Mounjaro bingo…yawn!

MounjaroBingo · 29/07/2025 13:25

I met some friends for lunch last week and the topic invariably turned to WLI.

I haven’t told them I’m on WLI, as I had a feeling I’d get this reaction…and bingo, there was the first cliche (hence why I haven’t told them).

One of the group has lost a few stone…”the hard way, through diet and exercise”. Yawn.

I did attempt to generally bat back and say that people still need to eat healthily and exercise to lose weight, but they were having none of it.

I feel like I’m going to scream if I see anymore of these types of comments:

”What about people eat less and move more, it’s not rocket science”

etc etc

Not sure what I’m looking for here other than a rant. But please feel free to add to the bingo card!

People are cheating and lazy, yawn x

HappyWineDay · 29/07/2025 14:45

If someone comes out and says ”the hard way, through diet and exercise” then my first thought is that they're on WLIs! 😂

Orangeandpurpletulips · 29/07/2025 14:48

Lean into it. Tell them you're on MJ, stuffing your face with kebabs and chocolate all day, not moving at all, taking in more than you burn off and still losing weight constantly because its magic.

Branleuse · 29/07/2025 14:50

I like to wait till theyve insulted it enough before telling them im on it.

Haha. Yesss!!
And also then ask why would I not cheat? Why would I do something I wanted to do the hard way and not the easier way?
The other day I took the lift instead of the stairs as I had shopping bags and it was easier, same outcome I got to the 5th floor.

GanninHyem · 29/07/2025 15:24

"the side effects"... The side effects from being obese are pretty shit too but they don't bat an eye about that.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 29/07/2025 15:33

Yeah, I absolutely don't consider £150 a month, sulphur burps, nausea, diarrhoea, often having to leave meals half finished and not really fancying absolutely delicious food as cheating!

I am quite happy to tell people that I am on WLI if they ask about weight loss, and that I have done the whole eat less, move more think but it doesn't work when you love food and are generally a lazy sod!

I lost 5 stone on SW before (and put it back on) and people took the piss about muller lights, unlimited pasta and so on. SW worked for me, but it didn't when I stopped and went back to eating normally. I am coming to the end of using WLIs in a couple of months and have a better plan in place for the future than just stopping and seeing how it goes, like I did with SW, so I am hoping this time will be more successful.

But in general, sod what people think. People often like to snipe on others who have been successful where they have not, or for doing something to make themselves better!

Branleuse · 29/07/2025 15:37

The side effects for me have been positive.
Theres a lot of scare stories like thsy do anytime demand for something gets high.
My weight has plateaued for weeks on mj, but i actually feel so much better on it

CoughCoughLaugh · 29/07/2025 16:10

I have no skin in the WLI game as although I'm a little bit overweight and would love to take something to even knock my appetite down a little, I'm a needle phobe so it's a big fat, "Hell, Noooooooooooo!" from me. However, I have a lovely friend who was very overweight that started taking it, she has tried pretty much every diet going previously and the weight just never stayed off. She did so well and dropped 5 stone. She was so happy, I was so happy for her, she felt and looked amazing. So she started cutting down on her dose but still eating really healthily etc. She has started to get hungry again and is terrified she is going to put it all back on again. I feel so desperately sad for her. But I have heard of stories on MN where it's working for people and I think that's wonderful. People are different. But I'm just very much aware that, as with every weight loss solution, not every one is a good fit for everyone. I also think it's a legitimate concern that the long term effects for Mounjaro etc being used for weight loss are not very well known. But on the other hand, every medication ever used for anything is not known to start with and can cause ill effects in some people.

And that's why I don't judge anyone for trying any method I'm so stuck on the fence! 😖 😂

Yep!
I have a friend who lost 5 stone over the last 2 years. She complimented me on my weight loss and I happily told her I'm on Mounjaro expecting her to say the same but no... I'm sorry but I just don't believe it! We all know how bloody hard it is to lose 5 stone let alone keep it off. I assume anyone who has lost a lot in the past couple of years is on WLI but I'd never be rude enough to ask.

Fatmumslim01 · 29/07/2025 16:20

The weight will come back on when you stop....I'm not intending on stopping! just like I don't stop thyroxine now my thyroid is stable I'm also not planning to stop mj once my weight is better

Yes, that leap always surprises me. Especially when it's tied to assumptions about finances. Is it really so out there that some people have £100ish a month disposable income?

