Hello - I am on day 16 and have lost a stone so far. Another 11lb to go. It is a harsh diet for mt but it does work and I am never hungry. Suggested menus that I like:
Smoked salmon
Eggs - omelettes etc
Steaks and onion
Grilled leans bacon
Ham
0% yoghurt
Chicken
Lots and lots of water
Diet drinks
Mint tea
Walking 30 mins a day!

The protein veg days are soooooo much better - home made soups, salads, vegis from the list!

Good luck x x

Have you got the book? Its a really interesting read, particularly the part about why your body wants to put weight back on and how to avoid it.

I would definately recommend reading the book.

A friend of mine did it and lost 3 stone at the beginning of the year and hasn't put any of it back on.

I hope nobody minds if I share my experience with the Dukan Diet. I don't want piss on the Dukan parade, but it should come with a warning.

Positives: if you follow it to the letter it definitely works as advertised.

Negatives: it can really screw your adrenal glands make you feel like crap.

I started it in April. Wanted to lose 5 - 8 lbs in a hurry, and absolutely followed the Attack Phase to the letter. Didn't feel hungry, really noticed weight loss in a hurry, but on day 5 of the attack phase, I started waking up at night at 1 am and was wide awake past 4 am, feeling my heart pounding and the blood racing around my body like I'd had four pots of coffee before going to bed. Same thing the next night and the next night and the night after.

Asked a physician friend of mine what might be happening (in the guise of "this is happening to my friend" :o and he said that an all (or mostly) protein diet lowers blood sugar so far down in the night that the body goes into a ketotic state and the adrenals start pumping out cortisol which has the effect of releasing glucagon where it's stored in the muscle and converting it to blood glucose to raise blood sugar. A massive adrenal discharge of cortisol will wake you from sleep and make you feel completely frantic and wired.

I immediately started adding complex carbohydrates (mostly vegetables and some low-glycemic-index fruit) to my diet. Minimal change. Awake from 1-4 am and dead tired the next day. Added more fruit and whole grains. Minimally better, again. Gave up the Dukan Diet but tried to eat healthy and increase excercise. Didn't help the night waking and general feeling like crap.

It took months to lower my daytime cortisol and start sleeping at night again, and I felt like utter dragged-through-the-road crap for all those months.

For me, the Dukan diet wasn't worth how much it stressed my adrenals.

Now, a couple of things may have worked against me - it would be unfair of me to blame it all on the Dukan Diet because I think I may have been stupid when I started it.

I may have been predisposed to adrenal problems with an all-protein diet because I was pretty stressed anyway. Also, I was not overweight when I started, I was average weight but wanted to return to my very slim days - I just wanted to lose those 5-8 lbs that had crept on since I completely gave up breastfeeding. And finally, I may have stretched the Attack Phase out too long. In the book it says (if I recall correctly) that you can do the Attack phase for up to ten days (I think, please correct me if I misremember). So that's what I thought I'd do, even though that wasn't what the book recommended for the little weight I wanted to lose.

I still think the Dukan Diet can work, and work extremely well, but I think it needs to be followed to the letter, especially in the Attack Phase, and I think if anyone starts to experience night wakening and feeling horribly distressed and wired, they should come off the diet completely at once.

I really hope this helps - I'm not trying to be miserable about the diet, I just really hope sharing this helps someone else avoid what happened to me.

Holy crap that was a long post!! Sorry!!!!! Blush

mixedmamameansbusiness · 15/11/2011 14:17

Jacksmania - no thank you, it is helpful. He does seem to stress throughout the book that following to the letter is the key to it all. I am going to carefully monitor everything. I also previously lost my 3 stone with WW so this is quite different but the idea that it can be maintained is appealing. Will watch out for the signs though.

I am on day one and have eaten some odd combos today - the webiste recommended 6 days for Attack so will see how that goes.

WentworthMillerMad · 15/11/2011 21:59

Hi everyone - jack thank you that is a brilliant post and I am sorry you were unwell but thank you for sharing this.
I was the fattest I have ever been. I am 5 ft 8 and weighing 12 7 lb. the dukan web site said a maximum of 4 days attack even though my 'true weight' was 10 9lb. 10 days is only if you have 40 lb plus to lose and even then 7 days is the norm.
I would not recommend more than 4 days attack, especially after reading jacks.
I am walking Each day and am sleeping better than ever but I have also stopped drinking wine which I know disturbes my sleep.
I will be very aware now of any dukan symptoms.

Water water water!

WentworthMillerMad · 15/11/2011 22:04

Sorry meant to say NO more than 4 days for 3 stone weight loss.

For one stone I would do 2 days attack and no more!

Jacksmania · 15/11/2011 22:41

So clearly that's where I went wrong then :o

That's what you get for thinking a medical background means you know better and the rules don't apply to you :o

mixedmamameansbusiness · 16/11/2011 12:04

Hmm the website said 6 days Attack for me. I have exactly 3 stone to lose (well plus 2 pounds).

I have to say that despite the choice of meat and fish available I cannot wait to add some salad and veggies.

Luckily I dont like the yolk of egg when boiled so have today been able to have 2 boiled for brekkie and an omelette with some smoked salmon for lunch.

Apparently my breath stank this morning according to DH. I knew to expect it.

Although I popped on the scales (since the book says weigh whenever) and I seem to have lost a pound in a day?!

Jacksmania · 16/11/2011 16:20

I think Piere Dukan says a pound a day is possible if you've quite a bit to lose?

Yes, the ketone breath and mouth pasties - bleurgh.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 18/11/2011 14:12

Well I have done 3 days of pure protein. Lost 4 lbs. Very pleased but have intorduced salad and veges now as I couldnt stomach another day. I will follow though with a pure protein day tomorrow but who knew I could be so pleased to have veges in my life.

Jacksmania · 18/11/2011 14:53

Good for you!! Yes, that first crunch of red pepper was blissful! :)
