Liquid left in pen

I have just had my fourth dose of my first pen of mounjaro, and there is still liquid in the pen. It looks like almost enough for another dose. Is that normal? I dont want to just throw it away!

@ShawnaMacallister that's a ridiculous argument. I have a repeat prescription that delivers a pen every four weeks, because that's the dosage in the pen.

It's not an argument, it's a fact. There is an entire dose worth of medication left; you're binning it; ergo it's being wasted. I appreciate you aren't obliged to take it and it's not your choice how often the medication is delivered to you or how much they put in a pen but the fact remains.

I can't believe people bin the extra dose. That's £50+ wasted.

Logically I pay for 4 doses and I take 4 doses so I don’t consider it anything of the sort

They are moving to smaller pens so there wont be a 'golden dose' soon anyway.

I pay and don’t use the extra liquid. It doesn’t sit right with me, but I don’t really care if others use it.

Tammy214 · 05/01/2026 11:33

I think its a choice, i can see why financially people are looking to stretch where they can, however its not really wastage. its designed to be used for the 4 weeks, thats what your paying for.
I stick with the 4 and i budget for that, its not cheap but for me its an investment and am prefering to use it as specified.

I've used the 5th dose each and every time. I bought syringes from amazon. This stuff is expensive and I'm not throwing 20% of it away every month. That would be madness IMO.

SilenceInside · 05/01/2026 11:44

Over the course of the 18 months or so that I've been using Mounjaro, I've used the remaining medication at least 12 times, which has saved me from buying at least 3 additional pens. So that's around £450 to £750 saved depending on dose and whether it would have been before or after the price rise in Sept 24.

In terms of going against what's advised/specified, to me it's a very limited issue as the medication is in date for the 5th dose and it's exactly the same medication as the previous 4 doses. I am competent at using a syringe to extract, buy them from a reputable supplier, and understand the risks and issues of using them. I am also happy that I am mathematically competent enough to work out the dose. So for me personally it makes total sense to use the remaining medication to save money.

My pen came with 5 needle tips - if I force the pen should I be able to use it normally? Or will the actual pen not work after dose 4

Or could you click more times on your 4th dose to get a boost?

The mechanism will not continue clicking after 4 doses. You may be able to force it round but equally you may break the pen if you try. Much safer to use a syringe.
