Awful symptoms on 10mg Mounjaro - what to do next?

I've just started on the 10mg dose of Mounjaro and the first 3 days were horrendous with nausea and constipation. I had to lie in bed for 2 of those days, and take loads of remedies to combat the nausea. It really wiped me out.

I'm now 10 days after taking that dose and I can't bring myself to take the next one but know I need to decided pretty sharpish what I'm going to do next.

Will the second 10mg dose be better? What are other people's experiences?

I was ok on 7.5mg with just mild nagging nausea. Had no idea I'd feel so awful on 10.

Should I downgrade to 7.5mg? I've paid for this pen so it grates to waste it.

Please help me decide what to do. I can't face 3 days of feeling so ill again.

What was happening when you were on 7.5? Were you losing weight and why did you decide to increase to 10?

You certainly don’t need to waste the pen if you decide to take a lower dose. You can just do less clicks to get the dose you want.

Please contact your prescriber. I can tell you what my prescriber advised me when I had the same situation at 15, but I don’t want to because everyone is different and these are supposed to be prescription medications.

Your ideal dose is the one below that which you can’t tolerate, so for you that could be 5 ( the 2.5’s are half doses, but could be 7.5) why did you move up?

I moved up because that is what the programme says you do. Also not really losing weight yet and been on Wegovy then Mounjaro for 8 months now

I appreciate your point but would still be interested in what advice you were given, seeing as it's the same circumstances.

Just lower your dose on your next injection, maybe just take 5mg with it being 10 days since your last dose

I was vomit city on 12.5 so I went back down and it's fine. I can't tolerate 1mg over 10.
Looks like Im on that for the foreseeable. The best one was 7.5 really.

I had a MASSIVE ramp up in side effects moving from 7.5 to 10. Did a further 15 doses at 7.5, now up at 10. Increased as I stopped losing - now settled on 10 - vomit day after jab but otherwise ok!

I’m afraid to say that if you’re not losing weight after 8 months on either wegovy or mounjaro it’s probably unfortunately not suitable. Prescribing guidance recommends stopping under these circumstances.

I had worse side effects at 10 too op but lost suppression on 7.5 so, I've tried tweaking to find the sweet spot by counting clicks. 9mg is just right at the moment for me.

I have spent most of today in bed (although I have a bug too and a free day so I am letting myself be sick). I moved off 7.5 which I was on for 3 pens last week and click counted up to 9 only to have 2 days of upset tummy. I reduced slightly this Thursday by a couple of clicks and still awful today. Can’t keep anything in. Going by last week this seems to be 48 hour thing with super high suppression most of the week.

i am planning on cautiously click counting to find a sweet spot. I had similar when I moved up to 7.5 - it took me 6 doses to crawl up from 5 then stayed there for another 6. But then found my last 3 doses were not really quite enough.

the issue I have is that for me, having side effects is a sign of effectiveness. I was having sulphur burps for all but the last 3 doses of my 7.5. The weight loss seems to plateau when the symptoms subside.

I know everyone is different but it's really helpful to hear others' experiences, thank you.

I did not know you could take only part of the dose for instance so I've learned something useful.

How do I take less than 10mg? How many clicks does it work out as?

I thought I would have to bin the current pen and buy a new one at 7.5mg. But if I could take 8mg that would be grand. Just got to work out how to do it.

You don’t need to keep increasing the dose because that’s what the programme says. I’ve only ever moved up when had no suppression. Have no not lost any weight at all?

Some people have side effects because they have not changed their diet and trying to eat their usual fatty, salty, processed food or are not eating enough, or have made drastic changes too quickly. Eat less but not too a drastic a reduction, and introduce changes like increasing protein and fibre carefully.

This theory works regardless of pen strength and dose required….

Dose required divided by pen strength x 60 = clicks

so if you want 8 mg from 10 mg pen….

8 divided by 10 x 60 = 48 clicks

What are you eating? I only get side effects if I eat poorly. Could that be it?

I did two doses of 10mg, had similar side effects, so counted clicks and went back down to 7.5mg as it’s clearly the dose for me.

If you’ve not lost any weight though then maybe the drug just isn’t suitable for you full stop?

If you've been in a consistent calorie deficit and have only lost minimal weight after eight months on two different GLP-1 drugs then you need to see your GP for bloods to check your thyroid.

I was like this on 7.5mg. I had constant diarrhoea though. Not great when you are a teacher! I dropped down to 5mg. The pen just lasted for 7-8 doses rather than 5, so I actually saved money.

You count clicks

My side effects don’t seem to hugely correlate to what I eat except eggs and pulses (healthy stuff!). They are worse if I don’t drink enough though. Pepto bismol helps me the most with them.

but I am losing fairly consistently 3.5 stone in 7 months. And have since 2.5. Not super fast and can be a bit bumpy but steadily down. If you aren’t then I would echo what others say and re think if it’s the right thing for you.

This is really Interesting last week on 3rd dose of 10 I had severe diarrhea... I put it down to a bug and took my last jab as planned and it returned. I'm talking bowel prep type. It's really knocked me.
I've got an operation coming up so I'm off the pen for a month and have to restart but I'm guessing I can't tolerate the 10mg.
Up till this point I was fine with each dose. Headache day after jab and some constipation but managed with paracetamol and drank loads. This last week has been hell.
