Do weight loss injections switch off alcohol noise?

Hello. I’m about 2 stone overweight (BMI 29) and have tried everything to lose it with no permanent success. In the last 6 months, I have lost and gained the same half stone countless times! For context, I’m 57 and menopausal.
I hate to admit it but food is not really my weakness, it’s wine! 😳🤣
Now seriously considering WLIs as an absolute last resort. I’m aware that it switches off the food noise but does it have the same effect with alcohol? I only drink at weekends but find myself undoing all my good work from during the week. It’s a vicious cycle I just can’t get out of!
My husband is also worried about the potential effects on my health. Is he justified feeling like this? I’m so torn! 😭

They did for my Aunty who was a fairly heavy social drinker but didn’t really for me.
I usually have 2 large glasses of wine 3-4 times a week and continued whilst on MJ.
In terms of health effects it’s probably more risky long term being overweight or obese than taking Mounjaro.

The bigger issue is about long term habits. You would almost certainly lose weight on the injections but how will you keep it off long term?
MJ only works if your prepared to make long term lifestyle changes otherwise the weight just creeps back on once you stop.

RoseField1 · 04/04/2026 15:41

For some people yes. Your DH should consider the health risks of being borderline obese tbh rather than health risks of the medication.

mehday · 04/04/2026 15:42

For me it makes all wine taste like vinegar. Also gin turned too sweet for a while but I am back tolerating that now. Happily it’s less calorific than wine.

LilyBunch25 · 04/04/2026 15:42

Do they ever, for me definitely!! Literally to the point where we still have Christmas drink unopened in the cupboard- totally unheard of pre WLI

GiveMeWordGames · 04/04/2026 16:13

It's had a huge effect on my desire to drink. I rarely fancy it, and when I do I stop at 1-2 glasses. It's one component of the cost of MJ being offset by lower spending on other things for me.

The one time I drank "through", one summer evening, I ended up being sick later that night.

gaonimsc4 · 04/04/2026 16:15

Yes it has definitely reduced my alcohol consumption. Initially it was because side effects like nausea meant I just didn’t fancy it, and if I had some anyway I felt quite rough after it.

When I was more settled on the medication I found I fancied it a bit more again and was able to tolerate it, but I just didn’t want very much. I would often pour a second glass and not touch it! I still look forward to it on a Friday night, but once I’ve had one I’ve usually found that’s enough.

gaonimsc4 · 04/04/2026 16:16

They’re exploring the use of MJ for addictions like alcohol and even gambling, so it’s certainly not an unusual outcome and is widely seen.

Londonmummy66 · 04/04/2026 16:23

I can't say that it has stopped that for me - although it has worked on the food noise. I find having something to do with my hands in the evening is a better way of staying off the wine. I crochet or sew but even colouring in the old fashioned way or on an ipad would work....

notcomfortable · 04/04/2026 18:41

No, it hasn't stopped the alcohol noise if you will, for me. I wasn't a big drinker before mj but find myself wanting an alcoholic drink more often

TheChosenTwo · 04/04/2026 18:50

It has for me, I had probably had 5 drinks this year - I don’t really drink when I go out anymore, I tend to drive and I never drink at home at all. I used to enjoy an occasional glass of wine with my Sunday dinner and have a couple of drinks on a Friday night so never really a big home drinker but I don’t do either of those things anymore.
To be fair I had really cut down even pre MJ as I used to have about 5 drinks on a Friday night and also a couple on a Saturday night until my late 30’s when hangovers just became dreadful and I realised I couldn’t handle it anymore so didn’t drink much at all at home and only when I went out.
Since MJ my desire to drink has been less than ever.
however I know someone else taking it and it hasn’t had much of an effect on their drinking at all so I guess like all things it will have different effects on all of us. I’ve not really had any negative side effects on MJ,
no sickness or nausea. Did have hair loss but it’s settled now and have had some very occasional dizzy spells when I realised I wasn’t eating enough but rectified that quickly.

Thanks to you all for sharing your experiences. I guess I won’t know until I try!
Just feel so anxious about taking the plunge though…..😬

I think your BMI might be a little too low to qualify for it, even through private pharmacies..

Well, I’m going on a 16 night cruise in mid April so I imagine the BMI might be worse when I get back! 😳🤣 Not that that’ll be the plan!

🤣🤣 fair enough, fill your boots!! Good luck with it. Best thing I ever did- my BMI was only just 30 when I started..just over 25 now. It’s a miracle drug. Pal of mine on it who is a big drinker has not found it’s diminished her interest in the sauce but I think she’s unusual!

I'll let you know my experience -- took first jab tonight.

gaonimsc4 · 04/04/2026 20:44

You’ll be fine getting it at that BMI, some do off label above 25, you just might be restricted to fewer prescribers.

Zempy · 04/04/2026 20:46

Yes, it absolutely did put me off alcohol

SweetChilliGirl · 04/04/2026 20:48

My BMI was just 30 - after a large meal and a pint of water. It's now 21 and I am titrating down very slowly. I have barely had a drink since starting mj. I'm just not interested and more. I bought some kombucha from Loving Foods and have one on a Friday and one on a Saturday night instead.

Jackrabbit22 · 04/04/2026 21:21

Unfortunately for me it didn't put me off wine at all, I wish it had!

HeidiLite · 04/04/2026 21:25

yes it did. I was very much 'oh it's Friday, let's open a bottle' kind of drinker. No desire to do that . I now only have a glass on social occasions.

Hard to say as l wasn't much of a drinker but l haven't once fancied a drink - think l am scared it will make me nauseous- am only on jab number 3 so still early days

Itscoldouthere · 05/04/2026 09:49

It did to start with, which was great as I was drinking too much, however my desire has slowly crept back and I now feel I’m drinking more than I’d like again, which is disappointing as it does make keeping the weight off harder, I’m in maintenance and have to keep on top of the gains.

Brugmansia · 05/04/2026 12:05

I'm very similar to you OP. When I started I needed to lose 2 stone to get back into a healthy weight. I've lost small amounts in the past and diet wise I'm not bad and eat quite well, though am not great with portion control. Empty wine calories has been my biggest problem. I decided to to WLI because I read that they could help reduce alcohol noise too.

I have lost weight, but very slowly. I'm 1 stone down since July. Unfortunately it's not massively affected alcohol noise for me, so having to rely on straight forward willpower still for that and work on changing my habits. The jabs have helped though with portion control and consistency with food.

ReasonablyInefficient · 05/04/2026 17:02

For me the alcohol noise went completely from the start. I used to drink about 4 bottles of wine a week and now I don’t even think about it. Not buying wine has balanced out the cost of the mounjaro. I’m on 2.5 mg at the moment, been on it for 5 months, and I never went higher than 5 mg which I took for only one month. It’s allowed my liver to have a rest and it’s also helped with the 2 st weight loss (12st to 10st, 5ft 6). I’m maintaining now and hope to reduce the dose further over the next couple of months. I’m hoping that taking it down really slowly before coming off it will give me a chance to see if the alcohol noise comes back - I used to crave it early in the evening, and made my bad food decisions if I drank. I also mainly only drank at home. I never had food noise really, and I think it was the alcohol that piled the pounds on me in the last 10 years post menopause, and it started to slow me down. I’ve had a taste of wine from my partner’s glass a few times, thought it tasted the same as usual, but had no interest in having any more. My mind has felt peaceful with regards to alcohol - that’s the only way I can describe it really.
