New to mounjaro…. Wow

Hi all I took my first shot of mounjaro last night and wow…. Maybe I’m really unlucky 😂 but I’ve had so many side effects. I woke up at 8 for the loo, went back and forth a couple times then fell back asleep. Woke up to a sore stomach cramps and feeling light headed. Had some nausea so had toast, had a protein shake and I’m drinking water and electrolytes. I took myself back to bed to relax for a few hours and crashed out for ages as felt really nauseous. I’ve sat munching on crackers and drinking water. Still feeling nauseous, light headed and stomach pains….. definitely not for the weak. I’m really hoping a good sleep and I’ll feel better tomorrow. I did expect the stomach issues but not the light headed.

It does sound like you've been really unlucky.

madeinthe80z · 31/05/2026 05:59

Ooh unlucky :( What did you eat yesterday prior to your jab? This may have affected it?

Skullfirm · 31/05/2026 06:41

Don't eat toast, or anything carby really it'll just make it worse, I don't think you've been unlucky a lot of my friends and family and myself had horrendous side effects, but they settled down when my diet changed completely,so no crap just protein heavy, lots of water do NOT even contemplate anything fatty,so butter on your toast?stick it out and change your diet it will get better.

Notsosweetcaroline · 31/05/2026 06:49

That is incredibly unlucky, I’ve never had any side effects, 80 percent of people don’t.

can I ask two things, what did you eat yesterday and do you have health anxiety?

MynameisnotJohn · 31/05/2026 06:53

Unlucky. What do you normally eat? Maybe you’re too used to reaching for simple carbs when you feel a bit weak. It’s a great medication but you need to be trying to eat healthily now and not just eating bread. Can you try fasting and drinking lots of water?

VashtaNerada · 31/05/2026 06:54

This is exactly how my body reacted, it’s not that unusual. It got slightly better but in the end what worked for me was to split the dose and take it twice a week instead. It is so miserable at first though! I found Pepto Bismol was helpful. And Imodium. On the plus side, I lost loads of weight in the first few months!

VashtaNerada · 31/05/2026 06:56

Oh, and the only food I could keep down at times was plain white toast. My body absolutely could not tolerate fruit and veg when the nausea was bad - it could come straight back up again. You just have to eat whatever your body will allow you to keep down.

DBatteryBand · 31/05/2026 07:08

It does sound very unpleasant. I would avoid eating anything for a bit - drinking protein shakes (which can be gloopy and nausea-inducing) and munching crackers might not help...your body might just not want food for a few hours.

8books · 31/05/2026 07:24

Did you eat “clean” for a few days before starting? I’ve heard others have a similar response IRL and it’s usually because they had a blow out feast.

Hope the side effects stop quickly and you feel better soon!!

It really is a miracle drug.

Gardenflowering · 31/05/2026 07:33

Same here. Don’t worry though, it does get better. Stick it out.

Toast was the only thing that eased the nausea for me too. Could only manage half a slice!

I also came on MN to discuss the severity of the side effects and was told I was highly unusual, very unlucky and that it was something I was doing wrong, BUT it’s a powerful drug, it’s new to the body system, it has listed side effects so there you go!

These side effects lasted around 3/4 days for the first dose then same with the next, now I’m on 7.5 and still feel slight nausea but much less.

The complete opposite advice from me, eat little bits as you are doing, there’s a link between low blood sugar and nausea & I found from experience that it helped to ease the nausea for me.

LadyCurd · 31/05/2026 07:39

I was the same. I’ve been on it for a year and won’t go above 5mg and stayed on 2.5/3.75 til January as took that long for my body to get used to it. Peppermint oil capsules massively help with the nausea. Usually first couple days after each injection worst then it settles so I would time it for a week end so it wouldn’t affect work now I jab on a weds so I have fair but not max suppression over weekend. Eat and drink like you have morning sickness. First couple of months on it were the worse but I barely have any side effects now.

InfoSecInTheCity · 31/05/2026 07:42

Now is the time to set the scene for the rest of your time on Mounjaro.

Food should be lean protein, high fibre, good fats and low carb. Drink lots of clear fluids, water or the equivalent is really important, it helps prevent constipation, it is used by muscles to heal and by the chemical process that breaks down fat.

You need calories, do not get into the habit of existing of 500-800 calories a day, this will make you feel weak, light headed, generally ill and your hair and teeth will suffer. Calculate your TDEE and set your target at 300-500 below that. You will lose weight on a deficit that size, it will be slower than if you starve yourself but it will also be controlled and you’ll end up not only thinner but healthier.

