If you have done Atkins, please could you take a look at my first day food diary?

Hi all,

I decided to start Atkins. I have read up on it and I think I understand how it works...

Anyway, today I have eaten:
Breakfast- 2 boiled eggs.
Lunch- green salad eaves with bacon and brie.
Dinner- shepherds pie made with mashed caulifower instead of potato and no gravy/sauce.
Drinks- loads of water, 200ml of coke zero and 2 cups decaff tea with red milk.

Is that ok or have I made any major faux pas? I would like something sweet to eat but guess I just can't. I'm hoping coke zero is ok as it has no carbs? If s, this will help curb my sweet cravings!!

Thanks

I did Atkins a few months ago. I had done it a few years earlier and found it worked, but 2 DC later all the weight was back on! The thing I was careful with this time was eating enough carbs and fibre. DH didn't eat any carbs and actually stopped losing weight at all! (Plus he felt awful).

I would eat alot of spinach, about 100g a day, as it is v low in carbs but reasonably high in fibre (to avoid the constipation which is an irritating side effect of Atkins!).

Not sure if you've read the book, but UK food labelling is all net carbs anyway - Induction phase is 20g of net carbs. Which is about 2 slices of bread, or several bags of spinach!!!

How are we all doing? I've eaten about a hundred ice pops today just to have something to cruch

Urgh. Think I'm about ready to give up with this... I know I'm only 6 days in but I've got no energy, I'm on my period and craving something sweet! Would KILL for a glass of mulled wine. I've loved not feeling bloated after meals though. I miss milk in my tea. I'm fed up of eating salad almost every meal. I've realised I don't particularly like meat that much. I'm loving the Brie, but without grapes, what's the bloody point?

Can you tell I've hit a wall?

Ah yes. It is difficult in the beginning. I gave up a few times after 4 days or so, usually on period is v difficult as you are so tired and lethargic anyway. By day 10 life starts to get much better!

Are you eating enough fibre? That can make you very tired. You could maybe 'treat' yourself to some berries - blackberries are v low carb/low cal and also high fibre. I know they are not really allowed in the induction phase, but they were always my treat and I still lost 10lb in 3 weeks. Just don't eat too many - they are better than grapes!

Can you do something else - bath/walk/good book to take your mind off food?

Have you tried soya milk? Is very low carb (if unsweetened, check the product). I still had milk in my tea - but just a splash and only 2 cups a day. Otherwise, frankly I couldn't deal with life!

I sound like a terrible cheat, don't I?

cupofteaplease · 10/10/2010 08:25

Thank you for replying! Unfortunately I cracked last night and had a glass of mulled wine. I don't actually feel that bad about it though... I've also resorted to having sugar free squash in my water, I couldn't deal without it.

Oh well, I'm back on it today. I'm such an idiot though cos I didn't actually weigh myself before starting so I don't know if I've lost anything either!

Don't feel bad cupoftea - Atkins is hard but worth it once you get going.

The fact that you weren't feeling so bloated suggests that you will have lost inches.

If it makes you feel any better yesterday I had a cheese toastie for lunch and had dinner with friends which among other things included roasties and a pud and shared 5 bottles of wine and a bottle of gin

I often allow myself the weekend off and then go strict in the week - whilst it does slow weight loss down it does make it less unpleasant.

I have previously done this diet before years ago after childbirth as I eat lots of naughty things while preggies but over the last year have eat nothing but crap to be honest...have a very big weakness for chocolate but so far so good. I weighed 14 and a half stone last weds, 44 inches round biggest point of stomach and size 18 jeans. 5 days later I have lost an inch, my jeans are looser and im now 14 stone. I drink diet pepsi till it comes out of my ears, i tend not to drink too much water apart from a bottle 750ml during the day when i am at work. i dont drink hot drinks so im ok there and i dont eat fruit...yuk...have been very strict with carbs except i heard you should have a naughty day every 5 day roughly so had a creme brulee last night...am on my period today and usually bloat a little so am very happy with the results...if you want anymore info dont hesitate to ask...and good luck...:)
p.s. just to let you know you can make your own sauces using the packets sauces ie: i like peppercorn sauce with my steak but instead of using normal milk, use unsweetened soya milk its a lot less and still tastes creamy and add a little butter...hope this helps :)
