Anyone gone cold turkey after significant loss and significant time on them.
Just wondering what side effects to expect

Yes I put the weight back on that I had lost. I’m starting again a year later. Appetite slowly came back over a few months and by I’d say 6 months I’ve managed to keep about 1/2stone maybe a stone off my starting weight

Wendyworm · 20/06/2026 15:19

Why do you think the weight went back on

OP posts:
frecklejuice · 20/06/2026 15:20

Yes and I put on 3 stone of the 4 that I lost, I was gutted. The hunger after coming off was through the roof and I literally could not stop eating!

Ive had to go back on it and have just started week 2.

Wendyworm · 20/06/2026 15:22

Ok .that's two of you saying similar..so that's obviously going to be the same with me ..
How will it be different when you go back on them this time

OP posts:
RoseField1 · 20/06/2026 15:23

You may need to try titrating down rather than going cold turkey.

Wendyworm · 20/06/2026 15:24

So I'm obviously going to be on a merry go round of going on and of these meds for the rest of my life
Or I learn to live with extreme hunger
I wish I'd had weight loss surgery when I had chance

Why do you think the weight went back on

Like all medication, it only works when you take it. Stop, and the effects/benefits also stop. I think people think it just supresses appetite but it does more than that. I think studies show most people who stop put the weight back on eventually (think it was within a year or two)

All 3 people i know who had surgery put weight back on :( they are on wli now.

You can just stay on the injections like any other medication. No merry go round then.

LoSlo3toGo · 20/06/2026 15:29

I haven’t experienced coming off WLI’s (just started) but I’ve read a lot about it

High levels of rebound hunger & regaining most of the weight is apparently the norm

Also the norm is the injections being less effective second time around - esp if you used MJ first & switched to Wegovy , because MJ works on 2 pathways and Wegovy only 1 (there are always exceptions though)

For this reason I’ve started on Wegovy and trying to use the lowest effective dose. I expect I may have to stay on these for 5+ years (or even life) to maintain

Have spent the last 30 years dieting between a big size 18 (maybe 20) down to a small 16/14 so pretty ‘average’ level of weight problem, 2-4 stone not 10 stone to get rid of, & think this is what it will look like for me

Even after weight loss surgery, you know people who put weight back on ..I thought the stomach was smaller so you couldn't eat as much

Why is that the norm though
Does that mean people are eating more

OP posts:
LividSun · 20/06/2026 15:34

I started (seven weeks and a stone ago) expecting that I'd be signing up for life in some way or another.

The change to my behaviour is such that I know I couldn't do this without the drugs. I just hope the price gets lower and the maintenance gets easier, maybe pills or cheaper jabs designed round lower doses over less frequent intervals. (But I have a way to go yet). I take other life long medications, I see this as no different now.

This makes so much sense. I stopped Mounjaro after having amazing results (4 stone loss) but 10mg made me feel so awful I decided that was enough. I then out on 3 stone and earlier this year tried Wegovy for 3 months because it was cheaper, it had zero effect on me. I may as well have been injecting water. I’m now back on Mounjaro and it’s definitely helping but no where near as strong or as fast as the first time.

Wendyworm · 20/06/2026 15:36

I've been on it 18 months and it definitely doesn't work as well as it did at the start

OP posts:
ItsStillWork · 20/06/2026 15:38

I was on them for a year and lost over 6 stone. Was on 15mg Mounjaro and stopped cold turkey.

didnt re gain any weight.

stopped it in May last year then bought one 2.5mg pen in Dec to help me over Xmas as there’s loads of Christmas sweet stuff about. It worked instantly.

still went back on it 2 months ago to shift a stone (I haven’t gained any weight since stopping last May) as I still felt abit too heavy.

I calorie count and weigh 90% of things I eat and I don’t go over EVER! If I haven’t for the calories for it then it’s tough shit I can’t have it.

I don’t want to ever end up over weight or gaining so no matter how hard it is I have to say no to stuff as being slim means more to me than going back down that road again

That doesn't stop the hunger though from what I've read, just makes it more difficult to over eat.

I dont think people have been using jabs (for weight loss) for long enough to have long term data for life after stopping the meds.
But, my plan so far has been to reduce dose while increasing calories and exercise. I lost 80 pounds and have been maintaining since Jan on a lower dose.
I'm 5 ft4, 124-126 pounds and aim for 1750 calories a day (120-130g protein)
I use weights machines at the gym or kettlebells/dumbells at home 5 day a week. I only do about 6000 steps a day because i have a desk job so do need to increase that.
I went up to 12.5mg mounjaro and now on 5mg but its quite hard at the moment. I am very hungry alot of the time. Been on 5mg for about 4 weeks so trying my best to stick with it.
Id like to come off the jabs entirely but this hunger tells me i cant yet.
There are people on these threads who have managed to come off and not regain for now but im not sure thats the norm.

BackToWegovy · 20/06/2026 15:42

If you think about set point theory, then the drugs are going to work less well the more weight you have lost and further away you are from your set point because your body is fighting back harder. If you go cold Turkey then all of that fighting back is suddenly not being counterbalanced by the effect of the drug so of course people become ravenously hungry and gain weight quite quickly unless they are very disciplined. I have taken both drugs and switched between them with breaks due to side effects. Every time I have a break, I gain weight very quickly. I am now quite scared to go up to a particularly high dose and I’m currently losing weight steadily on 7.5 mg Mounjaro, but last year I was gaining steadily on 1 mg Wegovy. Even though I have lost with Wegovy successfully twice before.

Really ..that's fantastic
So as long as we stick to the calories, the weight doesn't go back on ?
I was imagining that just because we stopped the medication, the weight automatically goes back on ,no matter what we do

Why on earth would you stop a medication that you knew worked well for you. What a waste of hundreds if not thousands of pounds!

Yes they can eat slider foods, things that slide down easily, people will melt chocolate for example or snack constantly, also stretch their stomachs. They're often still hungry and have the cravings.