You need to understand why Mounjaro works.

1- it affects your hormones so you produce more insulin in response to sugar, it increases your bodies sensitivity to the insulin it produces, it reduces the amount of glucose produced by your liver. This makes it less likely that sugar will be converted to fat.

2 - it slows your digestion, you feel fuller longer, any aggravating foods you eat will sit in your gut for longer, so the curry takeaways, the chips, the slice of cake or whatever will hang out in your intestines fermenting for longer. Eat clean.

3 - it reduces inflammation.

I have had amazing success with Mounjaro and very few side effects, the main one being feeling the cold a lot more, but when I do have a stupid meal, like a trip to the world buffet, I feel it the next day.

And finally on dosing, stick with the dose that’s working. If you have good loss and feel good on 2.5mg then there is no need to move up. I was prescribed due to Diabetes and NHS prescribing guidelines don’t let you stick at the .5 doses they are just used as a transition stage for 4 weeks so my dosage history went like this:

2.5mg - 4 weeks
5mg - 24 weeks
7.5mg - 4 weeks
10mg - never moved up from there and lost track of weeks but I started MJ in Sept 2024.

Super logical and measured advice right there! Wish you were around when I was struggling, this advice would have been a game changer for me.

Cece92 · 31/05/2026 08:43

I had eaten well prior as I’ve done a lot of research. Was hydrated and had my protein. Yesterday I had to drive crackers down my throat but I kept up with my hydration. I feel slightly better today still have a bit of nausea but nowhere near as bad. Slight headache, and I had sulphur burps and heart burn through the night. I’ll still stick it out for a few weeks hope it improves. I deliberately done it over the weekend so it didn’t affect work. Thank god I’m working from home tomorrow. It’s a roller coaster ladies lol

Poor you, it’s less than 5 percent of people have your reaction. Hope it works for you, if not suggest you stop. we all react to meds differently and this may be simply you can’t tolerate it.

I was like the over whelming majority no side effects and felt great from the first jab,

Davros · 31/05/2026 08:58

I must be lucky, I didn’t have these side effects, I was very slightly nauseous the day after injecting but only at first. I haven’t switched to “eating clean”, I don’t focus on protein or carbs or anything really. I kind-of eat the same as before but much less. Am I a freak?😱

Gardenflowering · 31/05/2026 09:06

I have changed my eating habits because of the severity of the nausea.

As far as possible I’ve cut UP foods, concentrating on fresh fruit, veg, cooking from scratch, high fibre, balancing nutritional content and 3litres of water/cordial limiting coffee. Because my intake has drastically decreased, what I do eat needs to matter I think.

I do track to keep macros on track too.
HRT, MJ & these changes have helped such a lot.
2.5 stone in 10 months gone so far which for me is nothing short of a magical miracle!

Cece92 · 31/05/2026 09:25

I do feel better today but the nausea makes me want to not eat lol! I’ve got a whey protein drink in my water and had an apple. I have plans next Saturday so I’m going to take my second dose on Thursday instead. I’m off Friday so if I’m unwell I can be unwell Friday. My daughter’s going out with her friends to the shops soon so she’s got a list to get for me high protein and fruit. If I never had the light headed ness I feel I would have been okay xxx

OP posts:
MoneyJo · 31/05/2026 09:27

Be careful of taking your dose a day early. You will still have some of this dose in your system so that will take you up above how much you had when you felt your worst.

WeepingInASunlitRoom · 31/05/2026 09:35

I'm two years in and am very sensitive to side effects. Certainly the first couple of weeks I had intense suppression and total exhaustion - made worse by not being able to eat much.

I am still on 5mg now - six stone down without needing to go higher (attempted to move towards 7.5mg and will never try that again!) So I would advise keeping to a low dose.

Pepto bismol is the best thing I've discovered. It stops sulphur burps immediately and prevents the d+v that usually follow.

When suffering with gastro effects, the only thing I can eat is carbs. Crackers and apples usually. Plenty of water is really important. I would argue that low carb is not for everyone and part of MJ is finding out what works for your body through trial and error. Some weird things happen, like monstrous sulphur burps after broccoli a couple of times (has put me right off!).

WeepingInASunlitRoom · 31/05/2026 09:36

Oh and I have loads more energy nowadays. Lots of exercise and a lot less weight slowing me down!

The only problem you might have is when you come off the jab and your appetite increases, you're likely to regain back to where you started. Use this time to overhaul your diet and lifestyle. It'll stand you in good stead for the future.
