www.calculator.net/ideal-weight-calculator.html

Gives a range of values.

theladylovescupcakes · 14/05/2011 23:09

thanks keynesian, looks like 10st is my ideal weight - seems like a long way away Hmm

I just did that, and based on most of them I am (very slightly) over my ideal weight (although not by much)... I am 5 foot 4, medium build and now a size 10 - BMI 21.3 (9 stone exactly). The ideal weights ranged from 120 - 129 - 3 out of 4 were less than the 126 pounds I weigh.

Actually am surprised that ideal weight so low... sort of thought before I started diet that a BMI of 22.5 was best as it was right in middle of normal....

foreverondiet · 14/05/2011 23:22

Interesting about the different formulas:

www.halls.md/ideal-weight/devine.htm

theladylovescupcakes · 14/05/2011 23:22

apparently my weight range is 8.1/2 st to 12 st! Quite a large variation! Used to be 8st and considering I'm 5ft9 I looked like I had an eating disorder.

The range is based on BMI. At that height 8 stone would be far too thin.

I wasn't surprised by BMI range more surprised at the formulas for "ideal" weight as they suggest a BMI of 20.5 to 22 (ie all in lower end of supposed healthy BMI).

Jacksterbear · 16/05/2011 12:46

Bloody hell, the "ideal" weights on that first link (calculator.net) seem very low! Shock

foreverondiet · 16/05/2011 21:55

Jacksterbear - exactly what I thought too! For me would be BMI of around 21.

supernannyisace · 17/05/2011 17:48

I hate ideal weight range calculators. :)

According to that one - at 5'9" I should weight somewhere between 10stone 1lb and 12stone 1lb ( I think). I have been 10 stone - well a little less - and on,ly achieved that by a diet of black coffee and cigarettes....

I am right at the top end at the moment - as I do a LOT of exercise. I tend to build muscle quite easily. So if I didn't exercise so much I would weigh less but look fatter ?

Hm.....

benbon · 17/05/2011 18:04

my friend is 5"8 and her ideal weight is 11.10 and mine at 5"5 is 10.10

Verso · 18/05/2011 10:13

This is fascinating - especially the post about the formulae. By the old calculations I need to lose another 10lb to a stone to be my ideal weight Shock - which, given that I am already size 10 (5'7") and keep getting told I'm getting too thin (have lost a lot of weight in the past year) would be far too skinny IMO. I know people are generally getting bigger but these "ideal" weights seem unhealthy and unrealistic. Must cause people a lot of stress if they use them too rigidly! Go with how you feel and how your clothes fit (within the healthy BMI range) I reckon.

foreverondiet · 18/05/2011 11:15

Verso I agree - we'd all have to be a size 8 to be at the ideal weight these formula suggest.

sowhatshallido · 18/05/2011 11:38

I am a size 8 5.5" and weigh 8.12 - 9.1 and it says i am too heavy! My 'ideal' weight is said to be 8.7 - if i weighed that i would have no tits, and be really bony.
Interesting that the lower ideal weight ones are based from 1964 and 1974.
The 1983 ones have me spot on ideal weight now - which following my weight loss in the last year i feel good at and think is right.

sowhatshallido · 18/05/2011 11:43

weird - i just put husbands details in - 6 foot and in 1964 and 1974 tables say he should be heavier than it says for the 1983 versions - so the opposite of womens, which say lighter in the earlier tables and heavier now!

Based on the Robinson formula (1983), your ideal weight is 164.9 lbs
Based on the Miller formula (1983), your ideal weight is 161.2 lbs
Based on the Devine formula (1974), your ideal weight is 171.1 lbs
Based on the Hamwi formula (1964), your ideal weight is 177.2 lbs

Jacksterbear · 18/05/2011 12:15

sowhat, it's crazy isn't it - am same height as you and currently 9.12, would like to be between 9.0 and 9.7.

At under 9st people start asking if I am unwell; 8.7 would be unhealthy and unsustainable, for me. I think I last weighed that as a (borderline anorexic) 12 year old!

foreverondiet · 18/05/2011 12:41

sowhat - at 5 foot 5.5 inches the ideal weight range from over 9 stone to 9.5 stone... which is what you are. Recommended weight of 8.5 stone (ie 119 pounds) is only for those 5 foot 4 and under, and even then only by the lowest calculation.

sowhatshallido · 18/05/2011 12:46

I must have typed in 5 foot 4 because I am 5 foot 4 and a half - so sometimes put one and sometimes the other!

It is interesting how they vary through time though!

Joby1970 · 18/05/2011 12:48

well I'm 5' 5" & weight 12 stone = 168lbs & can wear size 10-12 clothes! I do go to the gym & have a quite a bit of muscle . Glad I don't follow the charts! Grin

Ormirian · 18/05/2011 12:54

Blimey! I am a porker then.

I'm 5'11 and at my slimmest I only got down to 149lbs. Suddenly BMI doesn't sounds so bad Confused
