I am going to start walking everywhere I can. How far and how fast do I have to walk each day for it to cause me to lose weight?

I have 2 1/2 stone to lose after losing 1 stone and need to get back to the losing weight mind set. Life is too short to never eat the odd treat so I need to up my exercise regime. Kids are not going to be happy...

ooh marking my spot because that sounds like a bloody good idea! I hate running, never have time for swimming or going to the gym. I already walk a lot anyway, but I need to motivate myself to do more.

I walk approx 2 hrs a day and moderate to slow pace. Been doing this since November last year (got a dog) and lost over a stone BUT have been eating like a pig since so could have been a lot more.

Cycling is another option which is also good for loosing weight!

Good luck!

A stone loss from November would suit me! I took 2-3 months to lose a stone I think but things in real life have conspired for me to put a few pounds on plus I have been comfort eating which I had stopped doing.

eek, 2 hours a day. Not sure I can do that on a work day, very long shifts, long commute. But I could do that on a non work day (4 days a week) I already get ds to walk loads, scooter helps. Not sure about cycling, where could I put dd?

TheOriginalFAB · 25/04/2011 20:49

If DH sorts my bike out that would be do-able but I would need a basket for the front for my shoppingGrin.

I've heard you use 100 cal for each stone you weigh for each mile you walk. ie. a 10 stone person would burn 100 cals a mile. there are approx 3500 cals in a pound of fat so you'd need to do 35 miles to burn a pound of weight Hmm

HOWEVER, you'd also be raising your metabolic rate and lifting your mood so you'd be less likely to overeat.

Doesn't matter how fast you walk, you still burn roughly the same cals per mile except you'd do more distance in the same time iyswim.

Well we set off and the 5 year old got stroppy about walking. It was quite cool so I told him we would drive half way but that is it. I am not giving in again. There will be a major strop when he comes out of school and realises he has to walk the whole way home.

mololoko "I've heard you use 100 cal for each stone you weigh for each mile you walk."

Wouldn't that mean that a 10st person would use 1000 cal per mile?

If you have a smart phone download the run keeper app. Very useful for keeping you motivated while walking. I did a 10 mile walk last night (training for the moonwalk). It took 3 hours 15 mins and burned 926 cals.

Hope this helps.

I don't have a smart phone and have lost or broken 3 pedometers so far.

I have been doing housework all morning. Have had 20 minutes sit down and will now peg out more washing and at 2 I am going to walk to the shop to get a paper and then to school to get the kids. If you listen about 3.20 you might hear a 5 year old having a strop and saying he is staying at school then!

Doesn't work for me. I have been wearing a pedometer for about two years, doing over 10000 steps a day, some days alot more, and have lost nothing. I guess if you are going from being completely inactive tho it might work.

melliebobs · 27/04/2011 12:33

Well recommendations are to maintain health to do 30 mins of moderate activity 5 times a week.

Recommendations for weight loss are 60 mins moderate activity 5 times a week.

On top of that its recommended to maintain a good level of overall health everyone should do 10,000 steps EVERY day.

Sooooooooo if you fancy doing walking to aid weight loss then to definatly be getting those 10,000 steps in and spend an hour walking where youre working at a moderate level. So you're pushing yourself so your breathless but can still talk, feeling warmer/breaking into a sweat and your heart is beating faster. So stride out, quicker steps and drive those arms!

TheOriginalFAB · 27/04/2011 12:51

I walked to school - 30 minutes.
Walked to the village and home - 45 minutes.
Housework, including hoovering all downstairs and cleaning the little loo floor and pegging out 2 lots of washing - 2 hours.

Calories burnt - probably about 4.

I enjoyed the walk and it was easier than expected as coming back is a very steep hill. I wouldn't be able to do that fast at the moment, especially without my inhaler.
