daylinght and/or where people I know can see me. So the neighbours will all have to sign a contract to stay inside with their blinds drawn between 6.30am and 7.30am :o

I am in too please. I'm around 100kg have lost 6 or 7 kg during the spring/summer bit can't really find a sustainable method.

I am very worried about my health, although I do walking and some sports I worry about diabetes and heart trouble etc.

Would love to lose around 35kg

StealthPolarBear · 28/12/2011 18:54

What is your plan?

fivegomadindorset · 28/12/2011 18:56

I am in. Just off out but will introduce properly tomorrow.

ledkr · 28/12/2011 18:57

Im in.I can no longer kid myself that i am carrying "baby weight" she is nearly one fgs Grin

I am back at work next week have just realised none of my work clothes fit me. I am ashamed.I was a 12-14 and am now a tight 16 grrrr.

I have had a massive craving for cakes and pastries, and being at home means i am grazing all day.

I plan to do slimming world and am treating myself to a posh gym with a creche so ther is no excuse.

ps.Is anyone else going to wait until new year?I have to go away for new year and there is still too much junk in the house to contemplate a diet just yet.

notyummy · 28/12/2011 18:59

Just a thought- those who enjoy swimming, then obviously go ahead as it is better than not doing any exercise. Be aware however that it is not the best exercise for weight loss as it stimulates appetite (running and weight training both suppress) and as it is not weight bearing then you have to work a lot harder for a lot longer to burn the equivalent calories as running. Perhaps mix the swimming up with some running/ DVDs?
