Apparently not - is this in response to so many switching to WeGovy?

caffelattetogo · 28/08/2025 16:53

Or was it a plan to get people to bulk buy stocks?

OP posts:
winterwonder1 · 28/08/2025 16:53

That wouldn't surprise me!

caffelattetogo · 28/08/2025 16:56

Looks like still an increase, but not as much as they first said.

OP posts:
Parksinyork · 28/08/2025 16:57

I don’t think this is news. It was always going to be the case that individual pharamist would negotiate how much they would be able to buy it from the makers for, as they already do. My supplier said they thought it was increase by 30 to 70% for customers but they have yet to release the September prices.

SilenceInside · 28/08/2025 16:58

This is likely about the "rebate" scheme that they will implement, which will see the pharmacies being able to claim a rebate back from Lilly, in arrears. That rebate should be wholly passed on to customers, so reducing the price increase. I think that this rebate will already have been taken into account by those pharmacies that have already published their prices for 1st Sept onwards.

I doubt that Lilly put prices up to force panic buying, given that they were forced to respond to Trump's executive order demanding that they match their US prices with the lowest prices offered in other developed nations eg the UK. So rather than drop US prices, Lilly raised UK prices.

Redlightbulb · 28/08/2025 16:59

I think it is just the rebate which is already factored into the prices that the pharmacies have announced.
The media were just very slow to put it out there that the prices were not going up by 170% as of course it is more of a headline to leave it at that. They are just catching up now.

MisseyLurker · 28/08/2025 17:02

It all depends on the Pharmacy, it was reported that pharmacies were working on deals and rebates so they could keep the costs lower for their patients. The wholesale cost is going up, that is being passed on to us but for the big players, it should mean not such a big increase to their patients.

Some are still to announce their prices and I wonder if they are still waiting to see what the rest do and try to capitalise by enticing patients to them with cheaper costs?

Kipperandarthur · 28/08/2025 17:06

I do think the media hyped this up significantly when they didn't have all the facts to hand. It was the media that was suggesting the top doses were going to be in excess of £450 and £500 each.

Yes the prices have gone up and quite a lot for 12.5 and 15mg, also the middle 7.5 and 10mg, but the lower two doses not so much.

I think there will be more shopping around at the higher doses as the price differential is circa £60 or so for 12.5 and 15mg and those that are selling at circa £330 or so are going to struggle at that price point as others are selling at the £275 bracket.

With the price increases, then the disparity pricing at the top end people will be more choosy with their suppliers when purchasing as they are not going to want to feel they are paying unnecessarily high prices if offered elsewhere for a lower price point.

HansHolbein · 28/08/2025 17:09

Yes, it’s going up. No, they haven’t backed down. This isn’t new news, it’s about the rebate scheme that has likely already been baked in to the price.

We may see some movement in the next couple of months if patients start voting with their feet, though.

What dose are you on OP?

Thebigonesgetaway · 28/08/2025 17:11

I also don’t think this is news, I think it is just what’s leading to the current pricing we are seeing, which is lower than anticipated but still gouging. It’s a huge increase and significantly more than we pay for wegovy, and yes, it’s only 40 quid at lower doses but that’s still a massive percentage increase and a huge monthly cost when you add in postage too. And now they are talking about taking out the fifth dose. It’s jus6 a puff piece link as their reputation is in tatters and they are losing the uk market.

caffelattetogo · 28/08/2025 17:28

It still seems like a massive shifting of goalposts. As someone who has only really dealt with NHS treatment, it’s eye-opening what happens with private providers.

LurkThenPost · 28/08/2025 17:29

Its probably because of Serena Williams. She is promoting weightloss injections at a lower price in America and potential talks about coming to UK (nothing confirmed, just what I read on gossip sites). People are more likely to buy Serena's as she is former athlete etc and plus its cheaper from what I understand. $45 dollars a month..

But it's the manufacturer Eli Lilly that has shifted the goal posts in response to the demands of Donald Trump and the American marketplace.

There must be masses of drug price increases constantly, it's just that when we are prescribed drugs through the NHS system we are unaware of the price points and just pay a prescription charge that in no way reflects the price of the drugs we are being given.

SilenceInside · 28/08/2025 17:35

I think I can say with certainty that it is absolutely nothing to do with Serena Williams. The company she is promoting, Ro, is a US telehealth company that provides various different GLP1 injections for weight loss. If they come into the UK market, they would be supplied for the UK market by Eli Lilly at the same list prices as the current UK pharmacies and so could not supply Mounjaro at a significantly cheaper price than any other supplier.

I think people are cleverer than that and will buy products based on outcomes reported in research studies and price.

I'm not fussed what people buy tbh. I will go for the cheapest option, they all have to follow medical guidelines and pass the same amount of tests.

So you would go for cheapest over the most effcetive? Not judging, just wondering.

In all honesty, depends on the price difference and if I can afford it. It feels like marketing to me with all these different brands and pricing. Budget wise, just depends on what I can afford really.

Vitriolinsanity · 28/08/2025 18:30

I have 3 weeks of MJ left, then I’m switching to Wegovy. I don’t appreciate being held to ransom. If I’m going to do this, I want consistency from a supplier. I also don’t believe the a company the size of Lilly with a giant press office couldn’t have handled this situation better rather than letting the press have a field day leading to panic buying. Even if you take the press frenzy with a shovel of salt, pharmacies have also been publishing the price hike to consumers. Lilly would have been smarter to adjust US prices to the UK rather than the other way round. They would still have been charging more for MJ than Wegovy.

It’s really absolutely not anything to do with Serena Williams. 😂

Because they are selling a huge amount more of their product - much of which will expire before it’s even used. But by then they have the money.

They were not struggling to sell the product?

They certainly weren't struggling to sell their product and the expiry date of all the pens I have are December 2026 so a year plus a third until expiry.
