I’ve started on 2.5mg of mounjaro and I lost 2lb first week, 3lb second week (I think my period impacted the bigger loss) I haven’t weighed this week yet but need to decide whether to stay at 2.5mg or move to 5mg this week.

I am struggling a bit with side effects, most of the time fine, but I am having some horrible bouts of nausea that pass quickly and I can usually pin point what I have done to cause it. My appetite is definitely suppressed.

I KNOW I need to stay at 2.5mg, and 5mg will likely be an unnecessarily rough transition considering I am losing well, but the thing that’s holding me back is if I suddenly stall and regret not going up a level. I have a holiday in May so I guess I’m worried about delaying loss (sorry that sounds so vain, obviously I’m doing this for health but it’s a particularly big holiday and I am very enticed at the thought of not hating having my photograph taken…)

Anyway I know I’m being daft, can I have some reassurance that if 2.5mg seems to be working well for me that it’s worth sticking it out another month? Anyone had similar and managed to maintain momentum?

Stay on 2.5mg. You’re losing weight and doing well. You might not feel very good on the bigger dose so soon after starting, plus it seems unnecessary to me personally

likelysuspect · 14/02/2026 20:27

Worse thing you can do is try to 'calendar' your weight loss.

Just carry on carrying on. Your holiday will come and go and then there'll be another holiday

You just carry on

How about getting the 5mg pen which is the usual beginner therapeutic dose. 2.5 mg is just the starter introduction dose I believe. Then just deliver a half dose from it, that's 30 clicks and see how you go. You can then increase on week 6 if that feels ok. I am not a doctor.

wantmorenow · 14/02/2026 20:38

Lot's of us have chosen to move up more slowly. E.g. 45 clicks to a 3.75mg dose suited me for weeks 5 and 6.

Yes this was something I had considered because it’s financially more practical to buy the larger pen (another hesitation I suppose, to spend over £200 on something that stalls loss) do people essentially clean and reuse the heads?

You’re being daft. Stay on 2.5. It’s working!! The only thing 5mg will give you is more side effects & then you’ll feel ill and not fuel your body properly.

whatnexxt · 14/02/2026 20:44

You need to consider what you are eating, that is the most important factor. Are you in a calorie defecit? Eating healthy foods? If so then I wouldn’t go up. I have been on 2.5mg for over a year.

SENsupportplease · 14/02/2026 20:45

Buy the more expensive pens but count clicks to stay on 2.5 until it doesn’t work as well

FourSevenTwo · 14/02/2026 20:50

Stay on 2,5 for another month. There's a good chance it will keep working for you for now and you don't want to deal with heavier side effect unnecessarily.

MrLarsonsNailGun · 14/02/2026 20:51

Don’t reuse needles, dispose straight away, buy yourself a job lot of spares, they’re really cheap and much safer.

Honestly if I were you I would just follow the programme as instructed, you have had a great start and 2.5mg is working well. Take it for the remaining two weeks and see if you feel up for the 5mg, I went up month on month to 7.5mg, which was effective enough for me to stay there throughout my weight loss and the best trade off with side effects (headaches and nausea with actual sickness).

SilenceInside · 14/02/2026 20:55

The pen needles are single use, as PP has said you can buy loads for a few pounds from online pharmacies like UK Medi or others.

wantmorenow · 14/02/2026 20:56

Do not reuse needles. I had six supplied with each pen as standard, if you need more you can buy them from a pharmacist.

xhddhsg · 14/02/2026 20:58

Thanks so much duly noted on the needles! I will see what I weigh on Weds (that’s my weigh in day) and I will decide whether to ask to remain on 2.5mg, or get the larger pen and additional needles for ‘insurance’.

Either way I am firmly assured not to progress to injecting 5mg yet.

@xhddhsg a 2.5 or 5mg does not have to cost over £200. You can get a 2.5mg pen for just over £100 from several pharmacies, and 5mg for £130 to £150 pounds. Check https://monj.co.uk for a price comparison and current new customer discounts,

xhddhsg · 14/02/2026 21:05

Yeah I’ve started with Voy which seems to be a pricier one, just sticking with them for now but will absolutely shop around when I have a clearer idea of what my longer term plan is.

OP posts:
SilenceInside · 14/02/2026 21:07

I wouldn’t stick with them if I could get exactly the same product for half the price. But I’ve never used Voy so maybe they offer something that makes up for the price!

xhddhsg · 14/02/2026 21:12

No it’s a fair point! I think it’s just because I wanted to use a brand I was familiar with (a friend recommended) not sure if I’m tied in for 3 months now, either way happy to stick for 3 months but will absolutely shop around after that, that’s a crazy price difference!

Would anybody be able to link to some replacement needles please? Tried googling and not having much luck.

Imisscoffee2021 · 14/02/2026 21:15

Its way healthier for your liver and gallbladder to lose weight at the rate you are and rushing into a higher dose may not be sustainable weight loss.

Giwingpat · 14/02/2026 21:17

Get the 5 pen and go up gradually or use the 5 pen to last you 10 weeks at 2.5, buy extra needles from UK medi.
As a PP poster said no way would I stay loyal, like throwing money away, easy to swap and for exact same thing.

SilenceInside · 14/02/2026 21:19

I usually get 6 pen needles with each pen, as your pharmacy should be giving you a couple spare at least, in case you get a duff one or attach it badly and need to re try, as per the pen instructions.

xhddhsg · 14/02/2026 21:20

Perfect thanks so much.

Taking all comments on board, I’m going to take it steady. You’ve given my head the wobble I was seeking!

Voy don’t sadly, I only got 4 with this pen.

Was just about to post the above link, I'd get some insulin syringes for the golden dose while your at it, bad of them to only provide 4,the only company who did that when I was buying from a pharmacy was your medicals who were crap, would have thought better of voy.
