Injections having no effect?!

Hi all,

Do any of you have experience with the injections not working? My dad has been on them for a couple months but he is still interested in eating quite a lot. He also eats junk like crisps, ice cream, and sugary drinks. How is this possible??

I still eat all of those things but in moderation. Has he lost weight?

CatsorDogsrule · 25/07/2025 12:03

Is he prescribed on the NHS or buying from a legitimate pharmacy?

What dose is he on? The low doses don't work for everyone.

CharmingDryad · 25/07/2025 12:06

He is buying them in the states. I’ll ask him which one he’s on. Some of them are low dose injections?

I can still easily eat 1500 calories on 12.5mg, even when I'm at peak dose, and more if I ate rubbish. I don't know how people say "Oooh I can only eat 500 calories a day on 5mg." Still, a testament to how my appetite I was before I started!

Do you still eat dessert after lunch and dinner almost every day? That’s what he’s doing.

He needs to stop eating so much junk etc
He needs to speak to his medication supplier

Yes, it doesn’t seem to be working, does it?

He needs to put in front he hard work too though

DustyTangerine · 25/07/2025 12:15

You can still eat that stuff just less of it and you’re likely to feel a bit ill after. It also depends what dose he’s on and how long he’s been on it for. I could eat all manner of stuff on 5mg but I’ve just moved up to 7.5 and I can hardly manage 2 meals a day. I expect that’ll settle down soon

Dozycuntlaters · 25/07/2025 12:36

The jab isn't a magic cure, you've still got to put the work in. I know someone who's on it, he still eats shit but just not to much shit. He did lose 2 stone on it but is gradually gaining it back, because he has not changed his attitude to food. I'm on it, doing really well, very aware of what I'm eating etc. I just don't understand the point of being on it if you are still going to keep old habits up.

What dose is he on? Maybe he needs to go up to the next dose if he is getting food noise. It's not the magic potion folk seem to think it is, it just helps with the mind set but you have to be strong too and completely change the habits.

SilenceInside · 25/07/2025 13:21

Some people need the higher doses of semaglutide or tirzepatide in order to get the full effects. It’s too early to say it isn’t working for him, it isn’t working fully for him yet but as he moves up the doses it should start to kick in. Some people need the very highest doses of semaglutide, and small percentage it will never work for.

NoweverytimeIgoforthemailbox · 25/07/2025 13:24

They don’t work for everyone.

He needs to make sure he follows the storage instructions. The injections make it easier to lose weight but they don’t do all of the work. He still needs to take responsibility for his diet.

I say this eating a kit kat and having a cuppa. Some ‘treats’ are fine. I’ve lost nearly 3 1/2 stones so far.

AllotmentHappy · 25/07/2025 13:24

Problem is its a appetite suppressant, if you still eat shit you wont loose weight you need to do the work alongside. Its not some miracle drug.

DecoratingDiva · 25/07/2025 13:46

I still eat exactly what I want just a lot less of it as I am not constantly thinking about food.

I haven’t really made any lifestyle changes yet (and I know I should) but still lost 9kg in 6 months without really trying.

Of course we should all make more of an effort to eat better & exercise more but without trying the drugs don’t magically change your behaviours, you still have to make an effort to do that.

If your father is still eating puddings but losing weight it is still a good thing.

You haven’t actually answered the question as to whether he is losing weight, you only seem to be focused on what you think he is eating.

I think what he’s eating is really important. You can’t sustain long term weight loss with a shit diet. Especially as lots of UPFs have been shown to work against food signals.

Of course your relationship with food should change, and long term a sustainable healthy diet is what is needed.

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 25/07/2025 14:13

He also need to have a certain amount of will power. In the first instance I would get him to speak to his supplier as they may need to up his dose. Personally on Mounjaro and had some suppression on 2.5mg but worse off quickly…upped to 5mg and have a lot more suppression and have stuck to this dose for 5 months and lost 4stone. BUT I am also following a calorie deficit diet, not denying myself little treats though but not having them daily.

Presterjohn71 · 25/07/2025 14:34

My partner is on one of these injections. She's still eating crap and barely losing weight. You can't buy yourself thin. She won't do the work but has bought everything diet related in existence. Sadly all these things are helpers but they won't do the work for you.

CharmingDryad · 25/07/2025 12:12

Yes, it doesn’t seem to be working, does it?

But it’s not a magic wand! He’s got to make good choices too. I can still eat a lot. I don’t get side effects and I can eat unhealthy food without problems if I want. But I’ve worked really hard planning, making and eating healthy food. And the drug helps me keep firm and in the right zone. But it sounds like your dad isn’t even trying. That’s why it’s not working. Yes it’s not having a lot of appetite suppression, but that happens to quite a lot of people.

Nevertrustacop · 25/07/2025 21:33

So we have no idea if it's working, because you refuse to tell us if he has lost weight!

lljkk · 25/07/2025 21:55

It is so expensive in the States, am surprised at anyone who doesn't use it very seriously because the cost is horrendous over there.

He’s lost five lbs, but I feel he should be losing more.

Super interesting. I thought his dose might be too low, but perhaps the injections simply don’t deter some people enough from eating.

That’s true. I feel like if one is going to buy it, one should be trying to push oneself to eat less.

Is he in America? Or is he uk ordering it from America?

How much does he weigh and his BMI

this is all important info which you haven't said. Also is it wegovy or mounjaro.

The starting dose overall is not a weight loss dose. It's to help your body adapt. ( much more complex but easier to say)

Has he done his TDEE to work our the calories he needs each day. And also the amount of protein?

These injections are good when used correctly and for the correct demographic of people. But no one can advise unless you give more info.
