I stopped Wegovy and it’s all piled back on. What now?

I was using Wegovy for about 18 months and had already started to see the effects wear off on the highest dose, having lost about 12 kg, down from 93kg. I’ve never had will power and once previously had lost 19kg (but during Covid) before that all went back on again too.

I’m wondering about starting Mounjarno. But I guess then I could end up back in the same situations in another year’s time.

Reason’s to be positive which might mean that won’t happen: 1) I had a miserable job which I’ve now quit so could in theory comfort eat less. 2) I never got down to the target weight where I really would have felt good about myself 3) There was general upheaval at home so I didn’t form new habits. I know this needs to happen.

Any thoughts?

Same happened to me. Lost 6 stone on mounjaro, have put on 2. Have just ordered wegovy!

DenDenDenise · 15/09/2025 14:14

Did you track calories, and eat a balanced diet with enough drinks during the day ? I think when we are on WLI's, and loose the weight, we really must keep to our daily calorie limit - and develop good habits going forward,

Cuzco · 15/09/2025 14:15

Argh, I just don’t think I can justify the cost for the rest of eternity. It had become quite a stretch.

I did initially, but then I stopped. I also (naively) hoped that doing without biscuits and chocolate for so long might have quelled my innate cravings but apparently not. I just don’t have an ‘off’ button for them.
I did do militant calorie counting when I lost 19kg during Covid, but I wasn’t having to run round after kids, work etc. I could do it again but perhaps set a more realistic daily target and then bring it down.

It is a medication for the long-term. Wegovy has got cheaper for the moment.

Don’t beat yourself up about not forming new habits. It’s very hard to fight the hunger that comes along when you come off these drugs some people seem to be able to do it but I think for most people weight gain is very likely.

Agree with this. You have to count calories, everyday, unless you’re having a deliberate treat day. I stopped the WLI having been on for 4 months as I couldn’t tolerate the constant low energy. Now I stay at about 1400 calories for 5 days and have 500 calories the other 2 (but not consecutive). You have to chose food mindfully, it really is the only way.

I gained weight over 5 years due to family ill health and 3 deaths in close succession, but now feel my emotional eating is under control. So hopefully with less stress OP this may be the same for you. Good luck.

Interesting comment about it being for the long term. When I last looked into it, I think it was two years max suggested. If it’s still working, then I’d be prepared to find the money for longer, but as the effects had eased off anyway, I wasn’t sure which way to go.

BackToWegovy · 15/09/2025 14:28

I think the effects seem to wear off when you get to a lower weight because your body is fighting back harder. I have found I’ve got to a certain weight and then maintained rather than lost anymore and been a bit hungrier than I had been, but if I stop taking it I get very hungry and gain weight very quickly.

Weepixie · 15/09/2025 14:31

Op, just get back on that horse and this time start practicing on day one for the rest of your life as a skin person. You really do have to change your habits!

Bulldogautumn · 15/09/2025 14:43

I've lost 8 stone on monjroro
But I track my calories, and did for a long time before I started the medication.so I knew what calories I needed to eat to loose weight on ,and it was incredibly low .
So I've never gone over 1200 a day in the last year .
So I know if I come of monjroro and eat more calories the weight will return
If that happens
I have only myself to blame
I don't know anything about wavyego so it might be different with that .
But that's what worked for me
But you definitely definitely do have to be in the right frame of mind ..I spent a year thinking about injections and making sure I was ready to totally change my whole diet

Bulldogautumn · 15/09/2025 14:46

I also swim for 45 minutes every day ,.you need to exercise to

Cuzco · 15/09/2025 15:01

Right well, I think I’m going to do it. Back to Wegovy or try Mounjarno? Any discount codes around? I’ve been out of this for a while.

How did you adjust your diet and activity levels whilst you were taking the medication?

If you didn't... then obviously the weight will go back on.

