Liquid left in pen

I have just had my fourth dose of my first pen of mounjaro, and there is still liquid in the pen. It looks like almost enough for another dose. Is that normal? I dont want to just throw it away!

It's normal.

It’s called the golden dose and not recommended to be used. Some people, myself included have purchased single needles from Amazon and withdrew it manually for use. This is quite tricky however the needle is longer and you need a firm grip and be brave to administer. I’ve stopped as I couldn’t cope with the needle.

Yes it’s normal. It’s what you might have seen referred to on social media or on here as a “bonus” dose or a “golden” dose. I dislike that twee language personally.

You can’t access the left over medication normally as the pen locks after doing 4 normal doses. You can try to forcibly twist the pen again, past it’s locking point. If it releases, then you can do another dose as normal. But it can be hard to force it like this, and sometimes the whole internal mechanism breaks and the pen no longer functions. So, you can instead buy 1ml syringes from an online pharmacy, and use those to manually extract the medication. If you do that you need to be ok with working out what amount you need for a normal dose (0.6ml), and doing a subcutaneous injection with a syringe.

Yes that is the bonus or golden dose. It is really extra liquid for priming etc. It is not recommended by the manufacturers but a lot of people on here use it as an extra dose to keep the costs down. You will need an insulin syringe to get it out as the pens stop working after four doses.

Use it then! It's an entire extra dose. You just need some needles and to extract it yourself, it's extremely easy.

I just bought the syringes recommend on numerous threads on here - easy peasy to extract and inject the last dose. Seemed criminal to me to waste it.

Its the 5th dose. Use an insulin syringe to withdraw its enough for a 5th dose. I have used MJ for 12 months and lost 7 stone and always used the 5th dose.

But you don’t have to waste it, you can choose to use it, lots of treads here showing links to syringes to extract, it really is easy, I know some don’t use but I feel like it’s just throwing good meds/money away.
They do plan to take the extra dose out so at some point, probably this year, then it will no longer be an option, but whilst it’s still there it is available to you and is still being used within the 30 days if you are worried about that.

Use it. 5 weeks instead of 4. No brainer.. get some syringes i use uk medi website to order. There will be a bit over a full dose. 0.6ml is a full dose. Anymore will just mean a stronger dose taken.

I can't believe people bin the extra dose. That's £50+ wasted.

I’ve always just twisted the top in my teeth 😂 it forces it to release another dose then inject as normal. Takes some strength but it’s worked for me for the last 14 months!

Not with my teeth but I have successfully used a set of pliers to force it. Haven't actually used the dose though.

I don't pay for mine.

I'm not buying syringes and faffing around to try and make a pen last longer when I can get a new one every four weeks.

Well most people do have to pay unfortunately so it is worth 'the faff'.

Yes it’s normal I use that extra dose every single time with no issues. Always have done.

Well, when north of £180 is coming out of my bank account every month - damn right I'm getting my money's worth!

I completely understand that, but I was responding to the poster who said I was effectively binning £50 by not using the syringe method for an additional dose.

The OP didn't say if she was paying for her prescription or getting it on the NHS

Well you're binning the valuable medication it's just being paid for by the taxpayer rather than you!

For those posters who use their teeth, please don't! You may end up spending more at the dentist than you save on MJ!
Like previous posters I buy extra syringes from UK Medi. They're cheap and very easy to use.

@ShawnaMacallister that's a ridiculous argument. I have a repeat prescription that delivers a pen every four weeks, because that's the dosage in the pen.