JohnTheRevelator · 29/07/2025 17:28

If only people would shut the fuck up about weight loss jabs being 'cheating'. So what if someone uses them? At least they're doing something positive about their excess weight. Never in my life have I heard so much sanctimonious twaddle about a medication. I do get why people lie about using them as there's so much judgement, but I do get a bit fed up with people saying 'Oh I lost it NATURALLY'. Well, bully for you. Some people just need a bit of help. It's nothing to do with being lazy or greedy.

Edited

It would also be fine if it were. Obese people aren't likely to get to and remain at a healthy BMI. The odds of this must be even lower if said obese person is lazy and/or greedy. I'd say I'm a moderate amount of both, fwiw, and despite this MJ means I am obese no longer!

I think some people are under the impression that using WL injections will magically make you lose weight, while you continue eating as much food as before!

TragicMuse · 29/07/2025 18:22

The cheating thing is utterly insane. Who am I cheating? How?

I dye my hair. I wear make up. Sometimes I wear Spanx. I’ve even been known to wear scent, I don’t naturally smell of lemons.

It says so much about how they view other women.

I’m not in a competition with anyone else in relation to my body.

If someone doesn’t qualify for WLI or doesn’t want to take them, that’s absolutely fine. Let them make that choice. But they don’t get to choose for me.

The answer is, you're cheating the people who had entered you into a competition without your consent or knowledge. One where they decided the rules of play, with a view to ensuring they'd always be able to see themselves as being above you. This is what it basically boils down to.

socks1107 · 29/07/2025 18:30

@BabyCatFace why do make that assumption? I’ve lost a lot of weight through diet and exercise, in the last few years and haven’t used WLI. In the same way people shouldn’t assume everyone on it is lazy and cheating you shouldn’t assume those who’ve lost weight have all used it.
it wasn’t for me for a number of reasons so I didn’t use it

Of course there are always outliers but it's too coincidental for most people (me included!) who have been obese for years or decades to suddenly be a healthy weight just as WLI became accessible. Yeah right.

InfoSecInTheCity · 29/07/2025 18:36

I’ve only had 1 person who was a twat about it, I just said “well thanks for your opinion, I’ve heard it now so that’s that.”

Im pretty open about being on it, I’ve found most people are really interested, pleased for me and intrigued about whether it would be good for them.

The twats, well, you know what they say “Opinions are like arseholes, everyone’s got one and some of them stink.”

If you look at studies on weight loss in general - slimming world, weightwatchers, Atkins, Cambridge, keto, eat less/move more, gastric balloons/sleeves/bypass……. Any significant weight loss where the participant started as obese, the stats show that between 80-90% of people will regain most of the weight within 2 years of reaching their goal and stopping the ‘diet’. WLIs show similar stays to all weight loss.

Personally I’m planning to be on Mounjaro long term, I have no intention of stopping. I was prescribed it by the NHS due to very bad T2 diabetes that wasn’t fully controlled with insulin, Metformin and incredibly low carb diet (only the carbs in green veg and dairy, I even cut all fruit from my diet).

Since going on it in September I’ve been able to stop insulin, stop metformin, reintroduce some limited carbs and I’ve lost 5 stone going from obese to lower end of healthy BMI. If that means I take 1 injection a week for the rest of my life then I’m all for it.

purpledaze24 · 29/07/2025 19:25

Ask them what genuine reason they have for doing things the hard way when there’s an easy way?? Guaranteed your friend who lost weight “the hard way” was secretly on WLIs and ashamed of it, which is so much more embarrassing than being open about being on them. MJ doesn’t make you healthy or toned or fit. You still have to do those things on your own

I note your faux concern about long term side effects for people taking mounjaro for weight loss, how's about all the people who will never become T2 diabetic, how's that for a long term side effect, no peripheral neuropathy, renal complications, diabetic retinopathy, gangrenous toes, silent MIs etc etc.
I'll take those long term side effects, thank you very much!

Having lost weight using various methods over the years I've come to the conclusion that a significant proportion of people don't want fat people to lose weight. Whichever method I've used (SW, WW, intermittent fasting etc) has been criticised as being unhealthy, a con, a fad etc.

I see WLI as leveling the playing field. That "thing" that slim people naturally have and we don't have, we're now getting via WLI. And some slim people just don't like that. I don't understand it. If medicine suddenly came up with a treatment that really helped drug addicts get clean, or alcoholics get sober, I'd be delighted for them. Not resent them for "cheating'. It's really made me realise how much fat people are despised by some.
