I have just started looking into this.
I have a lot to lose, at least 5 stone, so I thought WLI might give me a good start.

But I looked on Boots website and it seems to start from £180 a month and increases as you up the dose.
Is this right?

Is this what everyone is paying?

There is no way on earth I could ever afford that.
Or did I read the information incorrectly?

I’m up a 15mg, it’s costing about £300pm and I’m happy to pay it to keep my health conditions under control.
But lots of people do shop around and change providers so it’s worth doing that if you want to save some money there.
I haven’t really noticed a decline in my shopping bill as I still have a family of 4 other people to cook for and still go out to eat lots but I barely drink at all these days so I’m not going on boozy nights out which must be saving a bit. Not notably though (or maybe this saving has just been swallowed up by the increase in everything else!).

That's how it's been for me! Shopping is about the same as pre MJ, which considering how much things have gone up and the fact that DC are getting older means I'm buying less than I would. It doesn't offset the full costs by any means, but a few pounds a week can be the difference between affording and not for some.

RudolfsLeftToe · 03/04/2026 16:54

I started on wegovy as it was the cheaper option and it’s worked well for me so far. I’m 6 weeks in and I’ve lost 20 pounds and have another 20 to lose to get to my goal.
You can shop around to find discounts but think it’ll end up as roughly £100-£115 per month.

perimenopoppet · 03/04/2026 16:59

”people are just jealous because they are wimps and have to do everything by the book” is the funniest insult I’ve seen on this board yet - aimed at those of us warning it might not be a smart plan to buy and inject unregulated medication bought down the pub, from your nail salon or ‘off of TikTok’ 😂

I actually don’t do it at all by the book, I guess we all have our lines - mine is I only use medicine from a legal source of a guaranteed known concentration, using a dose I’ve calculated and understood myself.

Crack on with your dodgy black market stuff if it’s worth the risk to you, but don’t kid yourself that there aren’t massively higher risks, and stop promoting it on here!

Stopthatknocking · 03/04/2026 17:09

Thanks everyone.

There is no way I have that sort of money, so I won't be doing this.
I certainly won't buy dodgy stuff off the Internet.

So I'll stick to old fashioned dieting I guess.

Hopefully the price goes down op. It will in time as more come to market and yes don’t take the illegal stuff, which is always fine till it’s not, and it just takes one injection. You’d think they’d learn from the deaths and life limiting impacts some people have had. All who were fine till it wasn’t.

Have a look at www.monj.co.uk - it's a comparison site and you can look at all the various discounted costs.

You can also shop around each time you buy to get the best offers

If you think about what you will save in not buying food (very little food since you won't be able to eat it) it evens out.

Surely you could ask your GP if you have five stone to lose.

You need a BMI > 40 and 4 out of 5 specific health conditions to be eligible for WLI through GP / NHS.

Graygoose3 · 03/04/2026 17:40

I'm paying £325 a month
I've lost 11 stone
Worth every penny

I am spending much more on food. Chicken/prawns/fish/steak/seeds/nuts/berries etc are all much much more expensive than pasta/rice/bread centred meals.

It has still been worth every penny, although I would have probably been put off starting if I first saw the prices post price hike.

My bmi is high enough, but I have none of the conditions that you need to be eligible. I think there are 3 or 4 and you need to have at least 1 of them to qualify on the nhs.

I can't imagine I'll save that much on food, you do still have to eat something!

If you try wegovy then it’s about £100 per month for the lower dose through boots and you may be able to get it cheaper through other pharmacy’s. It’s very hard to describe how you will also save money because it really depends on your habits and where you currently spend your money but I honestly think it would be fairly easy to save £100 off your spending as a direct result of the jabs. Eg you will be eating a starter rather than a main if you eat out, most people completely go off alcohol and you can swap drinks you previously craved for tap water, not snacking and a usual portion of chilli would prob last 3/4 meals. You probably won’t fancy that chip shop visit because you will prefer something like beans on toast. There’s also the reduction in other spending because it works on your reward centre so if buying clothes for eg previously hit your reward centre then you just won’t be bothered with it. I think it’s something you have to try (following medical advice) to really understand how it works for you.

Junmaro · 03/04/2026 20:21

You could try it to start and see. As others have explained, the starting price for the low dose is more like £130. You might be lucky and be one of the ones who’s sensitive and not need to go to higher doses which do cost much more. Even if you aren’t, you’d have a head start on the your diet.

The other thing that can save money is split dosing, where you buy a bigger pen than you need but only use half of it so it lasts twice as long. Not saying you should do this, but once you’re up and running on a lower dose pen, you will become more confident with what you are and aren’t confident doing.

In my area you can also get wegovy by going to the gp for a health course / gym referral which you have to do over 12 weeks and then asking for a referral to Oviva.

It was too late for me by the time I found out as my BMI was below the cut off but a friend of mine is currently on wegovy through Oviva and another is currently doing a healthy living course with free 12 week gym/swim membership and has lost a stone in 6 weeks or so. The second friend wants to avoid the injections if possible and has been told that they can extend the free gym membership for another 12 weeks (so 6 months in total).

If you cant afford the injections privately and don't meet the criteria for your gp to prescribe then it is still worth speaking to your gp to see what help they can offer.

Good luck!

Willpower it is then.

Flannelfeet · 03/04/2026 21:54

Not everyone has to go up to the highest dose to loose weight. I done 2.5 for the first month then 5 for 4 months, think i only paid 2 months of that when the increase started in September then I went back to 2.5 in December. I had 3 stone to loose 13st 9 was my start. Im still taking 2.5 but hit my goal of 10st 9 at the end of December so im doing the maintenance, although im still loosing some months im flitting between 10.4 (today when I weighed) and 10st 7. Quite happy to keep doing the 2.5 for now, but if i go below 10st im going to need to stop. I cant figure out a way to keep taking it but stay at 10st 7.

MeridaBrave · 03/04/2026 22:08

I use a 5mg but make it last 2 months, so it’s £80 a month. But yes some people need a higher dose.

WorriedRelative · 03/04/2026 22:36

alspancakeworld · 03/04/2026 15:00

It’s not what everyone is paying. Most of us aren’t getting it from pharmacies OP. My bottle of semaglutide lasts months At £50 for the bottle. Obviously you have to be careful about who is supplying it but I’m only saying it to make my point that not everyone is going weekly for their injections and paying that price.

That's illegal drugs bought from a criminal.

Why so much. Assume on 15

you can get it £266/270 without discounts

so saving least £50 a month

Peony1985 · 04/04/2026 21:22

Op I agree with the people saying buy a month or two as a kick start.
It will be more motivating to diet having lost a stone already.
Also you said you wouldn’t save much on shopping because “ you still have to eat”. It will be good for you to see how much money you save by not prioritising eating, over nutrition.

It depends where you live. They won’t post out to NI so you’re left with only a couple of options.
