Putting on weight to get WLI

Anyone else trying to gain weight so that doctors will prescribe weight loss jabs? I’m 1 stone under the requirement and tempted to just stuff myself over Xmas and then be able to start injections in Jan.

Presumably OP is struggling to do this, hence she wants the jabs. Dont be so glib.

OP, I agree it’s frustrating and wrong that you aren’t allowed the jabs, I’m in a simaikr position where I am crippled by and miserable with food noise but don’t have the BMI to get them prescribed. but I don’t think it’s a good idea for all the reasons people have mentioned

Not glib at all. It's the sensible and healthy alternative.

KitsyWitsy · 03/12/2025 15:43

It's easy to get them without actually qualifying properly. Try Numan. They don't do due diligence.

Oh good grief for a stone just take an inch or two off your height and add a few kilos

putting weight on is madness!!!

Allmarbleslost · 03/12/2025 15:48

Seems like an odd thing to do op. Sounds like you don't actually have much weight to lose if you'd need to put a stone on to qualify? I'm on mounjaro and 5 stone down with another 2 to go. I wouldn't pay for jabs if I only had a small amount of weight to lose.

MeridaBrave · 03/12/2025 15:56

What’s your BMI?

If it’s over 27 maybe say you have PCOS. 1 stone is a lot to gain. If it’s around 25 then you don’t need WLI.

i honestly cannot believe you think it’s that simple. I bet you also tell people with depression to cheer up

No I don't because we have a family member with mental ill health and know how desperate and serious it can be.

Losing weight isn't simple, but it is doable. I've lost three stone myself in the last year so I know it's hard work. If you read my post again you'll see I said "Or you could spend the month trying to lose some weight."

Seems much more sensible than trying to put it on for so many reasons.

There’s a lot of holier than thou people on this thread. I had a BMI of 27/28, was miserable with food noise and being overweight. I got Mounjaro with Voy on the basis I have other health conditions (in this case long-standing back problems). The back pain was nothing to do with my weight but the questionnaire didn’t ask if it was. Other illnesses that could qualify you were depression, knee pain, high cholesterol IIRC. Anyhow, I got prescribed the jabs with no issue (and they never contacted my GP or asked for details of them) and I’ve lost three stone. I’m now with another provider and staying on the jabs for maintenance.

Yes, you might be unlikely and they don’t work for you or give you awful side effects but hopefully they’ll help. If I were you I’d try and get prescribed on the basis of a 27/28 BMI and other condition, rather than having to gain more weight.

inmyhea · 03/12/2025 19:52

I really wouldn’t. I’ve gone on them because my weight would not stop going up and I was desperate to get a hold of it as I was obese. I wouldn’t be eating more to get myself obese! The jabs aren’t an easy way out, it’s a serious medication with risks attached.

We are discussing for weight loss. You may have further info and the op is diabetic and wishes it for that purpose. But all we can see is her op which indicates it’s for weight loss which is a different criteria.

I was responding to your point about it being impossible to get MJ prescribed on the NHS unless you have a BMI above 40 plus several conditions, including diabetes. My point was that diabetes alone is enough to secure a prescription depending on the circumstances.

SilenceInside · 03/12/2025 20:11

T2 diabetes alone isn't sufficient to be prescribed Mounjaro for weight loss only. You would need to be in the position of not having your blood sugars under control despite using other T2 diabetes medication first. Then it could be prescribed for blood sugar control, not weight loss. So, a pretty specific set of circumstances which is clearly not what everyone else was referring to, which is the recently announced rollout of Mounjaro specifically for weight loss by GPs/local services without needing a Tier 3 specialist weight loss service referral. That started in the summer, but only for people with BMI of 40plus and 4 out of 5 weight related health conditions.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 03/12/2025 13:25

My practice prescribed for me. I had a BMI of just over 27 (I'm white Caucasian) and the only condition I have is Diabetes. However I'd tried various diabetes medications and my BS was still very high.

My GP and my Diabetes nurse are amazingly supportive

So you were prescribed it for your diabetes then, not weight loss.

värskekapsas · 03/12/2025 20:32

i have tried medication twice but side effects were horrendous so I had to stop both times. So I think your plan may back fire if you cant tolerate meds but you already put so much weight on

Diabetes is the only way to “ score it” other than the heavy criteria listed, again if the op was wanting it for diabetes, I’m fairly sure she’d not be wanting to stuff herself, and would have mentioned it. 😂

Knee pain sounds like something it would be easy to claim to have. After all, how is anyone going to prove that your knees DON'T hurt?

I wouldn't go putting on weight deliberately, but I do get why people might want to find their way round the cookie-cutter criteria. My BMI was 33 in the spring, since reduced to 28 with a low-carb diet. Once it hit 30, I had to ask myself some serious questions about whether I was happy to stay low-carb in the long term. Because if not, then that was the moment when I needed to look for weight loss jabs, before I dieted my way out of eligibility. It's a bit of a weird decision to have to make based just on a BMI number, which in itself is going to be affected by your build and muscle tone.

Huuny · 04/12/2025 00:10

blankcanvas3 · 03/12/2025 09:34

This is so unhealthy. The jabs aren’t for you, so don’t take them. Just spend the time trying to lose weight

Just spend the time trying to lose weight

Now, where have I heard that before...?

elliejjtiny · 04/12/2025 01:34

Don't you have to have a lot of health problems to get it prescribed by the gp? I have a bmi of 49 but can't get WLI because I don't have diabetes and my blood pressure, cholesterol etc are all fine. So I am doing it the old fashioned way. 3.5 stone down, 7.5 stone to go.
