Mounjaro and holidays

Elizabeth49 · 24/03/2026 16:08

I am off on holiday next week. Not all inclusive, just self catering, but we will definitely be eating out.

I went up to 5mg two weeks ago.

Do I either go down to 2.5mg for the holiday or skip a week?

I would love to know what others have done. Thanks.

Why would you do either?

AmythestBangle · 24/03/2026 16:09

why not just carry on with your 5mg?

Summerbay23 · 24/03/2026 16:16

I’ve been on it almost a year and have stayed on my normal dose when on holiday. It hasn’t really changed my enjoyment of food/wine, I’ve probably just made better choices and not gone overboard like I may have in the past. With self catering it’s even easier as I just stick to a lot of my usual meals.

SilenceInside · 24/03/2026 16:17

Just carry on as normal with your normal dose. That's what I've done for every holiday that I've been on whilst taking Mounjaro. You can go out to eat, you'll just eat a bit less and/or choose different things.

Dozycuntlaters · 24/03/2026 16:18

Ive just come back from 10 days all inclusive - I took my MJ as normal. If you skip a week, you are giving yourself the green light to go mad - why would you do that? Just enjoy yourself, let loose a little bit whilst still being mindful. Holidays are about damage limitation!

WorriedRelative · 24/03/2026 17:09

I just carry on as normal, I don't increase while on holiday or immediately before though. I have jabbed a day late to avoid taking my pen for a one week trip.

Don't skip or reduce, as some people have reported reduced effect afterwards.

RedApplePie · 24/03/2026 17:13

I’ve decided just to carry on as normal. I will move my jab day by 24 hours as day 3 for me is always a bit of a toilet lottery and don’t want to deal with that if the seat belt signs are on! But otherwise don’t want to sabotage myself in any way.

MCR24 · 24/03/2026 17:15

Neither, I'd carry on as normal.

RockChik · 24/03/2026 21:37

I went overseas for four weeks and didn’t take it with me because I couldn’t keep it cold. I’m glad I didn’t because I only put on a couple of pounds despite eating and drinking loads! I never take it with me now.

Once you’ve opened it, you don’t need to keep it cold. It’s fine for 30 days at 30C

Dooodaaaaadooo · 25/03/2026 00:04

I went to Australia for three weeks and didn't take it, didn't want to faff around at customs with needles etc .I didn't put on any weight because I was walking thousands of steps a day exploring.
I ate what I wanted and enjoyed many cool beers.

IsItSnowing · 25/03/2026 10:15

I always take mine and try to jab as near to normal as possible. Sometimes a day early or late if it's not practical to take it on the normal day.
It's part of my routine and I don't find it too much of an inconvenience. I make sure it's an open pen though as this is so much easier than worrying about keeping it cold when on a road trip or whatever.

It was over 30° where I was and I didn’t have access to a fridge.

@Elizabeth49 , all the way through my weight loss journey I just carried on taking the dose I was on during my holidays. I came to realise quite soon that actually I had been wrong to believe that overeating and drinking were integral to my enjoyment of my holidays and in any case I wasn’t one of those people for whom the weight just dropped off and I didn’t want the mental anguish of putting weight on.
We’re all different but from the start it was important for me to be aiming towards a healthy and sustainable attitude to food/drinks that I was going to continue for the rest of my life. I don’t intend ever to stop taking this medication but for those that do it is especially important to learn a new more healthy and balanced approach to what they eat and drink because the sad reality is that most people who lose weight on these drugs and stop taking them will put all or most of their weight back on.
Im sorry that I haven’t answered your specific question because I did neither option you’ve offered.

MeridaBrave · 25/03/2026 11:25

I didn’t want to take it with so I took an early dose before we left and a late dose on returning. Was happy to eat less just didn’t want to have it in the fridge where teenage DC could see it.

Exactly this. Eating and drinking less has to be the way you live now, on holiday or at home, if you want to keep the weight off.

It has been extremely freeing though, to realise that it doesn’t matter. Total mindset change. It might help to realise that you can really, actively enjoy the fresher, healthier choices. The drug will help you keep your portion size in control, so don’t worry too much on that score.

There is zero reason to drop a dose or miss one out - why would you?

HeidiLite · 25/03/2026 11:48

I have never skipped a dose and it hasn't hampered my holiday enjoyment. The enjoyable part for me is not to eat and drink as much as possible, but as much as I want, and MJ of course helps to want less.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 25/03/2026 12:19

I'm coming up to 2 years on MJ now and have been on multiple holidays. I always take my pen with me and don't alter the dose.
For a short break, then if feasible, I tweak my injection day to avoid taking it with me.
My side effects are varied, but not severe, and if I have a day when I don't fancy any food, then I don't eat, just like I would at home.
I am working on a long-term plan and the rest of my life, not a quick fix to drop a dress size or 2, eating smaller and fewer meals, with better food choices, is what I want to do; I don't want or need to binge and overeat just because I am on holiday.
I have just spent 2 weeks touring in Asia on an organised tour with most meals included, it was not an issue to eat small amounts and to focus on protein and veg/fruits.
I have also done self-catering trips, which are my preference as you can choose what to eat and when.

Wickedlittledancer · 25/03/2026 12:24

I just stayed on for me this was a lifetime change so stopping or dropping so I could consume as before on holiday didn’t fit into this. I could and did still enjoy food, and didn’t want to go on hols and consume as I used to.

Binus · 25/03/2026 16:00

Like others, I don't get why it has to be 2.5 or nothing.

I've had one holiday on 2.5 and one holiday on 5, and both were absolutely fine. Ate and drank a bit more than usual, and I think gained a pound or two on each occasion which came right back off.

Elizabeth49 · 25/03/2026 16:17

Thanks everyone. I hadn't actually considered staying on 5mg. As a lot of you have said I need to change my mindset with holidays and food.

I went on a caribbean cruise 3 weeks after starting MJ and skipped two jabs whilst away. The reason being the jabs were making me feel fuzzy/nauseous for the first couple of days after jabbing, so I didn't want the holiday affected. I started back as soon as I got home and had no detrimental effects, and didn't eat or drink a great deal more whilst away. So I found stopping temporarily worked fine for me.

Fishingboatbobbingnight · 31/03/2026 20:18

I went to Central America for a month and just took it with me. It simply made me make better choices and prioritise protein and fibre. It was quite easy as the food was not great tbh .. a bit more challenging 2 months later in SE Asia for two months where the food was lush. I ate absolutely everything I wanted to - just in smaller portions. I have never felt deprived.

indiedancer · 05/04/2026 20:45

Don't jump on the scales straight after a holiday! A lot of the time that extra weight is just water retention and a bit of inflammation from all the travelling. Give yourself five or six days to let things settle back down