Enrichetta · 15/09/2025 15:15

Healthy Mediterranean diet, keeping within calorific limits.
“Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.
Stay clear of sugar, refined carbs, alcohol, UPF.
Exercise every day, including weights.
Walk as much as possible; consider wearing a weighted vest.

MotherTuckinGenius · 15/09/2025 15:40

WLI’s aren’t a magic bullet - you have to put the work in and overhaul your eating habits for ever. No point using them and laying out all that money if you’re just going to binge on crap once you’ve got to goal.

WFHforevermore · 15/09/2025 15:45

If you go back to the habits that made you fat in the first place, then you'll have to stay on meds for your whole life.

Or maybe change your habits.

I did, and i havent put the weight on.

Ive just started wegovy, can refer you as a friend to get £50 off ypur first pen at chequp. I found them to be the cheapest even without the discount and service has been very good. Send me a dm if you'd like me to refer you :)

BackToWegovy · 15/09/2025 16:03

I think Mounjaro is a bit better but more expensive especially now. Have a look at the prices and see what you think. Did Wegovy work well before? I have done both but went back to Wegovy due to side effects on Mounjaro in the end but had some good months on Mounjaro first.

TheTealGoose · 15/09/2025 16:18

You said 2 things in your posts; needing to form new habits and to set a realistic daily target and then bring it down. It sounds like you know what to do.

Remember this is just an old habit coming back so no judgement for slipping. What have you learned? The success is in consistency so that means getting back in to the groove as soon as possible. There are always going to be setbacks; it's how you deal with them. Success is consistency over time not perfect adherence. You will soon pick up momentum again.

Personally I find the Half Size Me podcast and academy a useful resource. Coach Heather shares experience working with clients (including using weight loss medication) with a focus on sustainability. She lost over 100lbs and has maintained this loss for over 10 years.

I believe in you 🌟

Orangesandlemons77 · 15/09/2025 16:30

OP I am nearly at maintenance after losing 5 stone on Mounjaro over a year, still not at a healthy weight yet though.

I've just changed to wegovy and joined a gym with a pool. I'm planning on swimming and continuing on a lowish dose of wegovy but keeping the habits like intermittent fasting going along with the exercise.

So far just been doing this 2 weeks but am losing weight similar to mounjaro, I am thinking it could be affordable too if I buy a 1mg pen every 8 weeks, and take half a dose. maybe something like this could work for you?

I'm finding less nausea on wegovy which is a bonus too.

RoundandSad · 15/09/2025 16:30

@Cuzco how long did you stop taking it? So how long did it take to come off and go back on?

I thought about taking it decided against it but go round in circles about it

I am just asking because I'm seeing you need it for life it must change something in your body

Did you keep your old eating habits?

I don't understand if I normally feel rubbish when I reduce my food intake, wouldn't you feel rubbish on the medication and reduced food

It sounds like we just need to put up with hunger I don't know what to do either

ChaosDream · 15/09/2025 16:44

I have used both and feel that mounjaro is more effective, I’d be happy to share a discount code via DM if you decide to take that route

Enrichetta · 15/09/2025 16:46

you won’t feel hungry if you eat sensibly. Mostly plants and a fair bit of protein.

SilenceInside · 15/09/2025 18:34

@RoundandSad Wegovy and Mounjaro don’t permanently change anything in your body, it’s just simply that when you stop taking them they stop having any effects any more. So you can then find it difficult to maintain the weight loss, unless you’ve really embedded permanent changes to your life.

When you take Wegovy/Mounjaro and so reduce your food intake, you don’t feel the same levels of hunger and focus on food that you might when you previously restricted calories. That’s because the medication tells your brain that you’re full and it also regulates your blood sugar which helps with not feeling sugar highs and then slumps afterwards. So you don’t feel as hungry. That’s what helps you to maintain a calorie deficit for long enough to lose significant amounts of weight.

RockChik · 15/09/2025 18:59

@Cuzco I have a 50% off discount code with Voy, DM me if you want it. I’ve found them very good and they offer a personal coach and a lot of support.
